You may or may not hear somewhere that you can buy a rifled barrel from crosman that is a drop in for the model 760, well it might not work in your gun so here's what you need to know.
if you're gun is self cocking it will not accept this current rifled barrel.
If it was made in 1977 or later it should be manual cocking and will accept this rifled barrel, though some may require you to clip off a little nib on the barrels' plastic chamber block so it will fit.

CROSMAN PRODUCT DATES OF MANUFACTURE
This page will help you ascertain when your Crosman gun was in production. In the year 1975 Crosman Corporation began to use a serial number system that can help you identify when your gun was made. Prior to 1975 our serial number system was limited only to warranty concerns.
In order to be more accurate, you can use the serial number as an indicator.
If your Crosman airgun was manufactured after July of 1975, the first three or four digits of the serial number indicate the month and year the gun was built. For example if the first three or four digits of the serial number were 1179 or N79 then your gun was manufactured in November of 1979.
Just to note, a self cocking gun is one that doesn't have to be cocked to fire, the valve cocks itself by way of air pressure when you pump it.

Good thing for folks to know. My variant one 760 Powermaster (1966-70) does have a number stamped on the pump tube end cap. Mine was stamped, " 68" which I'm told means 6-68, or June 1968. A lil heads up on the earlier, pre-'75 ones.

This is normally accurate if it's not too filled in with paint to read , however you can end up with things like my 2nd variant ( in production from '71-'74 ) that's got 3 6 on it.
This is only an issue Because it appears to have been original to the gun.

They're good for using up parts they have laying around. The difference with Ford, though, was we all had to count out all the parts for the different model engines we built in Cleveland so they knew how many they could complete. Boxing the rest out on the dock as service parts. I know mine has to be right, since I'm the original owner and remember my age when I bought it.

My 1st variant 760 has 11 6 on the tube end. Any idea what t means?

Also, 2 of us found a couple N.O.S. 761xl barrels (New Old Stock-what NOS stood for in our day) by way of Mike Baker in MT. They are identical in every respect to the smoothbore .177 barrels the 760 Powermaster variant 1's cam with. Save for being rifled. They measure an identical 20 3/4 inches long. All the front and rear site holes, breech opening, gas ports, etc are exactly the same and an even swap.
But be warned-they are becoming exceedingly rare! Much less being fortunate enough to stumble onto N.O.S.! Or even a slightly rusty used one. All the rest of the rifles parts are still available on Ebay and other gun sites. But the barrels are already gone. I searched for months before Mike chimed in. Thank God for small favors! After polishing from 400 to 2,500 grit emery paper;

*PS- the crown on the end of the barrel is a little rough in my estimation. Gotta see if that Crane Cams valve grinding stuff we also used for new cam lobe break-in is still good?

Sorry I don't have any more of the 761 barrels to sell. If any knows where I could get about 10 new and 5 used early barrels rifled let me know. Thanks

So OK, we can't buy new barrels for our old, pre-1977 Crosman 760s, without finding the increasingly rare person who has old stock.
What features, or lack thereof makes the new 760 barrel not fit the older 760 models?
Is there something we can do to change the new barrel so it will fit older models?

Well, from working on them, it's the thing on the inside end of the barrel to mount them that's different. You'd have to get the right inner mount for your rifle, basically.

The earlier ones also had a barrel with a breech cut into it and don't use the seperate mounting piece like the later models do.
