Title: HEY INDIANA AIRGUN SHOOTERS ...
Post by: NotRocketSurgery on September 02, 2015, 05:55:38 PM
I just noticed that the post right below this one has about 650 views.  Does this actually mean that there might be over 600 airguners from Indiana on this site?  And, we Hoosiers don't even have some kind of State Wide Airgun Organization so we can find out who we all are?  Better yet, where we all are?

Just for the fun of it, I will make an offer that can't be refused.  If you are an airgunner, and you live in Indiana, PLEASE respond to this post and send me your full name, the county you live in and your email address.  I will set up a mailing list that won't give away anybody's secrets, and we can start to see what we can do to get something going in Indiana.

This is nuts.  Where is everybody?

I'm in a Chicago suburb, but sometimes check threads from neighboring states. Also, if a someone clicks on this thread and then comes back multiple times later it adds to the views.
There is a fun shoot in southern Illinois over Memorial Day weekend, check out the IL thread if you live down that way.

Hi folks,

My wife Lilly and I live about 80 miles west of Terre Haute.  We enjoy shooting our AG's.  If you folks put together a shoot, we would really enjoy attending.

Lilly and I have developed a timed can shoot that most people enjoy.  It is a great equalizer of equipment.   Power may not be your friend, but accuracy certainly is.  Tater and Nicole won one of the last ones.

I am in Greenfield, IN, just east of Indy.  I have two acres, and shoot from 10-100 yards.  I would love to have a shoot sometime after the heat is gone.  I don't have anything exotic to shoot, but my TF87 (AR3000) will do 1" groups at 40 yards if I do everything right.  Let me know if anyone is interested in having a shoot.

Rollin.22, some how I missed your post. You are close.
Seems like not a lot of air-gunners in my area of Indiana, finding a range is hard.
I am lucky enough to have enough room for 10 meter indoors but as I live in town any distance shooting is rare.

Hi everyone. I live in Jennings county. just south of North Vernon. Always looking for someone to shoot with. I have a small farm and would be glad to have a shoot here. We can shoot from 10 to 300 yards.  I don't have a range set  up right now. But  that would not take long. It could be BYOT  "bring your  own target". Lets get these Indiana shooters together and have some fun.
A few years ago my Son In Law and I went to Corbin KY for a fun shoot. It was a lot of fun. We can all get together and just do some fun shooting. Lets  set a date and do it. How about the first weekend in April. A day of open shooting we have plenty of time to plan it and make it happen.
If you get the word out you shoot airguns. You will be surprized how many people around you shoot. I thought I was the only one in my area. Now I know of at least a dozen.
Lets do this.

I'm interested!  It's about five hours from my house, does Commiskey Indiana have hotels?  Perhaps a tailgate airgun swap?  That will also be close in location and date to the GTA annual members' fun shoot.

Commiskey is only a couple blocks long and has almost nothing. North Vernon has one motel, it is 11 mi. north, Seymour has several and is 15 mi. west, I have plenty of room for tents and campers. I don't have any hook ups. This will be a primitive shoot, but it will still be fun and better than no shoot.
A tailgate swap is a great idea. I have a few things I might want to swap.

@Mark - Isn't Bob H's shoot usually around that time too?

That date is, of course, up to Bob's good graces, but the last one was one Memorial Day weekend. You may have to set your tent up in the car. :-)
Forgot about the camping option, I have a bag that's good for it.

"Primitive" in camper talk is no satellite TV  ;D ;D ;D  But we better be nice to HoosierDaddy, he might have a generator to keep his toys running, and none of us will sleep! (We can set it next to Jerry's tent   ::) )

That sounds like fun!  Back in the day when I shot black powder, most of the shoots I went to were like this. ...of course, all shots were iron sights and offhand, who wants a "primitive challenge"?    Tomahawks?  Flint & steel?  (Primitive challenge as a fun option, not like the whole event would be like that.)
Besides, it would be horrible if a tree rat would be so unfortunate as to step into the line of fire..   8)

Yes, while my camper has a/c and a microwave for when there is 120V.... it can be an oxymoron to call it primative when youu go "off the grid" without any hook-ups. That to us is LP for the stove/ fridge/ furnace and lights/ waterpump are off 12V. Water is all contained wether it's fresh, black,  or grey.
Far from roughing it but my days of tent camping are long gone. ;)

Just giving you a hard time because all we have is a tent.   :-[

If had the money for a camper and somewhere to keep it, I buy one immediately.

We are making progress with this. We have 7 here and 6 locals within 20 miles of me that said they would like to come. We are going to have a good time. I would like some help planing. I have very few targets. What do you guys want to shoot? I have all winter to make some. Things we shoot are just about anything that will make a noise or swing when hit.  Bottle caps hung from string, metal hung anyway you can, spinners, malt balls set on golf tees, they poof when hit. Smell good to.
Help me out here and we can make this a fun weekend.

You can never go wrong with plastic soldiers, suckers (or hard candy), necco wafers or chalk pieces.  Any fruits or vegetables going bad? Execute them!  Save your soda cans!  I have two or three auto-reset targets (two of them are just good up to ~20ish fpe), a low power swinger and a high power swinger (made for centerfire pistol).  You can also make swingers out of old spoons from a yard sale, but I recommend you flatten the spoon end with a hammer to reduce unpredictable ricochet.

Post by: Geoff on November 13, 2016, 12:01:15 PM
I imagine most all of us have spinners and other targets we could bring.  this way you only need to worry about your local guys having something to shoot at.

Having the place to shoot is the most important part and you having that covered is fantastic.

Not to mention that Binford aka Steelplinkers is in Indiana, and I'm sure he would be happy to sell us a few of his top notch targets!  :-)  (And I'm not exaggerating at all when I say top notch, his targets are friggin' works of art. They will also take the pounding of my 50fpe rifle like I was shooting spitwads.)

We are just a short drive from north Vernon, about a half hour.

I have no idea how the dates will work out, but my wife and I would be interested.  Might even camp if you have trees, we sleep in any weather  ;D

I'll work something out with Jimmy about targets, even if we can't stay and shoot I'm sure I can atleast provide something fun to shoot at.

You must be close. I live 8 miles south of North Vernon just 2 miles off 3 on 750 south. You can find me on Google. I am in the middle of no where.
Ben mentioned having a field target course.  He said if we wanted to shoot a FT course he would bring the targets to shoot at. We can keep it casual and just shoot through to learn how that is done. Or what ever you guys want to do. Let me know, I will have to check with Ben and find out what I need to do to make a course. Myself I would love to see what shooting FT is all about.
For sure, the shoot is on. I have several people that are coming for sure. Everyone is welcome. Get the word out, it is going to be fun. Bring your shooting equipment, and something to eat, just in case my wife will not fix us something.

Keeping everyone thinking about the shoot. I just ordered some targets. We are going to have something nice to shoot at. I think. We also will have some out of state shooters too. A couple of guys from Tenn. are coming if they can work it out. A couple Army guys form Fort Campbell KY, also said they want to come. They are not snippers. I know for a fact we can out shoot at least one of them. I hope that will be ok with everyone. This is going to be a multi state shoot. And a lot of fun.

Cool!  I'm preparing my stories in case there is a tailgate swap meet:
"Huh? How did that get in there?"
"Oh, I've had that one for years, I just don't get it out much"
"I found it in the ditch, don't you think it cleaned up real nice?"

Name is Ryan.  Greenville, Indiana ---- 20 minutes from Louisville KY.

Hi Ryan, that only puts you a little over an hour from me. Are you going to come to the shoot here in April? It will be a lot of fun. A weekend of just shooting and getting to know some of these guys.

My name is Ed.  Merrillville Indiana

Wish I lived somewhere where I could shoot my air guns outside, especially now that I have repaired my old Daisy 880, I am located in Merrillville Indiana.

I only know of one person locally where I can go and shoot them outside in a unincorporated part of the county, but those are few and far between times. I am basically stuck to only indoors or my little setup in the garage with paper targets on 3/4" plywood. Once the hot summer comes, the garage is pretty much a few shots here and there as it gets to hot in garage. I have a full wood fence around my entire backyard and with a good setup, it would pose no problem at all to anyone. But if I do it I know I will get a visit from the police as a neighbor will call. Actually I am surprised they don't call with me doing it in garage, I think I still could run into a problem if the police show up, even though I am in a enclosed area. Somewhere along the lines it got banned due to a couple bad apples that ruin it for everyone.

The ordinance in Merrillville says: It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge any rifle or solid pellet firearm.

Hopefully I could find someone on here that has a location that does not prohibit it, even if I have to drive a some distance.

Hi Ed!
Log your self onto the GTA Members Map. https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=962067 (https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=962067)
Looks to me like there are 3 members in your area, although two of them say "Jimbo", there is "GP2004" in Griffith and if that is who I think it is, he is a very active member and I bet would be willing to meet up and shoot. Might send them a PM and find out.

Welcome fellow Hoosier!

Hey guys!
tatanka here in S.W. Indiana. Evansville to be exact.  Haven't been an active participant on the board for a couple of years, but, like to drop in every now and then.  I do try to make it to the Fun Shoot at Glenco in the spring. Haven't been able to keep up with the shooting as I would like, either.  Wife keeps me busy on weekends with whole-house remodeling  >:(.  Anyway, hope to see some of you guys at the Fun Shoot this year.

Hi Ed, I live in Porter, not that far from Merrillville. Like you I have no where local to shoot. I found an air rifle club in Kalamazoo that shoots on most Saturdays, nice people and a 100 yard range. Look up Southern Michigan Gun Club (SMGC), If you or anyone else is interested in making the trip maybe we can make the run together.

Hi Joe, thank you for the reply.  I will take a look at that SMGC website, seems a little farther then what I would like to drive to, but I will keep the option open for now. Really stinks that this area is like this now, cannot even use them it in my own backyard. I am pretty sure if I did someone would call the police so I am not going to even attempt it.

More info for the Indiana airgun shoot:

If you are not inclined to camping, if the weather is uncooperative or you're trying to coax your spouse into coming, I have found a couple decent hotels in nearby Scottsburg IN, about 21 miles drive from the event site.  (My travel reward points will serve me well! :-) )
And if you're the touristy kind, you are just a few miles away from  Stream Clff farm. They apparently have a winery, restaurants, gift shops, gardens... you know touristy stuff.  :D  And on April 8-9, they are having "Spring Antique Shop Open House with free refreshments".   Note: Neither I nor the event holder or sponsors will be responsible for the additional costs of your SWMBO travelling to an antique shop while you are distracted shooting your airguns.   :D :D  http://www.streamclifffarm.com/ (http://www.streamclifffarm.com/)

Just a reminder, We only have a month till our Indiana airgun shoot. I have failed badly at getting sponsers for the shoot. I got a compressor that will fill our rifles, it is not big enough to fill large tanks. Steelplinkers had said he will furnish some targets for a field target range for us to get a feel for what that is like. None of the other companies I contacted has even responded. So I guess we are not going to have any door prizes. I will contact most of them again this week and see if I can get an answer.
Get your guns oiled, you pellets packed, make a list of all the things you are going to bring, and let's get together and shoot something.
Don't forget if you have anything we could use to shoot at, bring it.

Sponsors shmonsors!  Let's shoot at stuff!

The only outstanding thing we should probably talk about is food and restroom facilities.
Food - I assume I need to pack my picnic cooler, are there any other arrangements that folks should know about?
Restroom facilities - okay, I'm not as young as I used to be.  Please tell me there is at least a big oak tree to hide behind?????

The place we are shooting at is my barn. It was my house till just a couple months ago. It is now my man cave. There is a bathroom, kitchen, everything we need. It is just one room with a bathroom. There are trees everywhere if you want to use one. ;).  We will be shooting in the yard. It is an 8 acre field shaped like an L. My wife and daughter said they will fix us hotdogs, and hamburgers. Maybe a pot of beans and cornbread. We are not going to starve. The barn is going to be open.
I will be staying all weekend there. It will be a safe place to keep your airguns and other stuff.
I do not have a covered shooting lane. If you have a popup sun shade bring it.
Things I would bring. Lawn chair, snacks, drinks, shooting stuff.
I will fill the fridge with pop, water. We will have hotdogs, hamburgers, Beans and cornbread. I will get chips, and other stuff to eat with our burgers. I will make a big ole pot of veggie soup for supper. I have no idea how many people will come. But we can make this work, and be fun.
Just up the road a couple miles is Stream Cliff Farms, A resturant with some good food. The Commiskey Corner store makes lunch and sandwiches, on down the road in Old Paris, is a resturant/ deli. North Vernon is 12 miles north, lots of fast food.  Seymour 15 mi. west has even more places to eat. Madison 20 mi east has some nice eateries.
If anyone has anything to add, or think we need, let me know.
If this one is successful I will build us a covered shooting lane and we can make it an annual event.
See you all in a few weeks.
Jimmy

If you buy food and drinks to feed the masses, you should at least put out a tip jar to defray the costs.  Most of us are just happy to have a place to shoot and like-minded airgunners to yack at.

Hay Guys, I was on one of  the other forums and a member made a post about a possable shooting game. His idea was to take paper targets and set them up in the woods, at unmarked ranges, and score targets using kill zones. Head, heart, lung. The kill zones will be marked with very light lines you can not see unless real close. So you shoot where you think the kill zone is and score after the shot. You shoot from a box, any way you want. Some targets will have some of the kill zone covered. If you don't shoot no negetive score, if you shoot and miss the target you get a negetive score. Multiple targets per station, When you shoot you go down and get score your target and set a new one for the next shooter.
What do you think? Want to try it at our shoot. I would need help with getting the targets drawn up. I am no artist. Can not draw flies on a hot afternoon in the river bottoms kind of bad.

For drawing the target silhouettes (this is going to sound corny, but I bet it works):  If you have a kid's plastic or stuffed toy, you could use a lamp to throw a shadow on a wall or easel.  That would allow you to trace the silhouette onto heavy construction paper or cardboard. (Eat much pizza?  :-) )   You don't need skill, only lights and toys! :-)    It doesn't have to be perfect, since you will just be using the line to guide your cutout.    As for mounting it, you would probably need a steel rod with a target clip on top (and maybe bottom if it's windy), or else a whole buncha something like paint stirring sticks to put on each target. That would only work if it's a small number of people.  The kill zones don't have to be perfect, you could use the first cutout you make, and cut out holes in it for the kill zones you want, then use it as a stencil to draw kill zones on all the subsequent targets.
If I can find a good sized box at home I will test my theory. If it works, I might even put it on youtube. I'm going to be a STAR!

Tune in next week when we learn to apply glitter.   :o

This site has some that might work:  http://www.airgunhome.com/images/targets/ (http://www.airgunhome.com/images/targets/)

Here's an example, others might need a bit of Photoshop to make the lines less visible.

manage to hack my way through Photoshop CS and could make targets, or alter ones you selected.

the problem with unmarked distances is, it is total luck to hit the target (depending on size) and total luck to hit the right spot .. might be better to mark the spot, but make it dime sized or smaller at up to 25 yards

That is true, but that was the idea. To make it like a hunt. When hunting you have to guess the distance, pick the right spot, and hope for the best. I know I pass a lot of bad shoots to wait on the good one. And sometimes I have to find the best position to shoot. Moving 6 inches up or down, left or right may give you the clear shot you need. But you have to look for it.
I you use real sized and placed kill zones you would see a lot bigger and more kill zones. Use a Squirrel as an example. Looking at one broadside the heart, lung area would start at the shoulder joint and run about 35% the length of the body. A lot  bigger then a small round target. And you would have the head shot. But the kill zone on the head is a small oval located behind the eye and filling the top half of the skull.
Using this example by setting the target where the chest shot is not real open but the head is an easyer shot. One would have to make the decession to shoot the head shot and maybe get a mess or look real close and find the open shot at the larger easyer to hit chest shot. And in either case you would have to judge the yardage.
I'm not against doing it either way. Just showing how the guy that made this up was going to do it. No matter, I think we can set it up to make it fun and all of us will be able to hit some and miss some.
If someone would make up the targets I will see what I can come up with to make the shooting stations. I will need to know the max yards we would want to shoot also. Lets say we put 4 targets at a lane. 5 lanes and we would have 20 shots shooting one shot/target. Or 2 targets per lane and shoot 2 shoots per target. Using 2 shoots per target would mean you would have to take a chance and shoot the hardest shot and take a miss, or pass and just miss a score. A no shoot is a 0 and a miss is a -1. Most could shoot through on one fill. I think this could be fun. And could become the next big shooting sport. Oh I forgot we are shooting airguns. I was dreaming. :D

Hi all, Check out a video on you tube of Dave Welham and Terry Dow talking about how it was in the very beginning of field target in the UK. I shot one of the early competitions and too make it more like hunting the "kill areas" were on the back of the target for scoring hit or miss so the placement of the shot was not influenced by a blaze orange disc. Me and the wife are going to try to get to the shoot and look forward to meeting some new air gun friends

The other nice things about a paper target:

1. You aren't restricted to the rifle power like you are with a knockdown.  A 30-40fpe rifle still just makes a little hole, not permanent target damage.
2. You can see exactly where the shot went, which is great for learning how to range properly.  (Unless the the target "jumps string" like some of my 3D archery targets do.   ;D )

I occasionally find an area where I can plink outdoors without getting in trouble with police because I have a working relationship with them. I can't say outright on this post, but if I can secure a place anytime soon I'd love to have fellow plinkers out with me for some fun.

You and any other local members are welcome to come on over.
Maybe I can set up a Saturday all day shoot for us GODS COUNTRY folks like the "Spring Fling" that was in Southern Indiana this year.
Not to replace it... but in addition to.
Thinking maybe in the early fall before the snow season hits?

Hey Gang ...

I have been posting this everywhere I can think of where it will be seen by airgunners in Indiana.  I think it will be of most interest to people in south-central Indiana, but the rest of you still need to know about it.  On June 6, I am meeting with the management of a very nice shooting facility that is located about 20 miles from Bloomington.  We are going to talk about how we can incorporate the serious airgunner into the programs that are currently available to serious firearm shooters.  I am excited about the possibilities that could develop from this.  So, if you are a serious airgun shooter, either a novice or experienced, and you would like to take part in some activities that would bring you together with other airgunners, now is the time to speak up.  Please contact me.  Either PM me or send an email to "notrocketsurgery@washbush.com" and I'll make sure that you get all the info as it comes up. I promise I will keep you posted ...  John

Hey you guys ...

For some reason only the Universe understands, I seem to have fallen into a BBH (Big Black Hole) and missed an awful lot of stuff over the last six months or so.  I need to be updated.  Is there someone who would care to summarize the activity of the last few months and get me, and maybe some others, up to speed?

In return for that, I will just mention that next Tuesday, June 6, I will be meeting with the management of a very, very nice shooting facility that is located about 20 miles west of Bloomington.  We are going to talk about how we can incorporate airgun activities into the already excellent range of activities that are available to firearm shooters.  So, at the beginning, I am thinking that we are talking about individual range time, and maybe some basic or simple type of group activity like maybe an accuracy target shoot or some such thing.  I will be able to report more details a week from now.  In my mind I see the beginning of some kind of umbrella activity that would finally make some kind of coordinated effort to involve airgunners from all over Indiana if we can offer a place for group meetings, socializing, target shooting, field target, and who knows what else.  It does look like "many" (if not most) of us are south of Indianapolis and, from what I have seen, there are more than enough of us to pull this off ... as long as everyone understands that they are going to have to wear two hats ... volunteer as well as shooter.  Shooting is a wonderful idea, and lots of people will want to benefit from the opportunity.  But, it also takes a lot of work from everyone.  That is the price we pay when a good idea is being created from scratch.  So, if you read this, and the rest of this great thread, and you are interested in the concept, please PM me or send an email to "notrocketsurgery@washbush.com" and I will make sure that everyone who contacts me is kept informed.  Sound like a good idea?   John
