Long holes through odd shaped wood, I usually clamp a bit in my drill press vice, leave only the tip sticking straight up. Center it with chuck. Start your hole on the critical end while resting the center of other end hole (buttstock end) on the bit in vice. I turn the stock slowly while drilling to offset any developing walk. With buttstock screws, I generally go all the way through with minor diameter then open it up from buttplate forward until I have screw sticking out the front the length needed. Of course you can do a ‘meet in the middle’ and if you’re off a tad, it won’t be the end of the world. Another tip, after going so far in the press, I switch to hand drill if I feel my bit fits snug enough to not wander. And another, start with short bits on the press. They wander less during that first critical couple of inches. Dave
