I missed out on some good conversation while away for a bit, lol. Just got back home earlier today and spotted two more reds, but won't be able to go after them for a short while...
I had no idea there was any demand for squirrel tails anymore. I didn't check the link yet, but very interesting. I heard of some demand for them a few years back, but never looked into it. Honestly didn't know why (...or have forgotten
) until now.
Wayne, I always enjoy your videos/photos. The state land you hunt often looks exactly like the woods around my place. First time I watched one of your videos I had to to double check your location, thought you might have been a neighbor, lol. But seriously, you have a nice assortment of pcp's and always a good display of your quarry.
As to just touch on the subject of airguns I've used on reds and chipmunks, I've had success with everything from a 1377 up through a .25 cal. gas ram with a few pcp's in between. Nothing too fancy. My old Daisy 880 has probably taken the most, but doesn't come out often anymore. Had a Diana 34 .177 set up for 10fpe but has settled in around 9-ish fpe and works great out to 25-30 yards on reds. I would like to add a .30 or .35 to the collection as a "do it all" airgun, just not in the cards at this time.

Just came across this thread.
My brothers and I have a cabin in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We had a real problem with reds getting in during winter months when no one around. Them little buggers find a crack and just chew a hole big enough to get in a nice warm cabin for the winter. Well... we declared war and shot over 30 of them one summer with a 20gauge. Now we still have plenty of them but they have been less troublesome. So the last two years getting into airguns have found it more sporting to use them. We all enjoy it and gives em a chance. They do learn to recognize a gun. Will sit and chatter at you until you go in and grab a gun. Then they’re quiet. Guess there is something going on in that peabrain.

Red squirrels in the U.K. are very docile, they can't compete with gray squirrels for territory. The gray squirrels also carry a virus ( also called POX) that kills British red squirrels. It's sad to see the maps of red squirrel habitation in England, Wales and Scotland.

Sadly PETA believes that controlling gray squirrels will not help save the native red squirrels.
