As many of you know I like hunting metal as much as I do critters, I went to a park/woods yesterday and found the good stuff in the woods section of the park except for a little change in the wood chips in the playground. I have hammered this park for over 20 years now and have found a lot of nice old silver coins, a little gold and and some really neat old military paraphernalia. From the late 20's to the late 40's there was a small army post there. The park has been there since 1900 and previously it was call the Paddy Miller woods, the old Miller farm is still standing across Miller road from this park and I tried to get permission to hunt there but it was a no go. It's one of those places that's just so handy and only a mile away. Many times I'll just walk there for the exercise with my detector.
The old hatpin is my favorite on this hunt.
The old hatpin gave me a reading like a deep indian head cent would

They might sound like a lot of work till you realize you only need 3-4 pumps for plinking.

That is a ton of fun! Ive used magnets for years in lakes and water ways but last winter we went up to prescott az and my bro in law bought a metal detector so we could hit a bunch of old mines up the mountain from his house. We had a blast. Was like too little kids everytime the metal detector went off. We didnt find anything valuable, just old square nails, nuts and bolts, some bits and peices of metal and some iron thing we could not figure out what it would be used for. I am looking to get one for down here in Fl so we can comb the beaches.
Any advice on one thats water proof and ready for salt water and wet sand?

The most popular ones for salt water are the pulse machines, there's all different brands too, I prefer Whites myself, many different brands to choose from though. A lot of people use the Minelabs and Garrett's too.

Very cool.
My one and only metal detector was made from a Radio Shack kit when I was a kid. Dad and I used it for years, looking for stuff around old homesteads, campsites and mining areas in the Mojave desert. We found a warded lock, an old brass padlock, hammer head, wrenches, hundreds of square nails, brass (firearm cases), chain...... along with all kinds of (mostly) junk. Always exciting to dig up something of interest.
My prize find was an old wrought iron fireplace fork. Still use it regularly to adjust coals in the BBQ. Brings back memories of metal detecting every time I use it.
I gotta get back into it now that I have more time on my hands.

People always ask me what my best find is, I'll tell them the most valuable was probably a bridal set that I found in a swimming area but it's not my favorite, some of my favorite finds aren't worth near what the bridal set is. I think my favorites are the finds that I use a lot, last year I found a really neat hand forged broadaxe, I put a hickory handle on it after doing electrolysis on it and sharpening it up. I did post it in the forum already but I'll put it here too.
I've also found a good number of Zippo lighters, here's one I've been carrying for a few years now. I did restore it using springs, flint tube and wheel from a new insert on the old original.
I carry this one with me when I go hunting
