We are saying goodbye to Amber our cat for the last 17 years. She was a fourteenth birthday present for our daughter. She's been a "dang" good cat. She has survived several moves as I transferred from park to park during my career. She adjusted to a variety of wild environments and never seemed challenged. The daughter is now 31 and she's here with us now. Amber was born feral and never lost her instincts. She was a great slayer of rats, mice, and snakes. She would place her paw on a fresh kill, throw back her head, and yowl her victory cry.
Sadie is a huge mongrel cur. Nicknamed Flytrap because of her tendency to leap up and clap her great jaws together catching flying insects. She is sixteen years old and failing. We have made the decision to have her put down. She is clearly in pain now and has no quality of life. Best darned frisbee dog I ever had. She wasn't a dog I wanted when we got her and she has been a trial. But I've grown to love her and I will miss her when she's gone.
"Brothers and Sisters I bid you beware of giving your hear to a dog to tear!"

Captain Carter, I share your pain. Every time someone tells about losing a pet, I remember the ones that have touched my life.
In my profile, these words appear:
If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went. Will Rogers.
Sometimes I believe Will Rogers has the right idea.

Sorry to hear that Carter. We lost both our 15 and 17 year old cats just a few months ago. One to leukemia, the oldest, we think she grieved herself to death. Personally, I hold out hope that there is a rainbow bridge, where our pets wait for us.

Thank you folks. Its quite a wrench. We still have Flash (who's no spring chicken) and Belle (19 months) so we won't be empty nesters.
Around here Nature (and the memsahib) abhors a vacuum. We'll have a new cat before too long. Probably another pup too. We just seem to attract them.

Condolences, Carter.
We also do not have carpet in the apartment, assuming no vacuum implies no carpet. Just hardwood floors that take oil now and then.

I'm so sorry for your loss Carter. As you know I just went through this 2 days ago and I know your pain. I still have 5 dogs so it's not a empty nest here also. I can't imagine how ruff it would be if Raine would have been out last dog.

We appreciate it y'all. They were both great hunters and I know that Amber is across the river in the happy hunting grounds now. Sadie will join her soon so they won't be alone.

Sam sorry to hear that. I swore no more cats after I had to put mine down after 17yrs but a year later this local huntress kept coming around wanting food and affection. Now I let her in the house daily for some lap time dreaming of catching birds while twitching her paws. Sometimes she dreams of fighting with what I suspect is her brother who died over a year back since they were always fussing and apparently she's not over it. She holds her fuzzed out tail up in her sleep then jerks with heavy breathing like the fight is on. I usually wake her up to realize she's safe in my lap with a deep sigh of relief. Funny critter.
Jim that's really tough. The house ain't the same without em for sure.

I dug Flytrap's grave today. Appropriately enough in the rain. I procrastinated about making an appointment at the vet but it's time. We go at 5:00 today. It has been a long journey but I sincerely believe she is ready to go.
Across the river there is game, sunny fields, shady woods, and sweet water.
