the check ball is more for upstroke the real pressure appears on downstroke and is the job of the piston seal to compress air then theres the spring loaded valve where all the pressure sits until you release by screwing the brass knob. just watch a takedown video and check each seal.
IT IS NOW WORKING GREAT-I suspect it was RICK67's teflon tape on hose fitting and gauge threads that did the trickCharlie

Sorry, that was addressed to Jimbo.Silicon oil 30W is what is required for these pumps.RC stores (remote-controlled toy cars) sell them for about $6.Bought one a week ago.Try the yellow teflon tape (gas fittings section of the hardwares) in lieu of the white one, as they are thicker and provide more sealing prowess.

Upon opening I noticed the instructions had brownish rust smear on them, the black metal especially handle had sort of a rusty residue so no putting this thing on a rug unless you want stains right away. I assembled it and tried it, it leaked of course, sounded to be coming out of the hose or manometer so I screwed them in tighter which helped but did not fully solve at higher pressures. It took less pumps then my other pump to bring up the pressure and seemed to pump my Liberty up better despite the leak. I will oil this pump with the 30 weight silicon oil and get some better thread tape, hopefully this cuts down heavily on the pumping so shooting my Liberty is not so annoying.
I wouldn't rely on tape to handle all that pressure there should be some type of gasket to cut off air.
Horrid shipping by Amazon. I got a box with loose pellets everywhere and this pump in an open box with zero tape.
