I just received a modified Daisy 499 abutment today from 'hinz57', who I met at THR. He's been instrumental in pushing the envelope of the Daisy lever BB gun platform- he's gotten well over 400 fps from a modified current production Daisy model 1998 "Pink Ryder", as one example. That gun is a repeater. With this 499 I'm working on (made from a pile of parts, using a current production Red Ryder spring in place of the stock 499 spring with no other changes upped the MV from 240 fps to 420 fps. Changing from the Red Ryder spring to my high performance spring made little difference in the MV, leading me to believe the TP was the culprit- it simply cannot pass enough air quickly enough. The stock 499 abutment is on the left in the photos. Looking at the photos, the threaded side is where the 9" long(!) shot tube is attached, the other side faces the compression chamber/piston. It's easy to see how restricted the 499s transfer port is- the magnet that holds the BB in place takes up a big part of the TP and does nothing to promote smooth airflow either. Hinz opened the TP up to the largest it can be and still hold a BB from falling through to the compression chamber when the gun's cocked. He repositioned the magnet to 90 degrees to the bore axis so it doesn't block any part of the TP, yet is still able to hold a BB firmly in position. Testing will follow.
Can the same kind of velocity increase be done with a Daisy mod 25 or maybe a regular Red Ryder ? .. do you know a way ?wll
Mark, I am always amazed at what you can do with a simple BB gun. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting stuff, spring bb guns are so much fun and simple. I was amazed a few years back I picked up a pretty nice older wood stock pistol grip variant model #25. I installed a new plunger assembly and to my surprise the thing would penetrate a bean can on one side at 35 ft.!, this thing had power. I shoot it now with the new 25 shot tube, and it has power and accuracy, it's the best spring gun in my fleet. I have several other older model 25's and none have the performance of this one. Not sure if it is the spring itself, or the seals I have in the gun (they were from JG).
This is oldgeorge thank mark and Shane cobalt327 and restomod daisy . I rebuild my 103 b and it is shooting at low of 350 and high 367 I put mark spring in and 7/64 air tube as Shane said board too. I am very happy with with my 103b thank guys God bless to all oldgeorge of Carmichael California

You are a heck of a builder for a "76 y/o teenager", my friend! Here's his shooter. It now has an upgraded powerplant, hoop lever, refinished wood, a peep/vee rear sight, and a model 25 shot tube installed:

I picked up around 80 fps but the shot cycle is harsher and accuracy isn't as good. I'm going to keep shooting it and see how it settles in but I got sidetracked when I bought a Daisy 35 for my wife and then had to have one for myself.
