Title: Sumatra and foster leak?- Got it!
Post by: Prouzy on February 26, 2016, 07:48:48 PM
Ive never had an issue with a foster and this hun is new to me, which by the why is simply just an awesome rifle (long in .22) and I suspect the first of more.

I noticed air being lost, about 4-5 days to completely empty. Checked everything external, foster seemed loose, maybe from shipping.  Tightening seemed much improved but now its losing at a faster rate.  Now, it takes a but to get filling started and when bleeding the line, all air comes out, ie foster valve not closing.

Does that sound like the foster or something else? Anything to do or just get another fitting?

Hi Dave

Thanks for this! Read it over briefly, hopefully the few taps will do it.  Man, this is discouraging from recent purchase.  It had been resealed about 10 months ago, so hoping its just something simple. Thanks!

This also happened to my Sumatra. I got my compressor going and basted a few shots of air into the check valve. That cleared up whatever caused it to leak and all has been fine ever since. Perhaps it was dust or a tweaked valve. May not be your problem but it wouldn't hurt to try.

Thanks Reno1, anything is worth it if it results in not sending it somewhere. Im only filling to 1900psi too, may be low to shut down a stuck valve??? Need to fill tanks.

Still tinkering, tried the air blasting but wish I could do it from the other side.  Was going to try the original probe valve but dont seem to have the right adapter??? Im on the hunt for a spanner wrench too!

Under magnificatio, saw something in the hole. There was an oring that had split and in lengthwise.  Pulled it out but still same issue.  Maybe it permanently damaged? Is there supposed to be an oring on the foster side of that check valve?

Yes there is an oring in the foster, all of them do. Havent had my Sumatra fill valve off yet but, I did put one on my Sam Yang and the male foster fitting came with an Oring to make it seal. If it is like the Sam Yang the check valve is actually in the part that you screw the male foster fitting into. But I am not 100% sure so lets look up a schematic for the Sumatra.

Here is the Male foster fitting on PA with Oring, this is the same one I put on my Sam Yang and it fits the Sumatra. If I am correct the the check valve is in the part that the foster screws into... https://www.pyramydair.com/product/quick-disconnect-male-fitting-o-ring?a=2841 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/quick-disconnect-male-fitting-o-ring?a=2841)

I dont believe your Foster fitting is what is leaking its the check valve below it! The foster if I am correct does not have a check valve it that type, it is just open all the way through to all air into the gun.
It could be a piece from torn Oring from the foster fitting got pushed into the check valve and is causing it not to seal or the Oring is torn on the check valve, if you pull it apart make sure you drain all the air out.

Thanks William, yes I do beleive they are the same interna for the most part.  I agree, after I took of that foster amd realized it is nothing but a fill hole, its the check valve. It actually unscrews now when I loosen the foster if I dont secure it so I can at least get it off without a spanner wrench.

Getting there! Ive shot it when it had the slow leak, and really like this rig so I hope to get it up to par soon.

I have the 25 cal in carbine and man is this thing wicked, I tell ya one thing it is powerful and I know the 22 cal is also, I have to turn my .25 cal down on power or it shoots way to fast. I cannot even imagine how fast the .22 will shoot, I bet that thing will do 1200 FPS easy with the right pellet, of course that is to fast but just saying look out it is wicked  ;D

Youve got that right! Not even on full power it shoots JSB 18gr over 1000 on 2200psi fill. Im trying to dial in on the Barracuda Power 21gr as they are listed as having a really high BC (0.040 on HN website) but will need to try the heavy EJ at least. I wish H&N made the cuda Power in .25. There is a Sumatra .25 on the aquisition list as well  ;D

I believe the heavy Eun Jin .22 pellet has a higher BC than any factory pellet available for .22 or .25 other than perhaps the Grizzly which shoots poorly out of the Sumatra.

The spring behind the closure on the check valve was apply just enough pressure, and space, to keep some debris in front and not allow to close completely. Took it apart and there was a piece and oring from the foster connect that had lodged itself through the hole in the check valve. Thanks to all for responding and shout put to Stacy at Pyramyd Air. Time to shoot!

William

I know this thread is old, but I have to give credit where it's due.

William...thank you for this post. My Sumatra Long developed a leak out of the Foster and for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. I read this and now she's holding air again!

So after she sat airless for a long 7 months...she's ready to be put back in the lineup!

Thank you again, fine sir!  8)

Anyone know the size of the o-ring on the check valve?  My Rainstorm has a slow leak from there.
