87 yard ghog headshot
«

I was bringing in some grocieries this afternoon when I spotted a fat ghog at the far end of my neighbors yard. I grabbed my range finder and RAW .30 then layed across my picnic table long ways. After ranging the kill zone and waiting about 10 minutes, the groundhog reappeared at about 60 yards.
It presumably hadnt noticed me, but wouldn't sit still for me to take a clean shot. After tracking it in my reticle for maybe 20 seconds, it finally sits still appx. 87 yards away. The wind is blowing straight at me appx. 7 mph, and the sun is shining bright. I hold steady 4U mildots , exhale, then *THWAK*. In the back of the head, then straight out the nose. Clean as a whistle.
Here was my set up. It helps if the picnic table is covered in bird "stuff"
El gordo. 25lbs+. Didn't weigh because I'm not eating. I'm sure the wild cats will figure out something to do with it..
Scrambled eggs
And of course... the RAW HM1000x LRT that makes it easy.
Hope your day goes as well as mine or better,
Rick

Fella looks good with that bright red nose. Wonder if he's related to either Rudolph or Bozo.
Good going. You plan to cook it or use it for predator bait or chuck it in the trashcan?

Thanks gents. I threw it out for predator bait though 90% of the time one of three cats shows up and has a feast. Keep hearing fox scream at night but lately every time I go out with a flashlight, they run off out of sight before I can take a shot.
Just waiting on the day someone makes a thermal scope like the Leupold LTO under $700...

Outstanding shooting! Nice pics and great looking rig!
Harry
PS.
I can tell you what your G-hog weighs within +/- 1lb, but I 'll just say it ain't close to 25lbs that you stated
The heaviest G-hogs top out at ~16lbs and that's if they live more than 3 or 4 years. Most die in their 2nd year... and I know what 15lb ones look like because I 've shot a few very fat ones from the 100's I 've taken, and weighed them, and this ain't it either

Thanks guys! I kid you not, I still smile every time pick the RAW up. Day after day it out shoots me.
Harry I think it's because I picked it up with a shovel instead grabbing by the tail or foot as I usually do. I finished bringing in the groceries after taking the shot and by the time I got to the corpse, it was covered in biting flies.
Was probably feeling the weight of the full sized shovel and the awkwardness of balancing a dead animal. Thanks for the heads up! Let's call it a 13lb ghog because I know I've shot at least 40 over the years and this was one of my biggest. My neighbor has a HUGE hole under her front step where I believe this thing had avoided trapping and gunfire for several years. I'm just happy to have supplemented the suckers lead levels.
