Title: Close Call!
Post by: Rat Sniper (AKA: PaulT58) on May 13, 2022, 10:46:51 AM
I wasn't looking to shoot a rat last night, but one happened along as I was checking zero on my .30 cal AEA Challenger.  The sun was already going down, so I had to open my depth of field lengthening lense cover to allow more light, so image quality is degraded.  Thia was also recorded using the 3-14X ATN 4K Pro at 8X zoom since I was shooting at 50 yards through the fence, so that tends to degrade quality as well.

It looks like the pellet slid right under his belly and smacked the concrete wall behind him!  He took off and eith he was back this morning or another one that looks a like like him, so he may have ran off unscathed!  I find this suprising with 44.75 grains of lead, traveling at 985 FPS slid right under his belly and exploded against the conctrte right behind him!  You'd a think there would have been some shrapnel flying forward and hitting him!   :o

So, he either ran off and died, or lived to see another day.  It would be a lot easier to tell if I could just convince them to wear name tags!  ;D

There is no way that rat didn't suffer some internal damage from that blast. If not to its body then at least to its mind. If you see a rat trembling alot or abusing tranquilizers, you know its him!

LOL! When I went and looked at the feed station, I could see a trail of lead on the floor where the pellet slid all the way to the backstop.  There were no visble fragments of lead either, so it pretty well disentigrated on impact.  I'm sure he got one heck of a road rash on his underside!  If he does show up again, and I get him, I'm wondering if there will be a bare stripe across his belly?   :o

That was amazing and a funny video! ;D  It looks like it went under him, then exploded against the wall and launched him forward.  Should definitely be fragments in his backside. :o

My thoughts exactly!  Here's another view captured with the Trail Cam.  The frame rate on this video is pretty low so I couldn't slow it too much or it got too choppy.

Paul, looks like you "shaved" it's nether region via lead projectile! LOL! If you shoot a rat that has an underbelly mohawk.....you'll know! LOL! Didn't miss by much....

Yea, I'm thinking that had to have left a scar of some sort.  Definately wasn't enough to kill him, but enough trama for him to seak out a PTSD treatment facility in the near future!  I'll be watching this evening to see who shows up and if anyone is limping or trying not to drag their belly on the ground!   ;D

I really want to wait till I get the AJP back from Umarex and see how the wat-whacker tips do, but it still hasn't been picked up by FedEx even though the label was created yesterday with an estimated delivery date of tomorrow!  I don't see that happening...  >:(

As always Paul, your stuff is darned entertaining.

I got one in a trap last night.  Wish I had the place to set up the kind of bait station you have but with our garden the last thing we want to do is attract more  pests. :P

Thank Carter!  You have a lot of Wildlife Management Areas all around you and a huge National Forest that's not too far away, can you go wander any of those area and help clear out their pests?   This is Florida where the outsiders far outnumber the locals, in both people and critters!
