I see the cfx 22 on offer on the forum banner. Is it good? Can it be made good ? I want a underlever , I'm looking at higher end ones too but am curious about the budget model too. Thank you all.

The CFX is a great gun with four caveats.
1: The factory Gamo trigger has a poor reputation. Replace it with the CDT GRTIII trigger blade. (If not familiar with the GRT, do a search in GTA).
2. Expect to go through a new gun when you get it. The rotary breech o'ring seal is often nicked or sliced at the time of installation, causing low speeds. The sharp metal edges have burrs that the o'ring snags on during the install. They need to be sanded and filed away. All stamped cutouts with sharp edges need rounding so they don't cut the seal. Bottom line, expect to tune up a new gun and replace the rotary breech seal (an easy to source o'ring).
3. The transfer port has an odd sized seal, it is 3mm thick, twice as thick as a typical transfer port/breech seal. Sources for the seal are few but they can be had, usually from overseas.
4. The rotary breech has a long transfer port, much longer than a break barrel's transfer port. The extra-long transfer port doesn't affect the speed of a .177 much but it does affect .22 speeds. Anticipate a speed of 650-710 fps max with a well tuned .22 CFX that has good sealing.

Waterman, More often than not I've had decent luck with Crosman pellets in my Gamo's (I don't own a CFX, yet). Usually a particular gun will do slightly better with either domed or the hollow points, but rarely both shoot equally (enough) for me. Next pellet I usually go to are H&N FTT's. These are much more consistent than the Crosman's and generally groups will tighten up to some degree. Different head sizes are available for the FTT's, I usually test with 5.53mm initially, then go up or down if needed pending on difficulty to chamber. For JSB's try the 15.89's or lighter for a bit more muzzle velocity, if you wish. The 18's are fantastic, but a little heavy for the platform/FPE produced. They'll probably shoot well or even great, but trajectory won't be very flat. With 14.5gr-ish pellets expect only 700fps give or take (even that might be ever so slightly generous for a stock CFX?). Give your new shooter time to break in and for yourself to get used to the new shooter, eventually everything will fall into place. Keep in mind that's not a high end match rifle but should deliver fairly decent accuracy.

A CFX can be a very good rifle. Lots of tips already given here but the gun has a peculiar muzzle break and a peculiar muzzle configuration. At least on the riflesof my age. Probably still the same. The rifle is much better for cutting all that off, working a conventional crown and putting on another clip to hold the under lever closed .
