Don gave you excellent advice.  Always check your local town/village/county laws.  Like Don said, no problem target shooting or small game hunting out here in Suffolk provided of course you have permission to be on the land and are a safe distance from any occupied dwellings, schools, etc.  One thing to keep in mind is that small game hunting is legal in NY provided you are using an air rifle that is at least .177 caliber and has a muzzle velocity of at least 600 FPS however the NYS Environmental Conservation Law authorizing air guns for small game hunting also states that when used to hunt with an air rifle is legally defined and classified as an "Firearm", just like a powder burner...... which means minimum 500 foot distance from dwellings, schools, etc, no shooting so the load/pellet will pass over or upon any roadway and of course none of those "things" that go on the end of the barrel that dampen noise.  Hope this helps you out.

I guess this means we cant even shoot from our own backyard  >:( :

Massapequa here also if you don't know the Brookhaven range on 25A has a 110 yard pellet rifle only line and it only costs $10 for the day. I want to try and organize a fun shoot in the spring March or early April 2017 . I know with the holidays coming up fast then cold weather Jan & Feb I figure late March or early April to blow off the cabin fever will be fun

I live in Oceanside Nassau County. Exactly right. Airgun is considered firearm in Long Island. no discharge in Nassau County. Suffolk County is okay in certain towns must check local laws. There are two  outdoor ranges in Suffolk County Brookhaven and Calverto that seem good for Airguns. Calverton goes out to 200 yards. I called DEC police last year and they told me that airgun shrouds are perfectly legal as long as they are not after market. I purchased a BNM Crosman 2240 with breech and shroud. I was told the Shroud is okay to hunt with on state-managed lands according to DEC police. Going to get my hunting license after I take my hunting safety course next week. It appears that Rocky Point and Otis Pike are two good small game hunting areas in Suffolk County for airgun shooters. my understanding is that it is more relaxed  Upstate New York as there is more land and fewer people. Kind of makes sense since Nassau and Suffolk County are quite densely populated.
