New to me mod 95

I wasn't planning on buying another air rifle this season. We all know how that goes. I happened to be looking at refurbished and there was a mod 95 vortex .22 non QE so the longer barrel.
Now I am usually pretty lousy with open sights but this one was sighted in and with a 21grain Barracuda I was hitting all the spinners easily. I tried some JSB monsters they didn't fit the breach well and wouldn't group. JTS 18.1 didn't group well either. It looked like a scope had been mounted but none of the other hardware looked to have been worked on,it does have some kind of pressure marks from sitting in a stack for the last 2 years.
Being a 9/22 rifle it has the new threaded transfer port I had to use a smell file to knock down a sharp edge, also changed the slightly knocked breach seal which was quite compressed. After cleaning the barrel I tried H&N Barracuda 15 and that grouped as good as I could hope for with open sights.
I mounted a scope with some picatinny adapters that have worked on other rifles, they wouldn't sit right on the curved tube and slid before I changed to some dovetail rings with a correct fitting stop pin.
I have about 200 pellets through and am getting under 3/4 inch groups at 30 yds. I can accept that and think I got a pretty good one, though steaming out the pressure marks and refinishing might be in order soon. My last refurbished also had these marks and they don't sand out.
I'll keep trying different pellets to see if it changes once it's broken in more. My guess is it has another year on the vortex o-rings like my others around 3 years when I will change them.
I kind of justified this one as another rifle wouldn't lock up anymore and I need a lighter than a mod135 rifle in rotation. Then I couldn't stand having a broken rifle and fixed the lockup for now still looking for a stronger spring for barrel lockup.

I have shimmed the barrel lock spring on a mod 125 with a stack of three small brass washers placed in the bottom of the spring pocket.  I am preparing to do the same with my mod 95.  The spring is available from Hatsan and I'm preparing to order several.  The shims are just a temporary solution.  The spring could probably be stretched and retempered but it would still be a cheap Hatsan spring.  I'm thinking about finding an aftermarket source for these springs.  Something of better quality.  I've had three Hatans affected by this problem.

IMO 3/4" groups at 30 yards is EXCELLENT for these budget springers!

I had a weak lockup on an older Striker.

8mm od x 20mm length is overall spring size but wire thickness and coil count are important.

I tried a few of these.

Seemed like ONE of them would be ideal but they didn't work as expected.
Either too light with sufficient travel before coil bound or good force but coil bound before wedge full travel.

Hatsan original spring still worked best. Either old spring with a little more preload and short guide (a small cheesehead screw modified) or a new Hatsan spring.

My Striker STILL didn't lock up securely. Then I carefully filed the crooked tapered groove like here:

The combo of a shimmed (or new) spring and filing a bad slot gave the Striker a solid lockup.

I store my Vortex piston Hatsans barrel down, with the idea that any lubricant in the ram will collect at the o-ring seal.  So far, 5 and 1/2 years, no leak downs.
Metal spring springers I store barrel up, to keep any spring grease from oozing into the compression chamber.

I tried some different springs and ended up shimming the old one. It's  a Gamo and I would like to replace the wedge with a metal one someday, maybe a crosman would fit?

Today I ran some more pellets through the 95 and like it more and more. I have been shooting a mod 135 in .22 lately.

JTS 21 grain semi dome and 16 grain both grouped well. I also tried H&N excite hammer which so far are looking to be the best, I think they are 14 grain.
I'm glad to have a barrel that likes a few different pellets.

After several combinations of rings and scopes I had to remove the optics since they couldn't stay still. I wear progressive lenses and prefer the accuracy of scopes, but this 95 shoots very well with open sights.
Has anyone had any luck with a red dot or See All staying put on the dovetail?

Sorry,  I’ve never tried to mount t red dot on my Hatsans.  I have had pretty good luck with this cantilever mount from CenterPoint. I found them at Academy sports but I have seen the same mount sold by Leapers and by Air Venturi and Optics Planet.

My Hatsan95 bought new from Pyramid Air also has these lines. I thought it was color marks left while staining the wood. Not sure what you meant by pressure marks from stacking?

Interesting. My 95 did not have those marks. I have, however, seen these marks on other stocks. I believe these are left by the cutters on the stock duplicator as it cuts each stock in turn, and then subsequent inadequate finish sanding of the stocks to completely remove them. Could be excessive feed rate or perhaps the cutters used were getting dull? I'm at a loss to explain exactly why these marks cannot be sanded out and the stock refinished if the marks truly bother you? The 95 could be purchased for as low as $100 recently, so not to be unexpected (the marks) on a rifle in this price range? Yours really does not look THAT bad, one would probably not even notice these marks if not pointed out. I have a custom walnut stock that was made for one of my powder burner .22RF rifles that exhibits those marks as well. The stock ALONE cost me several hundred bucks. The marks are not quite as "noticeable" as the ones on your 95, but they ARE there. Again, I attribute these from the stock duplicator cutters, and just not quite enough finish sanding. On my walnut stock, you really have to LOOK for them to see them.

Wetting the wood between finish sandings will raise the grain and help eliminate the tool marks.

I tried several one piece mounts and another set of rings without any luck. Using the open sights and 21 grain pellets seems to be what this rifle wants. Barracuda match or JTS semi dome are the best grouping for now.
I was feeling pretty go9d about open sights again and got out my Mod25 in .177 and the 5th shot went pffft. Spent an hour changing the o rings in the vortex and back in business.The vortex in the Mod25 comes out without disassembly of the trigger.
