Title: airgun hunting club
Post by: rudd013 on March 26, 2015, 08:40:07 AM
Would anyone in al be interested in starting up a airgun\airgun hunting club. Have no idea how to go about it but I'm sure we would figure it out. Maybe some get together and shoots. I'd like to see more airgunners in our state.

Sounds like a good idea. There are four or five of us in the Huntsville area, but not all of us have even met.

I have been getting my tank filled at a paintball shop in Bessemer and the owner seemed interested in airguns, he asked me if people would be interested on a range for them, it's fort red rock off 150

I knew of two or three of us in the area ... but haven't met anyone.  One is a "PCP guy"

Maybe we need to start up our own thread topic and go from there - Go Huntsville  ;D

Hey Steve; we should get together and shoot sometime. I think it would be good to invite some other locals and maybe even make it a monthly or quarterly thing.
So far the only local member I've met in person is Pigbuttons, Duane. He lives just a few miles from me and we have gotten together for a shooting (lead and bull ;D) session a few times.

Tracy,

Sounds interesting, been meaning to get with Duane too after exchanging a couple PM's but was just hoping to get one of my guns to shoot strait first ... the Daisy 880 is close, Hatsan 125 in a few dozen pieces is the one I'm hoping to bring to the table for the first meet.  One of these days I was going to add my AG list to the sig line, but it's too pitiful to list them all as works in progress...

PM me and let me know where your at?

Steve

PM sent.
I would go ahead and list those projects in a sig line, if I were you. This is a great forum, and I doubt anyone is gonna care if your guns aren't show pieces. Most of mine aren't either, and usually only a small percentage of them are in perfect shooting condition at any given time.

When I started with all of them it would have given me better accuracy if I threw the gun at the target, but I like a challenge and plan on getting all of them shooting better.  The Daisy was a 2"+ shooter at 25 yards until I found the bolt probe wasn't sticking out far enough, the D34 will shoot OK but the screws back out every one to three shots (LONG story), The Hatsan 125 has a chunk of the seal missing, and the Remington Express may just need the pivot tightened but I might as well just add it to the list for a full tune up.

For now I either use the Daisy (~.6" at 15 yards), or the D34 shoot, tighten screws, repeat.  Not worth putting all that baggage in the sig line  ;)

How do those pumpers shoot?  I almost bought a new Benjamin 397 from Bargain Hunter for $80, wish I had, it would have been the #2 instead of the D34.

I haven't benchrested them, but I can usually hit the bottom of a Coke can at 25 yards, standing supported with both of the 392s.

Get some 243 blue Loctite and clean the screws and threaded holes with brake clean and dry good then apply a drop of Loctite to the stock screws threads as well as the barrel pivot screw and tighten securely and let sit overnight and your loosening screw issue will be gone. its what I do on all my springer's and never have screws coming loose. That D34 should be a tack driver. If when you cock a break barrel spring gun and go to close the barrel it should stay in the position you leave it in when closing so if it falls back to the fully cocked position your pivot screw is loose and will destroy your ability to be accurate with it so if it will not stay in any position you place it after cocking it you need to do the same thing to the pivot screw that I said to do on the stock screws and tighten it just enough so that the barrel will stay put in a 90 degree position after cocking with the gun standing straight up on its butt stock. Let sit overnight for the loctite to cure and you should have a good to go gun. You can use Q tips to clean and dry out the screw thread holes in the action and barrel pivot of the fork.

Mike

It is, but when I sent it to Umarex for repair one of the things they were supposed to fix was a loose fork screw - they left it loose and it is my understanding LocTite won't hold that one (the factory had originally staked it)  :(

The Remington is probably 3rd on the list, if the Hatsan goes well I'd have something to shoot, so the daisy is next (because I think it has the highest potential for accuracy - it's already decent).

How about you Mike, ever get towards Huntsville?  ;)

Recently I have not been able to travel far due to some health issues but getting back on my feet so by spring I should be able to get up that way possibly and if you are interested in FT shooting we have a club here in Heflin AL that we shoot the first of each month so will be shooting tomorrow as a matter of fact and we welcome all fellow airgunners to come shoot and enjoy the sport.

There is no fee for the first shoot and only 10 bucks per match after that with no member dues, we are having a Heflin Open the 9th and 10th of April which is a two day 100 shot match with 50 shots per day with lunch being served on Sunday after the match.  Entry fee is not set yet but should be either 55 or 65 bucks and there will be trophies I believe for they top three spots in each class ( details not all completed as of yet ) Hunter PCP, Hunter Piston, Open PCP, Open Piston, WFTF.  If you are interested check out  http://learn2flyfish.wix.com/competitive-airgun. (http://learn2flyfish.wix.com/competitive-airgun.)

Also this link  http://www.network54.com/Forum/451309/message/1452882818/Match+Report+1-9-16+Heflin%2C+AL (http://www.network54.com/Forum/451309/message/1452882818/Match+Report+1-9-16+Heflin%2C+AL)

If you want to be informed of the matches and more on the open send me your email in a message to my email listed here and I will add you to our mailing list.

If blue Loctite will not hold it then go to 272 red Loctite or if you want to really be sure it will not come loose use 640 green bearing and stud retainer and I guaranty it will stay put, but if cleaned properly 242 blue will work I am certain.  Been a mechanic 45 years and if cleaned and used right it does work on far higher loaded fasteners than a barrel pivot.

Never been to a match, but got nothing that can compete yet.

Done some shadetree ... was thinking straight superglue, but maybe the gel that takes a minute or two to dry.  If that don't hold maybe epoxy or a weld.

Sorry to hear of health issues Mike, glad your on your way back.  Appreciate the invite

I did not have anything but a crosman quest the first match I competed in and scored a 7/44 so its not important that you have something to compete but just come and have fun and enjoy shooting with like minded airgunners. Believe me I am using a marauder as do some others also and  with use several thousand dollar guns and scopes but that's not the point.

Our actual match is next Saturday as it got pushed back a week but most of us met today and shot for fun and I used my FWB 300s that is a 8 fpe gun shooting 10.34 JSBs at 575 fps so I am lobbing pellets out to 55 yards but managed to drop 24 targets today with it so its just plain fun.

I still feel that Loctite will be far better than super glue, epoxy or JB weld would work also but I am still trying to keep it where you can disassemble it if needed in the future with out breaking screws or the pivot bolt.

It not worthy getting old is all I can say and I never thought I would live this long with my lifestyle of living on the edge or I would have taken better care of myself. Just kidding as I would not have changed a thing since I had way to much fun and still am having fun. my problem is my 18 year old mind and my 60 year old body don't agree most days and when my body does agree it only last a few day before it rebels again. LOL.

If you get a chance come shoot with us and when I can get up your way I will PM you

I am working on some thing like that too for my area , first i have to spread the air rifle addiction ;)
I'm thinking there are alot of youth in the area too that could use some guidance and supervision.

Yup, same boat...

The fork bracket should never need to come off on the d34's, makes welding first preference (if I had the equipment)

My only decent break barrel probably couldn't consistently hit a basketball at 50 yards but as slow as I am to work on them, I don't plan to quit until they can at least hit dimes at 15 yards.

I agree with you James as if we could get our youth interested in the sport/hobby I believe they would not have time to be in trouble and mischief being reported every day on the news.

It is indeed an addiction that I had as a youngster and grew out of only to discover the addiction again in my retirement.

Have you at least tried the Loctite after a through cleaning and degreasing of the bolt and fork threads with brake clean. I have several break barrel from cheap crosmans to a FWB 124 and have yet to have a pivot screw loosen after securing with blue Loctite so you have nothing to loose and everything to gain by trying.  That D34 would be a good starting FT gun IMO.

It's the fork, the bracket that stock screws attach to.  Only posts I've read, precious few, say gun is toast.  I've made working on it my last priority.

The Daisy 880 seemed to be doing particularly well plinking earlier today though.  Hitting bottle caps from the side out to 35 yards.

Back to the Superbowl...

Ok I have no real experience with a D34 so cannot say from experience and have not read much on them so it may indeed be "toast" as you put it but for the dollars they want for them of 250 and up I would think it is fixable but understand that its quicker to fix the easy ones first as well.

Just trying to help with solutions and if you would like to get it right I would be willing to look at it if you were inclined to ship it to me and see if I could get it fixed for you so its your call with that since I fix and build my own guns from pretty much scratch at times or from piles of various guns parts.

Yea back to the blooper bowl for now though as well.
