Friday - September 28, 2018
The temperature was 57ºF when I left the house. The rain had finally stopped and it promises to be a great day.
I hunted Canyon Land this morning. The squirrels were
moving
all around me. Finally, after about 90 minutes, one stopped for a short while. But I missed the shot. He moved off and changed trees several times before vanishing completely - POOF!
About 10:15 a.m. there was a squirrel barking at me, when this little guy came to investigate. Bad mistake - He took the JSB in one shoulder and out the other hitting the heart on the way. Dirt Nap!
By this time, it was warming up and I had too much clothes on - so home was my next stop. Very enjoyable morning.

Mike send some of that cooler weather down Georgia way. I was out today, temp started about 71, but was already over 82 by 10:30... did I mention Humidity.
Saw a few squirrels moving but foliage is still very thick and never got a clear shot.

Thanks for looking in, Ed; it is good to have you back and active again.
Way to go, Dave. When I grow up, I want to be just like you. Hee hee Well done.
It is nice to hear from you steve. About the cool weather, Hummm! I do my best. My Georgia sister is complaining a little too. She is near Lookout Mountain.

Great job again Mike!!!I got to make it up to the fox squirrel patch on Saturday. I got 4 foxies. Sunday I went back around the lake and got one gray and missed one. Nutters were few and far between on Sunday for some reason. The weather is really getting prime now. Congrats again buddy!!!

Eddie, I almost never hunt on Sunday - I figured out that the squirrels all go to church services on Sunday. Hee hee
Thanks for the reply and the report. You are indeed doing well.

Wish I could say I didn't hunt on Sundays but Saturday or Sunday is the only time I get to do it. Most of the time it's only one of those days. We do what we have to do...

October 12, 2018 - Friday
It was 46ºF when I got to the woods. There was no wind and the skies were clear. Nice.
The squirrels were moving early and often; but I was having an off day. I hit three Gray Squirrels, knocked down two, and found one. You will notice in the picture that there is a little spot of blood on her rear quarter. It is a through and through shot and what killed her. I don't know if it was shock or internal bleeding, but she was dead when I found her about a minute after I shot her. I took four shots at squirrels on the ground. Man, that is not very productive - I missed all of those. I was doing a bunch of stalking and the ones on the ground kept moving ahead of me. Note to self: Practice the "holdover."

You may also notice in the picture that the tree is growing out of a little canyon. I found the squirrel at the bottom of the tree down in the canyon. The other one I knocked down was in the same tree and fell down there too. I walked the canyon in three directions with no luck.

Too bad on losing the squirrels you shot. I hate it when that happens. Congrats on the one you found. I worked out the day off Friday and spent the entire day in the woods and only got 2 nutters. It was windy all day where I was hunting. Saturday I hunted a couple of hours in the evening and got one. I know you don't like hunting on Sunday, but the rain broke for a couple of hours after daylight and I had to go. The squirrels were finally carrying nuts for the winter. I found a hickory tree that was absolutely loaded with nuts and the squirrels were making a trail getting them and carrying them to their cashes. I ended up with seven squirrels out of the one tree in 2 hours. Needless to say, it was a banner day!!! Keep on knocking them down Mike!!!

Thanks for the kind words, Eddie. Those afternoon hunt are something that will come later for me. This Southern boy will hide at home from the really cold mornings and hunt the afternoons after the day warms a little.
As for the squirrels that get away, I seem to be experiencing more of those with the Gray Squirrels. Maybe they are tougher than the Louisiana Fox Squirrels.
Okay, seven squirrels from one tree in two hours would be a record for me. Amazing!!! The best I ever did was four from the same tree. But it was done in about 15 or 20 minutes. And I had missed a fifth one too when it twitched its head.
Man, when I grow up, I want to be just like you. Oh, wait, I will never grow up. <--- That is according to my Judy.

Mike, some of your cooler weather has finally made it's way down in North GA. High 40s early on Saturday morning, but very windy so the tree rats were nowhere to be seen. Think I am going to take some vacation time in late October and spend some quality time with the Condor in the woods looking for that "Pot of Gold" tree with a dozen or so nutters.

Thanks for reading my thread, Steve. And good luck with you vacation hunts. Yeah, that elusive "Pot of Gold" tree . . . .
We don't have the Condors here; but the Black vultures are plentiful. Hee hee Jokes aside, the Condor is a nice rifle for just about any shooting and great for squirrels.
EDIT:
To correct the size error. Sorry!

October 17, 2018 Wednesday Morning
I went out very early - and it was a good decision. The squirrels moved before sunrise and then shut it down. But before they stopped moving, I got the little lady pictured below. She dropped about 15 feet from where I was sitting and didn't even twitch. Notice what she had in her mouth - picture 2.
That was the hunt - One Shot, One Kill.

Thanks for the reply, Steve; and I did something similar this morning.
October 18, 2018 Morning temperature was 46ºF.
The squirrels moved early again this morning and then shut it down. The wind started softly at first but was doing some gusting by 9:00 a.m. I saw about seven or eight squirrels and managed to kill the last one I saw. I hit it in the shoulder/neck area; but it didn't come down - however, the tree was too small for it to hide. I finished it off a minute later. (It was on the ground when I first saw it but jumped up on the side of the tree and started barking. I guess one might surmise that it barked itself to death.
) It was a very enjoyable morning.
Side note: This cool weather has the deer moving - I saw five this morning.

October 22, 2018 Tuesday
The morning temperature was right at 30ºF and the wind was calm. I guess that temperature was just a little too cold for the
wimpy
tree rats that I was after. I saw only two and could not get a shot at either. On the PLUS side, I did see a beautiful deer at close range. I reported that sighting to the Landowner. Last week he told me he would like to get one when the rifle season opens here. The two deer-stands are already in place. The walk to the closer one is only about 400 yards. Walk to the stand; climb up and sit; shoot a deer; and be home for breakfast with Mrs. Landowner.
When he gets ready to go, he will give me a telephone call and I will stay away a few days before his planned hunt.
He showed some shed antlers that he found a few years ago - they look like they both came from the same animal. Five Points on each!
Below is all I ever see while hunting squirrels.

Morning temperature - 37ºF and a calm wing. The squirrels moved a little later this morning. There were four that were trading back and forth between several trees. I tried a shot at the far tree and hit the tree right where I was aiming.
But the squirrel didn't leave, just changed trees. In the tree closest to me where two were playing, I got one with a shoulder shot. It hung on for a few seconds and fell dead. Later, I tried a shot at a third squirrel and hit the air where the squirrel had been a moment before. It didn't even change trees; it just went and hid lower down. By this time the wind was starting to gust and I needed to get back for an appointment. Beautiful day and enjoyable hunt. Thanks for looking in.
