Received the AV46 back from Air Venturi today. Same serial number so it was not replaced but reworked, repaired, or refurbished (your choice)?  Packed the same way as before but I did get an owners manual this time.

Don’t have the time or weather to test today but it did successfully shoot one of the JSB’s it wouldn’t launch before.

I’ll follow up later with more detail.

Mine came back in bad shape, so I am going to refund it.  The lever makes a loud cracking noise, painful to my ears, as it exits the tube.  Feels like the cylinder is hitting the back of the tube, and the lever is very difficult for me to open and close.  I might consider an exchange if they would give me the one Tom Gaylord is testing.  ;D

Good move  ;D

I don't want my toys to be worked on, preferring to handle it myself where I can repair it with utmost care.

I am pretty sure there are scuffs/scratches now present  :-X

I am more interested in functionality than bling and they did not scratch or scuff it as you surmise.

I agree with you -- if I could be assured that the pistol I ordered got the same attention that Tom Gaylord's apparently did, I'd consider it.

Alter,

I set my Baikal 46M for max FPS by making the piston seal run into the end of the cylinder.  The resilience of the seal would make the linkage pop as it went over center on the opening stroke.  If yours is loud when doing that, and hard to open or close, then AV have gone too far in adjusting it.

After setting mine, I contemplated reducing the opening "pop", but it dropped off by itself.  No doubt as the seal imprinted the raised boss at the exit to the valve.  You may not be inclined to wait for it to improve.  Yours might be so extreme that it is generating extreme forces at the end of the compression stroke.

The AV 46M that Tom Gaylord shot in that PA article appears to be "running hot".  He measured the peak cocking force as higher than that listed at the product page.  So, I think his pistol is probably still in the snap when opening range of settings.  Probably done to ensure it produces 500 FPS with at least some lead pellet.

I can tell you that backing off the compression setting by one increment would make a huge difference.  I boosted mine by two increments to achieve rated velocity.   You could insist AV adjust it to your liking, or do it yourself.  I think they wanted to be sure that the primary complaint was convincingly fixed.  Or, the guy doing the work was using a shortcut to determine the best setting.

Each increment sets the piston 0.25 mm closer to the end of the stroke.  So, if you backed it off by two, the velocity would drop significantly.  Based on your description, I think you would be happy with it backed off one increment.

It would be interesting if you could shoot your pistol and see how it works.  Also measure the velocity with a quality soft lead pellet to see how much you could afford to back it off.

Thanks for the information.  I have read a lot of your posts and they are the most knowledgeable and useful for this pistol.  I am giving up on this one.  I am in poor health and do not feel like taking this one down and fixing it, so it now sits on my porch waiting for the fedex truck.

Alter,

A $600 airgun should work out of the box. If the manufacturer/distributor fixes it, they should not create a second problem.  A lack of attention is not a good business strategy.

That said, it is a pity that someone with a normal IZZY/Baikal 46M could not show you theirs to compare side by side.  Sometimes disappointment springs from uncalibrated expectations.  Including those of the person servicing the airgun.  A real pity.

Are you returning it for a refund, or taking another chance at making it right?

I am refunding it.  Normally I would fix it myself, but I have too many medical problems and do not feel like doing it.  I thought they would fix it.  Looks like they tried to max out the FPS.  I am not interested in that.  Most of my shooting now will be at 5 and 10 meters.  I probably would be happy with an IZH-46.  Or is that an uncalibrated expectation ?

Alter,

I have talked perhaps 4 people on this forum into buying the original 46M from Krale. While my confidence was high enough to do this, the idea that one of them might be disappointed somehow, in the pistol or Krale was always in the back of my mind.

I have bought 5 airguns from Krale in just over 2 years.  The first one was a 46M.  I have no complaints, other than that Krale's prices have gone up since then.  But I think it is the dollar that has lost value.

So; I think it reasonable to expect a real 46M to meet your expectations.  That said, the pistol has at least one quirk I can think of:  The front sight appears to be canted just slightly.  Is that real, or an artifact of the shaped grip?  Whatever it is, many people have noticed this.  None of them seem bothered by it when it comes to making holes in the target.

Why do I mentions this?  I would hate for you to buy a pistol from Krale, then send it back because something about it does not seem perfect.  It is also likely that such a pistol will shoot 7 grain pellets closer to 450 FPS than 500.  But, the cocking will be super easy, with no weird clacking.
