Title: TAIPAN Veteran gets a FULL "Hunter" FIELD TARGET set up on it.
Post by: Motorhead on June 30, 2021, 02:25:00 PM
Whoa .. ya don't see this on the FT courses very often ???   How about a SHORT Bull Pup set up to shoulder and handle similar to a long gun, yet offer far more hold configurations than a long gun.
Shot on shoulder ... Shot across knees ... Shot Deadman too !!    It is comfortable doing all these positions.  The added front rail and LONG handle/saddle aids in elevated or down angle shooting along with offhand aid as well.
If your on level ground the Long handle can be removed and then you place the V yoke of your tripod into the specialty made V mount on end of air tube.

As set we're shooting JSB Monster 13.4's @ 805 fps. At 50 yards in no wind nearly hole in hole if steady enough.  It was used this last weekend at a club match proving it can indeed play the game at a high level.

Really interesting looking rifle, I would have paid more attention to it at the match if I wasn't obsessed with my own problems with my rifle on that day.  I've always be curious how those bull pup configured guns handled the standing shots.  I suppose your standing shoot-off win answers that question.  Nice work.

Fred,
You are welcome to handle and shoot it any time you like.  Wish to give it a go at a club match and really get a feel for what it is like ?  You could do that too.

After a bit of thinking about HAND SAFETY when using the Long handle and NOT having an accident while resting my hand over it decided that a TAD LONGER muzzle exit was a good idea.
Utilizing an aftermarket LDC mount / end cap on shroud, fabricated a shorty LDC Can that just bumped the length of muzzle to be much safer.  It made the gun also quieter yet ... silly quiet.

Saw that gun at the OR match, and like Fred, never thought to bug Scott to shoot it.

Way cooler in person. Wondering how many 'pups are gonna be showing up in matches soon...? :)

I loaned it to Vincent P when his scope / rifle failed him on friday.   He offered to buy it after spending an hour or so practicing with it Lol.  Had to decline the offer however.
After Fridays shooting we spoke more in depth about was it was and who sold them,  Saturday morning Vince tells me he spoke with Tony and ORDERED ONE from Talon Tunes in .177 !!!
Needless to say he liked it ... A LOT !!!

Shot my similarly configured Vet .20 Short at a local match a few months ago.

Scored a 50/60 to tie for 1st in Open.  Only three of us in Open at that match, tied shooter was using a Daystate Wolverine and second was shooting a Delta Wolf, so a little Veteran pup can compete with the best of the best.

Was happy with how it performed, considering it was the first match in this configuration (new scope, wheel, Anschutz rail for hamster). Some familiarity with it should make the scores improve.

I enjoyed it and plan to compete with it at future matches.

Gotta agree with Scott, that there is definite merit to the idea of using a pup for field target.

UPDATE .. tho no pictures yet.
Got a wild hair up my arse today while thinking how much i dislike .177 when weighted against .20 for the FT ( Field Target game )  :P

Having an LW 16mm .20 conventional rifled / choked barrel off the JSAR not being used ... thought, Huh that could allow for making a killer caliber conversion on this TAIPAN FT Custom  :o

So ... machined the barrel O.D. behind the forward Scope tower / clamp to @ .590" diameter ( 15mm ), did the threading to fit breech, made a custom one piece thimble / transfer spacer having NO o-ring within barrel O.D  with probe yet fabricated that would carry the breech o-ring.  Fabricated the required .20 cal Probe assembly, new collar etc ...  That done with a new complete probe assembly machined it to carry the breach sealing o-ring. ( using s single shot tray BTW ) so no mag snagging issue to be dealt with.
Spending over 4 hours in the shop finished it up after dinner tonight.
Due to the barrel being 16mm ahead of forward scope clamp the OEM Shroud assembly would not fit on.  ( Wanting to keep the OEM parts unmodified so it could go back to .177 )  Screwed on one of my LDC's being barrel was previously threaded 1/2-20.  Still crazy quiet with only an LDC can hanging off the muzzle.

SO NOW WE HAVE A .20 caliber TAIPAN Veteran  bull pup.  talked about it for years , now a reality !!!!

Nice work guys!👍🏼
Years ago I wondered if the AGT Vulcan would make a decent FT rig given all the rave reviews on accuracy. But I thought maybe it might be too top heavy and tilt happy once a large magnification scope was added. But it seems to be working for you guys. And they look great.

Franklink - I like your hamster setup.

Scott - looking forward to some photos of the new setup.

Very nice Scott.

I shot my .20 Vet again in August and shot a 45/48 for first place in Open and second highest overall score.

Really sweet little guns, even more so in .20.

It looks NO DIFFERENT other than barrels now Silver in lieu of black.  Today bored the OEM rear shroud mount to 16MM, so factory shroud set up and the SS extension is back on it.

Yesterday …. Took 1 of my .177 magazines  and using a #3 (.213") drill opened up the holes to be .20 caliber.  Polished the bores with a cratex point and placed a small bevel on loading side of each hole.

The .213" was required so the pellet skirts would be just contacting the hole O.D.  Any smaller and pellet needed to be PUSHED IN slightly collapsing the skirt .. not good !

Factory .177 mags use 2 small 1mm cross section o-ring to retain pellets. With the holes now .20 cal the groove these o-rings sit in became more exposed to the pellet bore and interference was a tad too much, so … went to a single o-ring of 2.5mm and this worked very well with mag functioning perfectly and probe not dragging too much as it passed by loading a pellet.

This now makes a FULLY FUNCTIONING Taipan Veteran .20 cal … Single shot tray and a mag too.

Still living out there on the cutting edge of Field Target equipment.  Just whipped it-up out of boredom, eh.  Heaven helps us all if  you ever decided to go into production.  We'll all have to replace our current equipment.
