As stated, black oil sunflower seeds.  They cannot resist them.  I made an 18" square frame with 2x4s and nailed 1/4" wire mesh with window screening on top of that to the frame.  Now the seeds stay above the grass and rain falls through the platform.  The 1/4" wire gives it strength to support squirrels and raccoons that may feed on the seeds.  A couple bags of wood mulch stacked behind makes a safe and quiet backstop.

Thanks, all. My fear is the little suckers burrowing under the pool. Looks like I’m making a trip to Lowes.
