I have the Umarex airjavalin. I don't have a lot of space to use it.
Anyone have good ideas on a safe back stop for basement use?

Try a Crossbow target, they work great for my arrow guns. Mine is a blacktop crossbow target from BPS.

RUBBER MULCH!!!!! Lowe's or Home
depot stocks rubber mulch. Put the mulch in a bag or box. Does not take too much to stop real powerful stuff. Try it. It's a no brainer!! And it's cheap!!

I have looked at the standard arrow targets, but they seem pricey
When I was a kid, we would use bales of straw.
We would also hang a super heavy blanket over the old swing set and let it just hang. It would stop arrows dead in their tracks, but it had to hang loose!!!

I have the Saber and use the Bone Collector bag to catch my arrows. It allows the arrows to be pulled out of it easily. You can get replacement covers for it on Ebay. With it only weighing about 24lbs, it's easy to carry around.

I could not find a backstop that would stop my arrows so I came up with something different.
couple sections of foam surfboards then a bag of denim and everything backed by a section of Plywood all tied up tight with ropes.
Also I use blunts rather then field tips.

On the cheap and the fly, I did make a stop out of cardboard boxes broken down and stacked together to be 2 feet thick, stopped them great, and I had them tied together so I could untie and more easily remove the bolts. This was with a 400 FPS crossbow.

A bale of hay. You can also cover a hay bale with a couple garbage bags & some duct tape to keep the mess down.

I have used straw bails in the past, but it was outdoors. Your idea of covering the bail would keep the mess down indoors.

I found that Hay bales that would stop my 90 # bows would not even slow down the Airbolts out of my PCPs :) :)

Sounds goofy, but the shrink-wrap they wrap palleted boxes in will stop high power bolts.. You need a lot.. Empty box, a mountain of shrink wrap, and pack in in tight as you can..

I use old heavy blankets for my higher powered pellet guns. Up to 1350 FPS in .177 cal.
They have never made it through the first back stop. I try to always have a second back stop for the unknown.
I have used electricians putty inside of a steel trap for pellets also. It makes it very quite.
