Title: Missing Screw - HELP!
Post by: AFVeteran on February 16, 2021, 03:51:55 PM
I ordered a set of 953 Truglo Fiber Optics sights for my 853. When they arrived the screw to mount the front sight to the barrel weight was missing.  I contacted Daisy Customer Support and they garaciously and quickly sent me another front sight - again without the sight screw!

Does anyone know the screw size for that sight, Part #13854-000? I'm sure the sight is supposed to come with the screw.  I thought if I could find out the proper size, I could go to Lowes or Home Depot and get one. I can't keep getting screwless sights from Daisy!  >:(

Take your site to a hardware store and try all that look the right diameter

I thought about that, but these tiny screws and set screws, in the big box stores, are in sealed envelopes.  Now I could tear a bunch of them open and try the screws, but I don't want to do that. I can always measure the diameter and get a length with a toothpick for a probe, but the thread size might require tearing open a lot of little envelopes. Oh, and the sight isn't what's threaded, the barrel weight is. The sight just has a hole in it and a recess for the screw head.

UPDATE - Just called Daisy and spoke to the same lady that sent the replacement sight and she is going to get in touch with someone "on the floor" and try to get me a screw or at least the screw measurements. BTW - she confirmed that the sight is supposed to include the screw.

An Ace Hardware usually has drawers of individual grub screws, set screws & machine screws etc  in the hardware aisle.

I can say something positive about it - we have no sales tax. I can't say anything else.

No state income tax too!
Or did they finally "fix" that?

Remember the good ole times passing by Delaware from Philly Navy Base on my Fridays commute home to Norfolk..have to invest on a radar detector, never fails to pass 2-3 cops doing chrono of your vehicle. Have a FL tag and put the radar away while a the bridge tunnel.

Don’t have a 953, but I pulled a screw out of an 888. Looks like it’s 10/24 thread pitch. That will get you started.

Thanks for checking. The hole in the barrel weight and the hole in the sight both seem to be a tiny bit smaller than a #8 screw size so I'm sure a #10 would be too large.

I haven't heard back from Daisy, so I don't know if they're going to send me a screw of even the specs for the screw.  This is very frustrating to have two sights sent to me with neither coming with the screw!  Grrrrrr  >:(

Is there a hobby shop nearer than Ace? Anyplace featuring R/C cars and planes will probably have. What you need.

I'm going to give Daisy another couple of days then I'll just have to take the barrel weight and sight to Lowes and/or home Depot and try to find a fit.

Don't know if this helps you any but the big box home improvement stores as well as the big chain auto parts stores often have a thread gauge near the nuts and bolts. Usually bolts and nuts mounted on plate in the most common sizes and thread pitch they have on hand. It beats tearing open packages. . .
I attached an image, hopefully it went through. . .

It's probably a gun screw. Much finer thread than usual machine screws. 4-48, 6-56, 8-56 etc. The big box stores probably will not have them. Ace does.

I could be that his nearest Ace is across the  river in New Jersey.
Risky proposition at best

I don't believe I've ever noticed one of those displays at my local Lowes or Home Depot, but I will certainly inquire. Quite a handy little tool. Thanks.
Upon re-looking at the picture, I'm not sure the barrel weight would be able to fir on the sample screws because of the closeness of them. Probably could fit a nut on them.

Check out your local Fastenal branch store. They will have the tools to find your thread size.

Any luck finding out what size screw you need?
If it's smaller than a #8, it could be a 6-32 or a 6-40 or possibly even a 5-40 or 5-44.(or even metric) We have drawers of screws at work. If you find out what it is and can't find it locally, send me a PM and I'll check to see if we have it and get it to you.

Thanks, but I just don't know the size. I've contacted Daisy several times for the size and haven't gotten a response. I also contacted Truglo who makes the sight and am still waiting for a response from them as well. The really frustrating thing is that I have been sent two sights from Daisy both of which were sent without the screw and Daisy confirms the sight should come with the screw. I have a few other sight options for the rifle, but I really wanted to try the open sights for plinking.

Is the part small enough that you could easily mail it? I'd be glad to take it to work and figure out what screw you need. If it's an oddball thread, I could always set it up and re-tap to a common thread. Let me know if you're interested.

That's very generous, thank you.  I'm still waiting for Truglo to respond, and if I don't get an answer from them I can always take the barrel weight to the hardware store and do some trial and error fits. I could always drill it out larger and tap it myself if need be, but I just keep hoping Daisy or Truglo will come through. Right now I put a scope on the rifle and will do with that.

Might be making some progress. Truglo responded with a request to send them a picture of the sight. I hope this doesn't turn into one of those jokes like the one about the farmer and the chicks and the soil sample!  :(

Well, I hit the end of the line with Truglo.

Here's the response I got back after sending them pictures and measurements of the Daisy sight which Daisy lists as TRUGLO Fiber Optic sight:

"Upon review of the picture provided we were able to determine that although Daisy could be using TRUGLO fiber, the front sight housing itself isn’t a TRUGLO product.
At this time we don’t have the information you’re searching for.
"

And here's a catalog entry from Daisy showing the sight on a 953 with a TRUGLO Fiber Optic sight. This is the sight I ordered and shows on the Daisy invoice as a Truglo sight.  It just gets curiouser and curiouser.  :o

It stinks that you're getting the run-around over a simple screw. At this point, I would drill it out and re-tap it to a common thread. Then you know what you've got.

Well, guess what - I just got another email from TRUGLO today. Here's what is says:

"Thank you for this email and additional photos. TRUGLO Inc., has recently been acquired by GSM Outdoors. We apologize for the delayed response.

TRUGLO Inc, did provide this sight for Daisy some time ago. Unfortunately, TRUGLO only provided the sight and no mounting screw We have no record of reference for the required screw dimension.

We can recommend you taking the rifle to a gunsmith who can assist you with the proper tooling and expertise to determine the appropriate dimension of the mounting screw needed."

I don't know what I find more amusing: that it took them so long to realize they did make and supply the sight to Daisy contrary to their initial response, or that they made a sight that was sold installed on the Daisy air rifle but they don't know what size screw was used to mount it, or finally that they recommend that I take my air rifle and $3 sight to a gunsmith to get the "proper tooling and expertise to determine the appropriate dimension of the mounting screw needed."

A while back I just re-drill the hole in the barrel weight and re-tap it for a known size I selected.

6-32. I used a flat head screw.

ETA- Of the half dozen of these sights I've bought over the past few years, NONE have come with a screw.

I know this post is older, but I found this to be funny. I have lived in Delaware my entire life, and at its narrow point where I live, it is about 13 miles wide!
The sarcassim is accepted ;D  I find when you live in a small state, you don't seem to judge distance the same as someone in, lets say Texas.
