Did some bench shooting with the 392P. The trigger is way to stiff & unpredictable for consistent pellet placement. The sear on a Benji is totally foreign to me. Can someone post a pic or pix illustrating exactly where to buff the sear, & anything else you can recommend to lighten the pull.
Thanks.

Owwww, these are awesome triggers once a few small touches have been done. First, swap out that tough spring that's sleeved inside the silver tube:
Now that lighter spring I got out of the backend of a click pen, not the long light one at the front end of pens. I followed that swap with Honda moly.
Next, the backside of the trigger(that silver piece hugs)needs to be polished up and sanded of rough spots on the edges. Also, the groove on the silver piece can be polished up a bit on its edges were the trigger goes in. I folled this up with moly as well:
Now, the bigger brass block above can be lightly polished up and some moly there as well. Not necessary, but you have it part mind as well get her greased up. As you can see in this pic that it rubs on the trigger enough to wear it down to the bare metal:
Now, the big bump is what holds the hammer back. You can decide to shape it a bit or just polish it up. I just polished and it's awesome. You will be very impressed with this trigger once you touch it up.
WARNING!! Be careful in the 2nd pic you can see the underside of the tube. That's a little bb for the safety.

Please bare with me Rob. Not sure what's up w/my PC. It doesn't load larger pix. So, lets see if you can walk me through with the pix below. All the details are in the pix. Please add anything left out.
Thanks!

Lets start with the actual trigger, from left to right on your pic. The one notch (furthest the left) that's shaped like a backwards lower case "r" is what is engaged by the safety. So, no on buffing that. The next notch(big one) is what holds the hammer back. Yes, polish this one up. The third notch is the half cock. No you don't need to polish this.
Next the pen spring should be cut to length or slightly longer. If it's too short it won't have enough length to push trigger far enough to hold hammer. If too long the tigger won't be able to squeeze far enough and the hammer won't disengage from the trigger. You gotta get that perfect size. This is the one that makes the biggest difference. Remember to put some moly inside with that pen spring.
Remember to smooth and polish up the backside of the trigger where that silver piece sleeves on the trigger. You can also get a small file or dremel and do the same inside the groove. An angle on the topside of the silver piece helps too as you will see it's a straight cut and a right angle corner is rubbing on the backside of trigger.
On the actual hammer you have it showing to buff the "half cock" lip. It's the other one you want to buff up.
That's the correct location for the safety bb. I even put some moly on the slide unit. Now, my slide moves from safe to fire smoothly.
Depending on how your dumping will be the determining factor whether to replace or stretch the hammer spring.

that's strange that you have a cruddy trigger on a gun as early as yours - I bet something was changed when it was sent back to the factory. The early Ps had very light nice triggers. The later ones were much stiffer.
but like Rob says, they are easy to fix.
The only thing I've ever done is switch out that trigger spring with the pen spring and that was all I needed to do.
I didn't buff the sear, though you could do that, but just be careful not to remove much or any actual material as you don't want it to be dangerous - and don't modify the hammer. so in your bottom picture, you have "Buff Here??" with arrows pointing at the hammer. I'm pretty sure you don't want to mess with that at all.

Billy, I would tend to agree with regards to a cruddy trigger. In hindsight the "R" we discussed earlier makes more sense now. The trigger traveled ever so slightly with the feel of sandpaper rubbing their faces together, followed by an abrupt stop, & finally a hard pull. Hellofaway to try & get close & personal with a bull's-eye.
My apologies ahead of time. I should of checked the contact points of the sear to know how much to buff. At any rate I think I follow you guys but just in case I've loaded a couple of pix to make certain we're on the same page. With regards to the spring, is it safe to assume start off long & go short?

yes, I think we discussed briefly before that in mid 1992 crosman issued a recall for all P/9 guns made up till that point because apparently on some guns if you put the safety on and then pulled the trigger hard enough, then when you took the safety off, it could fire without pulling the trigger. its possible that the gun you have could have been returned to the factory in response to the recall, and they put in that stiffer trigger spring and stamped an R on it and sent it back now "safer" but with a cruddy trigger.
regardless, about that spring.
I think I checked a few pens I had just used the one with the shortest spring and then put that in as is, without trimming it. It was still longer than the spring that was in it, and I checked to make sure that it compressed down enough to allow a full trigger pull to disengage the sear.
Listen to Rob's instructions though about any work you do to the sear.

You guys were right on the money as usual. I buffed only the face of the sear, the point, & slightly into the roll & mollied.
Tried trimming the spring to ¾” but the hammer wouldn’t set. Installed the entire spring from another pen, mollied & it worked like a champ. Fella’s, I’ve trigger modded before & where the other one was an 8 on scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the most difficult), I would call this a 1. Amazing results with so little effort. When I call for the trigger it’s there. I would guess somewhere around 2 to 3 lbs.
Well I think most of you knew this was coming. The 392 screamed scout mount w/the Swift. I think I found a whole new favorite. Man can this model deliver a serious thump & with accuracy. The test shots below are with CPH 14.3g & he shot right where I was aiming. Looking forward to trying the others you guys have recommended. Unfortunately these were the only ones I could find off the shelf. My guess is accuracy will suffer at distances beyond say 30yds with these.
As a plus, I’ll be irrigating again tomorrow at my favorite bunny & frog honey hole. Thanks to you guys, I think me & Ben will be ready. No trailer queens around here. Time to start earning his keep.
Thanks again Rob & Billy!

This looks great. Have been wanting to improve my 392's trigger without filing or reshaping - just improving the original. Need to find some down time and a selection of springs to put this into practice.
The expertise and willingness to help on this site is amazing.

Thanks guys & Mark I agree 100 percent. The knowledge found here is over the top.
Well, just made it back from irrigating & having a little fun in the process. If you can call fun in 103 degree weather fun. Long story short, lost count of the game bagged. It wasn't even a challenge. This tank stopped them in their tracks. I must say; this won't be my last 392P. The only limiting factor will be finding more.
