Title: Boring Stock Fixing Bolt Hole
Post by: Ronno6 on February 20, 2021, 08:16:25 PM
I want to make a stock or 2 for Daisy 880 platform guns.
Typically the stock is attached to the receiver by a bolt which runs thru the length of the stock from in front of
the butt plate and exiting out the tang, where it screws into a metal plate in the receiver.
Crosman 2100,2200,766 stocks would be done in a similar manner.
That's quite a healthy distance to bore a hole and keep it from drifting to one side or the other.

How will this best be accomplished??
What type of bit?

I have contemplated routing a half diameter deep channel in the face of 2 pieces of wood and gluing together,
but would rather make the stock out of a single piece.

Thanks!

There are long bits sold as bell hanger bits.  They come in a variety of lengths and diameters.  They are generally used only in wood.  You could also get a long thin auger type bit.  A clamp and a drill press would be the best way to at least start your hole so you know it's heading the right way.

I have a super long 3/8" bit that would make it but unsure how far it will wander.
I didn't know if a forstner bit or a brace and bit style auger would do better.

Maybe the blank should be left thick and shaped around the C/L of the hole.

3/8" sounds a bit large in diameter but I don't know the size of the screw in question.  If I was doing the job in question I would start with a smaller bit, say 1/8" regular bit to ensure proper placement of the hole.  I would then go full depth with that bit.  As a next step I would enlarge the hole with the larger standard length bit.  That would create the hole where you want it and start it heading the right direction with the stability of the regular length bit.  Hopefully that would create a stable passage for the longer bit.  I think I can run an electric drill more stable than a brace and bit but I don't own a brace so it's not relevant.

Your over thinking it. If your still worried though, as Thomas said, drill a small hole then enlarge it with progressively bigger bits

Long holes through odd shaped wood, I usually clamp a bit in my drill press vice, leave only the tip sticking straight up. Center it with chuck.

Start your hole on the critical end while resting the center of other end hole (buttstock end) on the bit in vice.

I turn the stock slowly while drilling to offset any developing walk.

With buttstock screws, I generally go all the way through with minor diameter then open it up from buttplate forward until I have screw sticking out the front the length needed.

Of course you can do a ‘meet in the middle’ and if you’re off a tad, it won’t be the end of the world.

Another tip, after going so far in the press, I switch to hand drill if I feel my bit fits snug enough to not wander.

And another, start with short bits on the press. They wander less during that first critical couple of inches.

While I was writing, Dave posted this good advice. His advice to "meet in the middle" or bore halfway from both ends is the way I've done it. No matter how careful you are the bit will try to follow the grain and wander a little. This way any error in alignment will be deep inside the stock and won't matter.

Great input, guys!

The typical Crosman mounting bolt is 5/16-18 and the typical Crosman stock thru hole is 3/8",
with about a 5/8" or 11/16" section 4" or so deep from the butt end.

The pirouette idea has merit, as do the other notions put forward.
I just know that the longer the bit, the more prone to wandering it becomes.
Whatever method, it will take several set-ups in order to drill a 12" deep hole with a drill press that has about 3" of travel.
I have a good supply of Crosman 622 stocks for my needs, but will want to do something custom when those run out.

Here's an interesting video I came across:

Interesting mod to the drill bit....

Now for the redneck version for those without tall drill press.

Layout a line along the side the path you want to take. Layout a line along the top the same.

Using long drillbit in hand drill, the drill operator keeps it in line along the axis he can see——your wife, kid, beer drinking buddy, etc. keeps it aligned along the other axis. You’ll be surprised at the accuracy of the human eye.

Come to think of it, I have come across 1 stock so far in which the clearance hole from the butt and the smaller bolt
thru hole are not quite concentric......maybe Crosman comes in from each end.....
