Title: Entry Level Field Target Rifle
Post by: Kallysan on July 05, 2014, 09:50:45 PM
Any suggestions for an entry level FT rifle?   Looks like a lot of fin but my Hatsan breaks the 20fpe limit.

.177 is common the .22 is used also but harder on smaller kill zones. Are you looking for springer or a pcp ? it does not have to be the "latest and greatest" when I went to my first field target event I was given great advice " Enjoy your gun not your score card " I did and had a wonderful time and planning on doing more.

For Field target ... Honestly stick with .177 cal !!

A .22 ( lightest 14.3 grain ) maxes velocity at 817 fps
A .177 ( using a heavy 10.3 grain ) maxes out closer to 935 fps

No brainer which gets there faster and flatter  ;D

Tho ... that said, wanting a PCP or Springer does change suggestions quite a bit  :P

IMO you have 2 choices at the entry level worthy of the expenditure.
Not on the cheap .. but paid good money and got a darn fine rifle !!

Air Arms TX 200 MKIII
HW 97K

Don't buy one now ... you stay shooting a spring gun you WILL eventually  ;)

A b40 in .177 is a good start point... ::)

If you can find a B40.  A bone stock TX or HW97K will get you in the game.  Then if you decide to stay you can get the rifle tuned and add a custom stock and have equipment that can compete with the best out there.

As long as you are not shooting with me.
My bad shooting last week brought the whole squad's numbers down.
Sorry... :-\

Oh how I wish there were FT Matches within reasonable driving distance from central NH. I have not found one that is less than a 3 hour drive each way!

I have the equipment but no place to go!

I almost went to Crosman's Match and would have made a three day weekend out of it. Being a Crosman Authorized Repair Center I'm sure I could have gotten a complete detail tour of the complex and meet some of the Crosman employees I talk to on the phone. Other prior commitments prevented that from taking place.

I am going to try my Browning leverage in .177. It's a lot heavy. But a fun start.

don't know if it helps norm but here is a link for the northeast field target events http://www.bcsportsmen.org/ft/schedule.html (http://www.bcsportsmen.org/ft/schedule.html)  has some other clubs listed in it also.

I am thinking of going to the one in Damascus MD. I need to do more research on joining the club. But I am more just practicing and buying equipment geared toward that. I can hit a bar door but that's about it when I get off the bench.

Wondering how much you are looking to spend on your springer.  You said you want an entry level rifle.   Some of the popular fixed barrel rifles TX and HW rifles are over $600.00 to start.  Of course, there are some good looking wood stocks, that figure into the price. Just asking if you would consider synthetic stocks, with accuracy.   Also how "into it" you wanna get as a starter in FT.  Stocks can be changed down the road...
Absolutely No shame in a budget bud ;)

FT or HFT is a game of Precision shooting ... If gun DOES NOT hit where pointed it becomes a mute point to improve ones shooting competence if a hit or miss is unknown as too being shooter or gun ???

Get a GOOD GUN and 1/2 your worries just got resolved ... Your missing it's YOU  ;D

X2!!!  Get a GOOD GUN.  There are good fixed barrel rifles that won't cost you and a lot to be competitive with.

My TX200MK3 & HW97K are both .22, That is ok I have a R11 & Feinwerkbau Sport on the way. :) Now I need some decent bi-pod sticks and another 3-12X44 scope.

Beeman R9 is the best you can do for under $500. For a bit more an Air arms to 200 is even better. If you can't do PCP's,  those are your best choices. If you absolutely can't spend that much,  the only other gun I would consider is an rws 34.

Does the R9 have a clone of the rekord trigger? I have an R11 and am considering an R9.

The CHINESE sloppy copy will have a CLONED trigger ... ONLY the German manufactured HW will have the actual REKORD trigger unit.

This is true. I had a tuned b-26. It was nowhere near the quality of the R9 and the trigger, while not bad was no Rekord.

The best I know is a R9 and a R11 are the same airgun except for the stock and the barrel sleeve on the R11.  David

My R11 rocks, that is why I want an R9, just trying to determine if I want it in .22 or .177 because I have 1 FT gun and another one coming in Wednesday.

Hey Kallysan,

Couple of questions to put things into perspective;

Are you seriously interested in shooting Field Target, or are you just looking to try it on a temporary basis?

IF shooting on a temp basis, any gun will work (.177, .20, or .22) so long as it is 20 fpe or less.  Give it a try or ask to borrow a gun or share a gun in order to get your feet wet.

IF you already have shot a match, enjoy it, and want to continue with using a springer, I would suggest getting the best you can afford; a TX200, an HW97 or even an R9, all in .177.  All three are good guns, accurate, and have great triggers that are adjustable.  Get a springer rated scope and you have a set up that will satisfy your needs and give you years of enjoyment.

IF you then get seriously serious, you can always go over to the dark side with any number of different quality PCP guns.

The biggest factor to remember is that this game is supposed to be fun, first and foremost.  Enjoy the journey.

Hope this helps.
Mark

I know you said you wanted a springer. But, should you decide otherwise, a Marauder would work well and it's pretty cheap for a PCP starter. Of course, you would have to have a  4,500 psi bottle and a way to fill it. Just something to think about.

If you have an unregulated Marauder, a 3000psi scuba tank can be good enough. I even shot a regulated Marauder for several years using nothing but a 3300psi scuba tank. I just had to fill it more often.

I prefer a simple .177 break barrel HW95 springer, however it does seem that at the FT matches I attend the "springer shooters" are getting fewer and fewer with springer shooters moving up to PCPs. LOL....over the last couple years I've taken 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at the same match more than a couple times (I was the only piston shooter in the hunter class).  ::)
