Title: Best pellet weight for .25
Post by: caleb90 on November 09, 2021, 06:38:32 AM
So my mod 125 springer is on the way. I ordered 2 tins of the hatsan brand 24gr pellets and 1 of crow mags. Then i got to thinking what would be considered the best gr weight for a springer and what is too light and will cause damage. ?

My 125 .25 favorite pellet is the AIR ARMS DIABOLO FIELD .25 CAL, 25.4 GR   https://www.airgun-us.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=3625 (https://www.airgun-us.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=3625) Seems to be the best power output and speed for theses guns, 2nd is .25 Poly-Mags.
P.S the link I gave may be a questionable website from reports I have heard in the past ???

Unlike with .177 &  22 cals, there are no .25 cal lead pellets available that were really light. The lightest on the market until recently was the FTT 19.91 gr., and the same pellet under the Hatsan name. Now, even the FTT's are 20.06 gr. minimum. With .25 cals, the problem is more like lack of lower weight options.

At 16.54 gr., lead-free Exacts are the lightest .25 cals around, AFAIK. Shooting those from my H135 felt almost like dry-firing: slammy shot cycle, heavy recoil and terrible noise. 20-grain FTT's were better, but not much. With 25 - 30 grain pellets the gun worked as it should.

Around 24 - 25 grains seems to be the best pellet weight for .25 cal springers as far as mainspring longevity is concerned. However, it may be that your 125 shoots some pellet not in that range most accurately, and, unless that most accurate pellet has lousy BC, meaning unethical terminal performance for long range hunting shots, it's best to use that.

I used the 24.7gr Hatsan Pellet to break my Mod 125 in.  Accuracy improved as the gun broke in but the Hatsans never grouped better than about 1” at thirty yards. Accuracy was better with the 20.06gr FTT’s but  currently the best accuracy is with 25.39gr JSB Kings and 27.47gr H&N Baracuda Hunters.
The AA 25.4gr Diabolo Field pellets shot very well in my Striker but I’m out of them right now and haven’t had a chance to test them in the Mod 125.

I've got 3 25 cal pellet molds, my Hatsan 125 does shoot 25 cal wad cutters good to 20 yards, the 26 grain meplats shoot good to about 35 yards.  I've also got the magnum hunter mold in .25 and my AEA semi auto shoots those extremely well out to 50 yards, they weigh 34.5grains and are longer than what the 26 grain are which are about the same length as the 25 grain JSB's.

Based off my own .25's:
-JSB 25.39gr
-FX 25.4gr
-The Air Arms already mentioned
-H&N Crow Magnums you bought
-H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme
