Title: Rear sight missing on a good old B3
Post by: Skillet on August 15, 2018, 10:45:33 AM
This B3-1 (or so) shoots pretty well, but doesn't deserve a share of my limited number of scopes.  This dot sight has a big, smeary dot (at power level 1) that is not accurate beyond 15 yards.

Does anyone know where I can buy a dovetail rear sight for this?  There are no holes provided for a screw-on rear sight.  I checked Pyramid and no dice for reasonable money.  Does any retailer sell the rear sight that went with this gun?  Thanks for the help.  Have a great day!

Google "Industry Brand clamp on rear sight" and you'll see it. Can't mention the guy's  name on this channel. Long story and it's not very interesting. But don't do that. PM me an address and I'll give you one. I have several and don't use open sights anymore.

Your B3 with the monte carol stock and recoil pad is a B3-2. Did you do the spacer to make the stock longer? I'd put a scope on it. Maybe a mildot. That gun should shoot good at least to 25 yards. Is it.177 or .22?

Thanks for your vote of confidence Tim, I think it'll shoot to 25 yards, too.  It's a .177 cal with a leather piston seal that might need replacement, because air blows by the piston when pushed into the cylinder.  I'm having fun with it: I followed the expert advice offered by veterans of airgun technology on GTA and bent the barrel straight in the crook of a tree out in the back yard.  Worked great!  It shoots well in my 10-yard basement range with the dot sight.  I added the spacer in the back to bring the length of pull to around 14-1/2" and I like a lower butt pad so I drooped it.  It shoulders better.  I'm looking forward to making my own leather seal.
I would enjoy having this all together as it should be, so I will take you up on your kind offer.  Thank you very much, I'll PM you.  Cheers to having fun with B3s!

what about one of those daisy peep sights?

Need to verify the front sight height would be a match to the Daisy peep. Judging by the photo the B3 front may be a little low.

This is my old .177 Blue Boy B3-1. Had a gunsmith friend mount the weaver rail, then he cut a notch for the Mini 14 peep, tapped a screw hole. Got the sight from a friend who got a new one for his 14. Second gun I re-built. 550 fps 1/2 to 1 inch groups at 25 yards.

The other gun is the first gun I re-built. .177 Peak B4-2. Kinda' like a B3 but the trigger assembly is real different. If I sold all my guns this would be the last one. 625 fps paint ball buster at 25 yards.

Here's some better pics of those guns and some other you might enjoy.

Good shooting . Later, You all.

Any chance someone can post a photo of the rear underside of the sight or describe what holds the rear leaf up?  I just picked up a used B3 with a clamp on sight, but the leaf flops around. It must be missing a spring or something.  In the mean time I stuffed a ball of poster putty under there to hold it up. The B3 rails are too wide for an HW77 sight...
Thank you.

Tim, The B3s and the illuminated target display you have here are almost way too much fun.  The blue boy B3 is great because they come in an orange color that isn't found in real wood anyway, so a completely different color is a bonus.  If mine comes out a good shooter after it's fully repaired, I'll strip the wood and paint it a fun color.

Are the various other stocks shown your own work?  Did you make them at home?  One of my life goals is to make my own design rifle stock.

The blue B3 had the same orange stuff but the wood grain wasn't that good. Homedepot mixed the clear Minwax poly mix and blue for me.

The Peak B4-2 had the same orange gunk. Once I got it off the grain was great. Used a light oak Minwax poly mix lightly to let the red grain show. I'm not a furniture re-finisher so the poly mix is fine with me. Nor am I a re-bluer. The exterior of the B4 was rusted and pitted bad so I used WD40 and steel wool the clean it and after tapeing screw and pin holes and sticking Q-tips in both ends of the bore I spray painted the exterior metal with P/U bed liner. It didn't have 11mm grooves so i had the same gunsmith put a weaver rail on it. It has tall see-thru rings so I can use the open sights also. The rear sight doesn't work right so it's locked down. I bent the front sight post to zero it. It's close enough with a little Kentucky windage.

The Thumbhole stock is a XS25SFB laminated bamboo stock with a Ruger Air Hawk in it and see-thru rings for the open sights. Got the stock from the same guy on the other channel. The Air Hawk broke. To me it wasn't worth fixing so I put a cheap refurb Black Hawk Elite in the TH with a medal muzzle weight.

The B3-1 AK's fore stock has the same blue varnish. I put a AK pistol grip, muzzle break, sling and recoil pad on it. I has tall see-thru rings with adapters in the rings to convert them from 1 inch to 3/4 inch for the little rim fire scope. It's got a 1 inch scope on it now.

The QB57 on the table has the same blue varnish and a pistol scope.

The target box is 3/4 in plywood with a 2/4 frame and clamp lamps. There's a 3 in thick piece of wood behind the paper targets. The other targets are cat food can and drink cans and wine bottle corks. It's 23 meters from the front corner of the table to the back of the target box. My fence is right behind the table. The table is turned at an angle so I can easily rest my elbow on the table. I shoot left hand. Simpler than an L shaped table.

Sorry, to much info, Later, Tim.

Tim suggests that s scope would make this B3 a 25 yard shooter and yep he was right as far as enjoyable plinking goes.  The UTG Bug Buster scope was borrowed from another gun for a time.

Out of four different pellets this .177 cal rifle likes JSB Exact RS 8.44gr best according to the crony, 605 fps avg with a spread over five shots of about 6 fps.  Consistent speed is good.  And so the targets show a reasonable accuracy for a cheap air rifle with a pretty decent trigger and a well-fitting pellet.  The two ten-shot targets show the last few shots drooping down low.  I might need a new leather piston seal?

The placement of the trigger in the stock is too long a reach for my fat, not terribly long fingers, does anyone else feel that way?
If this is getting painted some day, a modified pistol grip may be put on the same work order.

The ironing board with the carpet padding on it is my hillbilly shooting table.  Just started using it this week.  No opinions on it yet.

This is a lot of fun.

Good stuff, fun stuff. Might turn the ironing board around or at an angle for more room for your elbows. A longer scope might give you better eye relief without stretching your neck.

Just suggestions: I have soaked the leather seal in non-det. motor oil, let drip off over night. Takes awhile to blow all the excess oil out while shooting. Might diesel a little. Pull a bore snake thru the bore now and then. Makes the seal swell a little. Ruffing the side of the seal a little with a file makes them fit a little better. Some rubber or plastic seals for B3's come with the screw hole. On the newer B3's the plastic seal snaps over the end of the piston and that want work on your gun.

I've soaked the springs in motor oil for a few weeks. Old German engineer/airgunner told me that helps. Seasons it or something. Let it drip over night (Same guy told me about soaking the seals)

Grind the ends of the spring flush. Let it cool. I turn them against my palm till it want stick me. Might have to bend the end down a little with needle nose pliers. I just stick the spring ends into the can of molly. Molly the guide. Maybe a washer or two in front of the spring with molly to let the spring unload easier.

You can bend the sear spring between the trigger and sear a little to lighten the trigger. Bend it back toward the other leg. You can always bend it back. I don't grid the sear. To much it might not be safe.

FYI: If you cock it with the stock off that "L"  shaped metal piece that slides under the trigger is the anti-bear trap.

Re-finish that stock.

Ok!  That's some good feedback, Thank you Tim!  I noticed the main spring was not ground flat at the ends.  Do you think that's why it's kinda s-shaped when it's out of the gun?  All you mentioned above is good info.  I'll come back with more pics when things get done.  Cheers!

Sounds like that mainspring might need replacing. Know of one dealer who sells parts kits for these, includes mainspring, last one I got, mainspring shot soft. (Guess the dealer can’t be mentioned..rhymes  with ‘starcher’)

Have used a Maccari/Meteor mainspring with abt 2 coils cut off in a near identical power plant. It’s a B3 AK

The finish is sanded down and the surface is free of dings and dangs.  I stuck a lunker of clay onto the front of the pistol grip to see if that might improve my hold.  There was a lot of air in my trigger hand when I shot this gun and I wanted more stock to hold onto.  This vertical grip brings my finger closer to the trigger and all the other fingers are also engaged.  I recently read that this hand on the pistol grip has only one job and that is to pull the trigger straight back in such a manner as to not ruin an otherwise good shot.  This grip mod may help towards that end for me by providing a more solid, stable hold.
I will shoot it and may change it, then a block of wood could be laid in and carved to the final shape.  Then it gets primed and painted!
As long as the action shoots decently, there is nothing to lose in "tarting up" an inexpensive rig like this as long as the labor to do it is free.

Anthony, awesome job with the B3 AK!  The main spring is "s" shaped, though it fits the piston and the nylon spring guide nicely.  Think the droopy last shots are more spring failure than seal?  The variation in speed wasn't notable in a five-shot set over the Crony.  I might test it with ten shots over the Crony, to see if me or the gun.

You really did a fun makeover with the stock Anthony, that's awesome.

I have used a Williams peep sight on a b3 but that may cost as much as some scopes.  Just an idea.

The carving jig is simple and effective way to hold the stock while carving.  The piece won't move at all when the stock is screwed to the board at the forend.  The wood piece with the hole in it fills the gap between the forend forks.  This filler prevents the forks from snapping in case I get over exuberant.

This is my first stock mod so I am learning on the fly.  The right side has a palm swell and the left is concave for the fingertips.
Lots to do yet, thought I'd show the simple jig, in case there are others who want to play.

I have to paint this and soon.  I am thinking of using Ben Moore Advance house paint, in satin finish.  I might be able to get Satin Impervo, which is Ben Moore's solvent based oil paint, if it is still available in Massachusetts.

What kinds of opaque paint have you all been using on gun stocks that lasts?

Rustoleum spray can "Truck Bed Coating".

Thanks for the recommendation, spray-on truck bed liner is good idea.  I've seen it beautifully applied to a rifle stock, but no good here, it must be solid color paint or possibly deck stain.  I'm not going to find the color I want in rattle cans.  There is a possibility that I can mix a color using little cans of Rustoleum oil base, but then I'm back to the Ben Moore Satin Impervo, regular mix for a 100% correct color.

Pretty much done here, this is a very blue B3 that is currently shooting just fine by me.  It makes a pattern on the paper at 50 yards and is fine at 10 to 30 yards for plinking.  It was really fun to modify the stock to make it a "Target" model.  The thumb rest is the cherry on top to the more vertical pistol grip.  This is my first try in messing with the furniture.  It was fun to do, I like the change and my mods made the rifle especially mine.  The gun is a goofy color, it is fun to shoot, it's OK to bang it up.  This humble little B3 is is saying, "Yeah baby!"
