3D printer / 3D carver recommendations?
« on: July 23, 2021, 08:34:54 AM »
I have a background in 3D CAD and modeling and am thinking about getting either a 3D printer or 3D CNC to fabricate stocks and other parts for air guns.  Where should I start?  I'm guessing a 3D printer might be more versatile to start with, are there any entry models worth considering?

I have and recomend the Ender3 if you want to print stocks then you may want to look into a larger unit.

That's a lot cheaper than I expected, boy prices have gone down since I last looked at 3D printers.

What 3D modeling software do you recommend?  Any open source 3D modeling apps worth looking at?

Open source? FreeCAD, OpenSCAD, Blender.

Personally I use OpenSCAD for things where being parametric is a primary goal.

Tinkercad isn't open source, but it is free and CSG  modeling is good enough for a lot of practical things.

Fusion360 isn't free or ope source, but it is still "free" for hobbyist use (just have to make sure that's the download you pick) and my go-to for anything more complex than I'd want to tackle with Tinkercad.

Ok, thanks.  I've used Blender before.  Didn't know it could do solid modeling.  I'll give the others a look, thanks!

Fusion360 has a lot of tutorials on Youtube. I like it cuz the interface is similar to other programs I use a lot.

The prices for the original Ender 3 are dropping. Here is a 14 hr sale for $140. https://www.newegg.com/creality-3d-ender-3-black/p/288-00B4-00038.
I don't know anything about the vendor.

I've bought electronics / computers from them in the past, nothing recently though.  I don't recall having any problems with them.

Check out the sovol sv-01.  Itís a solid budget printer with a better extruder and vertical axis control.  I believe it has a larger print volume as well though I donít remember exactlyÖ. I have printed so much stuff on this thing it has never given me any difficulty at all. Granted I had to spend time getting to know the difference filaments and what their preferred temperatures are but thatís to be expected.

When I did my research it all indicated that the sovol was superior with one shortcoming: A smaller user base to call on for tips and tricks.

My ender3 has served quite well. Upgrades are super cheap and easy. I print exclusively with CF nylon.

As for the router, I have a 3018. BIG learning curve and not near as much support or freeware that works well with cnc machining. CAM products are not nearly as intuitive as printing. I use fushion for cam.

Prusaslic3r for printing.
