Title: New FX Chronograph-My take on it.
Post by: 2L8 on August 02, 2019, 01:02:54 AM
New FX Chronograph = Out of the Box Disappointment. That is what I have to say at this point, but I am optimistic.

•   Back-story:  Benjamin Marauder G2 .22 looking to put JSB 18.13 in <2” @ 100yd (it is possible!)
Added a new Huma, Tim Hill hammer w/255 and 262 option spring and PEEK with .160 TP.
I was making some adjustments to the Bar @ 120-130-150-145… and wanted to log my progress.
•   Replaced my Caldwell Chrono with a fancy new FX Radar Chrono!! Sweet!
Did exactly what FX says to do for setup (1-2-3-) and it worked great…for 2 strings.
•   Problem: No consistent connection (error=no shot log, or not seen) or readings. Just plane wacko.
Question:  Is it software or hardware...Or me? (Computer tech and mechanical guy, so challenge my analysis please.)
I cannot get the Bluetooth on my Samsung Note5 (Samsung S5 tested as well with the same results) to consistently recognize the FX chrono.
I do get a BT connection error of “Pairing rejected by FxChr20”,odd, and when that happens it is a no go for sure. Used Cleaning APPS to uninstall and rid the phone of any bits left and re-installed over and over. Try a new sequence of install and boot parameters. Log results…No consistency.
Email to FX has been sent with questions.
The sequence that FX states to connect your APP to the chrono is important. My phone never connects the same way twice. I will get a string, do some adjustments, reconnect and try a new string and the chrono reads “0” on the next few shots of the string and not work again. Hmmm.
I am shooting indoors at short range. Some (lots) of computers and some metal stuff and fans, but nothing totally out of the ordinary (for me) I would say.
I’m talking 50fps adjustments so I’m not out of the range of 800-900-920fps of the chrono. I have spent 15+ hours with a flow chart of combinations with  boot sequence, APP configurations and adjustments to the placement of the chrono  ad nauseam,  and, I bought a  second FX chrono   just to make sure the first one wasn’t bad.
•   Results: Same for both. Bummer.
They could be (are, I think) from the same lot batch.
Finicky for me? Um, yea. This is not necessary.
If it is broken, I know FX will fix it.
Believe me, Software is always playing catch-up to Hardware. It takes time when a new product is developed (re-developed, iykwim).
But, I will not dismiss that it could be the classic “user.exe” that is the problem here. LOL

What am I missing here? This is not complicated.
I am laughing my butt off as I think there is a simple solution that I just don’t see.

Bummer.  I've been using one for a few weeks and it has never lost connectivity with my apple devices.   Wonder if you have access to an old iphone to test and if it doesnt, the unit you got is defective.    Since mine is on for ~3 hours/day I have found it eats batteries.   the FX does not seem to be as consistent as my F1, but it is way easier to use.   Good luck.

Well… Here is some great news.

I posted in “various other locations” to get feedback from all who have these pocket size wonders. I got an instant response from Jukka Fiskari himself (the software desiginer). He gave me a great suggestion saying that with an Android you cannot do any “pairing” whatsoever in Bluetooth, and If it is “paired” it will reject the connection. So if you don’t see “FxChr20” in your BT paired list you are good to go. Let the software and the FX chrono just be BT buddies, no need to mess with any settings.

All those ITTT parameters were on my flow chart but it was still giving me “0”, Zero, nada, zilch returns…Frustrating.

Then the Miracle discovery happened!!

What had happened is early on in my testing I had my smart phone about 2’ away from the FX and all was good. Moved my testing setup for some adjustments to my Marauder, put it all back into test mode setup and had the smart phone closer (6”) to the FX this time and got random readings, or none. That’s when I started micro moving the FX around and re-configuring the software ad nauseam.

I then moved the phone 6’ away to another table and it worked for EVERY shot. WHAT???

Who-da-thunk you could have your phone to close to the FX chrono to get a reading? Problem solved.

I have the FX chrono 2” back under my barrel and ½” below it. Perfect.
Conclusion: Move your phone around.

I would definitely call this a “user.exe” error. My bad. So all is good again in FX land. What a nice little gadget it is.

Glad you're happy, but it almost sounds like you got a visit from the FX men in black! Ha! ;)

This is great info!  Still waiting for mine to arrive, but it’s nice to know some of these tips and tricks before hand so I don’t have to figure these things out on my own!

I think mine got put on the wrong boat from Sweden and is doing a world tour in the wrong direction!

My issue wasn’t connecting to it, rather missed readings and inconsistencies.

I made this out of a milk crate, works great. Over 110 shots, missed 1

I finally got mine, and have been using it for the past few weeks with no problems.  I have it set on a tripod infant of my shooting tripod.  The chrony sits about 2" below the barrel and about 4" behind the muzzle.  So far I have not had any issues with it pairing with my iPhone.  But, you do have to pair it from within the FX app, not settings.  I usually have my phone about 3' from the chrony.  I did order one of the Foxdog Outfitters mounts so I can attach it to the tank of my FX Royale and Hatsan NovaStar.  It should work for the FX Crown and Raptor too, if they ever arrive...

Could it be that using it indoors and that it uses radar it could've messed up the com between the crono and your device? Too many radio waves bouncing around??

Mine is a inconsistent POS like many FX products I read bout on this forum.

If I use it infrequently, weeks between use, it will work, but if I take a 20 minute break, it quits.  It does not matter if I keep it on or turn it off when taking a break, it will not work when I start again.

I have the app on both a Apple iPhone and iPAD, today it will not connect to the device, but did earlier.

I shoot at 11 yards, indoors at 500 to 550 FPS.

And yes, I have it on the correct velocity settings and on 20%.  I thought it might be low batteries, and at times new batteries get it working, but at times they do not.

It’s most consistent feature is it’s inconsistency.

I have been playing with a FX chrony for about 2 years now and I must say it has been challenging at times.

I like the simple design and set up compared to my old Caldwell(especially indoors).

I am not a fan of the app right now.

It would be nice if you could see your velocity and energy at the same time.  It would also be nice if it would give a summary in your saved strings.

I like that you can create multiple profiles for different guns, but it would be nice if you could save different projectiles within those profiles.

All in all I am happy with it, but it has its quirks.

Patiently waiting for a major update.
