seeking scope advice..which glass for NUAH
«

I have just recently been attempting 100+ yard target with my Diana 48 sporting a UTG 3x9 Hunter series scope. I've managed some 6-8" groups in my second attempt so I'm making progress....likely being so low on the learning curve.
My point in posting....the scope....it's a nice solid inexpensive unit with crosshairs that completely obscure the NUAH target bullseye. I'm thinking I need a new scope to work at this goal a bit more effectively....something with an etched glass reticle, yes? What magnification is suggested? I almost think 3x 9 adequate if the reticle were more fine but I note quote a few 4x12 and 4x16 that seem like they would do a much better job.
I guess the question is .......is a 4x12 or 4x16 with an etched reticle a solid NUAH scope?

I have both 12 and 16 power. Both work for me very well.

Old saying "if you want to shoot small you have to aim small". To aim small you have to have a small target. If you have a small target you need enough magnification to see the small target. So it depends on your eyes. If you can see a 1" target with a 9x scope at a hundred yards great. If it takes a 24x scope then that's what you need. You also need a fairly thin reticle. Avoid center dots. They hide small targets. Good glass means more than shear power though.
Good luck, I hope to see your name on the N.U.A.H rooster soon.

My best NUAH groups have been shot with a Hawke 6-18 x 44 that has good glass, but it has been on my most accurate rifle, but I have shot nearly as well with a 4-16 x 50 Leapers.... For virtually all of my Varmint hunting (mostly Ground Squirrels) I use Hawke 3-12 x 44 scopes, and I find them adequate to hit the head (not much over 1") at 100 yards.... I find I can hold them steadier than a higher power scope when hunting, and like the wider field of view offered by the lower power.... but I do prefer the 16X or 18X when shooting from a bench.... I have used a 3-9 x 40 Leapers, and find that at 100 yards it is not quite enough magnification for GS, although more than adequate for Marmots.... On a NUAH target at 100 yards it is the lowest power I would consider, and barely adequate, although better glass may make 9X just fine, even for my old eyes.... On the other hand, I used to shoot a .222 Remington from the bench at 100 yards, using a 3-9 x 40 Bushnell scope.... and could consistently get 1/2" groups.... but I was younger then, and so were my eyes....
I see a lot of guys using 24X, and IMO, unless the scope has a large objective, they suffer from dimming of the image.... If you decide you need that much magnification (and there is nothing wrong with that, on the bench).... I strongly suggest that you get a scope with AT LEAST a 50mm objective lense (and 60mm is better) to take advantage of the extra magnification.... An exit pupil of less than 2.5 mm will show dimming of the image, even on a bright sunny day.... Exit pupil is objective diameter divided by magnification.... as in 60 mm / 24 X = 2.5 mm.... with another example being 40 mm / 16 X = 2.5 mm.... Avoid high magnification on small objective scopes....

Looks like a great scope for NUAH, Norm.... How close will it focus, I can't see that in the specs?....

The wheel has a 10 yard marking but I found that in my basement range I can actually focus down to 7 yards
I've had one of these scopes for a pretty long time on one of my powder burners and love it so I purchased two at this very low price.
I do not think anyone needing a scope can go wrong on this deal!

A scope marked 10 yards will usually focus closer on lower powers.... If yours will focus down to 7 yards at 14X, that is pretty fantastic.... I wish that scope was available in Canada, it looks like a winner, especially at that price....

Well at 7 yards 14 power was way to powerful so I did not go up that high. I may have been around 10 power

I can vouch for the BSA FFP. Great long range scope. I've made my longest critter kills with it. Next step up is the SWFA 3-15 FFP.

That BSA is built just like my Mueller. I went to look up Mueller and their website is down. Must be going out of business.

I just purchased one of these from AliExpress....
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/BSA-TMD-4-14X44-FFP-Hunting-Riflescope-First-Focal-Plane-Glass-Mil-Dot-Reticle-Tactical-Optics/32821284918.html
They are on sale for the next few days for $104 US including shipping.... and come compete with sunshade, covers, and your choice of dovetail or weaver rings.... There is a nearly identical model with a different reticle, which you can find on Ali by using the "Find Similar" feature, available from several suppliers, at slightly higher cost....

I got my BSA scope in the mail today, there was a short delay prior to shipping because they ran out of the reticle I wanted.... My wife allowed me a short time to examine it before putting it away for Christmas, but I do have a few comments....
1. It comes with a limited lifetime warranty from BSA in the USA, handled through Gamo, with lots of BSA documentation, so I have no doubt it is the same scope that BSA sell....
2. The dovetail rings that came with it are pretty tall, I will likely get a shorter set....
3. The side focus, magnification, and ocular adjustment all work smoothly, with enough resistance to not move when bumped, but not hard to turn....
4. The optics are clear, bright and sharp, and the reticle is amazing for sharpness.... It is quite fine at 4X and a bit bulky at 14X, but that is to be expected with a FFP scope.... I feel overall, they hit an excellent compromise on reticle thickness....
5. The field of view appears to be correct as advertised (I checked it at 25 yds.).... at 100 yards about 28' at 4X and about 8' at 14X....
6. The reticle I purchased has the lower post further down than the top and side posts to allow more elevation for holdover.... It is marked with alternating short and long bars, which typically means MilDots and half dots, but that is NOT the case with this reticle.... The short bars are 1, 3, 5, 7 etc. MilDots, and the long bars are 2, 4, 6, 8 etc. MilDots from center.... I determined this from viewing measured targets at 25 yards.... Therefore, the "half-dots" are not marked....
7. As you zoom the scope, the reticle subtends the same angle on the target, ie they both get larger together.... 1 Mil at 4X is the same size on target as 1 Mil at 14X, just as it should be with an FFP scope.... The top of the bottom post is just visible at the bottom of the field of view at 9X.... At 14X, the lowest mark you can see is the 5th long bar, which allows 10 MilDots of holdover.... At lower magnification, the top of the post is 18 MilDots below the crosshairs, and the post is hollow, allowing even more holdover than that without the post obscuring the target.... For an airgun shooting a pellet with a BC of 0.05 at 950 fps, and sighted at 50 yards, you should be able to shoot at 100 yards at 14X.... If you resight at 100 yards, you should be able to reach 200 yards without running out of MilDots at 9X....
I am very pleased with this scope.... Once I get the opportunity to shoot with it, I can then make up my mind about whether I prefer FFP or SFP.... Only using it in the field will give me that answer....

I just got this scope yesterday, very clear and doesnt seem to be easy to get parallax errors or
at least shifting my eye around doesnt get shadowing.
Zeroed it this morning and will try it out tomorrow at longer.
Too bad they dont have a 20x or so.

Rsterne and LennyK:
I was wondering if you have any feedback on the BSA FFP Scope that you both mentioned?
How did it measure up to for long range use?
How does it compare to other scope in the $100 to low $200 price range?
Thank you,

Any reasonably-priced specific suggestions for him?
I have a Bushnell Engage I bought from Midway that has served me very well. Mine is just the 4-12x40 1" tube and I have it on my non Ruger 10/22. I can see 9mm diameter marks at 100 yards well but I would have preferred it if it were a 16x. You might want to check out the 6-18x50, albeit currently they are backordered. Midway has the best price for them, in fact, months ago a scope purchase would get you a free Bushy Engage bino.
Mine will focus from 10 yards to infinity. The 6-18x50 is 15 yards to infinity. Btw, my Engage is made in
South Korea
. I was reading the reviews and I was surprised when some said it is made in
China.
The finish is also fantastic and comparable to the Elites.
