I just got one of the re-furbed Blackhawks from Airgun depot for $69.95. After shooting about 500 rounds, it started dieseling about every 5the shot. It string groups 4-6 inches vertically at 100 feet. The problem I have is do I send it back and wait 2 weeks for replacement or do i tear it down and void the 30 day warranty and take the chance that it just needs a new seal and lube tune??. I think i will have to pay freight to have replacement shipped ( Airgun Depot in Utah, I am in VA ) $18.00. Do I get full refund on gun and go to Wallyworld and buy Crosman Storm for $109.00 or take refund and apply to RWS 34 from Air Gun Depot ??. I looking for gun for practice for smallbore silhouette. I have some of the chicken targets and need a gun with enough power and accuracy to knock targets over at 100 feet consistently. The Blackhawk fixed would be perfect. The trigger is not too bad and size and weight make good practice gun because is actually heavier than my CZ 452. I do have a few gunsmithing skills, Dremel tool with various stones, and don't think building a spring compressor will be much of a challenge. Thank for any suggestions.

I'd first get in contact with them and tell them you need an exchange. Insist they send a call tag to pick that gun up, since it's obviously a problem gun and you have already paid for shipping. It's their problem and they should pay shipping. Might work, might not. I have had to pay return shipping on warranty scopes but they may agree to it.
I would advise getting a replacement from them. If it isn't satisfactory, THEN go the route of returning it for credit toward a different gun or getting a complete refund and shopping elsewhere.
After you get a replacement and it is shows no signs of defect, I'd tear into it and do a home lube/tune. Just make sure you get a solid and good platform to start with.

Happy Shooting!!!!

I would just continue to shoot it. There is nothing wrong with lite to moderate dieselling, and it's actually beneficial to the self-lubrication of the action. If by dieselling you mean going "bang" within the action, then your rifle is 'detonating' and that would be cause for concern. You might step up in pellet weight for a while and see if this lessens the 'dieselling' you have mentionned,....but we need to learn what exactly your gun is doing, and to use the correct terms before anyone can offer an accurate solution to your rifles behavior. Your rifle is a clone of a well designned rifle, and as such, I don't think they are too far off in performance as the real McCoy. tjk

I agree, BIG difference between dieseling and detonating. If it's dieseling I'd shoot it some more and see if it settles down, but I'd at least take the stock off first and clean off all the chinese mystery oil that from the inside of the stock and from all the exposed metal. You don't have to disassemble the rifle, just take the stock off and clean up any oil you can see. Then make sure the barrel is cleaned really well and then shoot it some more. It might settle down or it might not. If it's actually detonating then by all means contact Airgun Depot and arrange for a replacement. TJ is also correct about the Blackhawk being a clone of the venerable RWS 34 and the fact that if you get a good one it should perform darn near close to the 34. I have a Blackhawk that I got from sportsmansguide and right from the box is shot almost just as well as my RWS 34 Panther.

Hi One thing you might do is to take a pellet and push it from the breach end to the muzzle end and see if it is tight at the breach end if it is you will need to take some fine sanding paper and put it around a stick and open up the breach end a little . The reason is if the breach is tight it will form the skirt of the pellet ( kind of like putting it through a die ) smaller and the pellet will no longer be in contact with the rifling and go anywhere it wants to go. I learned this from Mike he told me some of the Rugers and the B25 had a tight breach problem and this would cure it, I've had the same problem on one of my rifles and it went from a shotgun to a one holer, also if you mean be dieseling ( smoking when shot ) don't worry this is normal for a new or just tuned gun their is most likely some lube in the chamber and it will go away after a while.Just so long as it doesn't sound like a rimfire that is detonating and bad and the rifle needs to be torn down and cleaned better. Gun is definately detonating.1st time really took me by surprise. Very loud detonation. I was using Crosman Premier hp pellets. Seems like a couple of the pellets seated harder and definately it detonated after shooting one that seated hard. Also doesn't stringing indicate faulty piston seal ??. It never detonated 1st 500 shots. What concerns me is that being it is a re-furb shouldn't Umarex caught rough bore/piston seal problem ?? I cleaned barrel bore with Wipe Out ( non petroleum based ) bore cleaner with bronze brush and mutiple patches after about 100 shots. Pushed a Superdome pellet thru bore with cleaning rod and did not notice any rough places before cleaning. Now I am afraid to shoot gun as it detonated that violently. Thanks

Contacted Airgun Depot last night and was directed to fill out RMA form online and supposedly pick-up tag will be issued.

Curiosity got the best of me. Took rifle apart. Found a couple of metal shavings on side of piston seal. Cleaned metal off and wiped out bore. Added just a little moly to ends of piston (behind seal and on other end where it had been scraping the bore). Did the sand paper trick to breech. Put gun back together and will try shooting more before I return it. took the chance because pins that hold compression chamber together had some marks were they had been out before. I don't think any one can tell that I took it apart.Airgun Depot has already emailed a return tag for UPS pickup. It will not expire for ten days. Airgun Depot says it will pay for freight for replacement but that would be a minimum of two weeks before I got new one. They also have some re-furbed RWS 34's for $145. Or do I order a new Vortech tune kit with seal $79. Decisions decisions. These springers are addicting.
Thanks

You might want to check on what year they were made it is stamped on the side of the action the left just above the stock, Some of the RWS 34 have china barrels on them you might want to check with Warren on the dianawerks form or maybe red feather would know which rifles have the china barrels. I did not think the seal looked that bad. It was just a little scuffed on one side. The first 10 shot group was still stringing vertically. Next 10 shot group was better. But during the next 10 shot group detonation set back in. About 4 of those 10 shots detonated. Also I noticed when gun was apart that the spring was bent. Evidently I did not get it back in the same position as gun now has ratcheting sound and feel when cocking. I think i am going to send it back and get the RWS. Airgun Depot said it would credit full purchase price of the Ruger toward the RWS and not charge freight for sending out the replacement. I feel that this was very reasonable. Seems to be a good place to deal. Even if the RWS has Chinese barrel, it would probably be worth more down the road than the Ruger if I decide on something different. Because $69.95 for gun, $69.00 plus freight for Vortek tune kit- I have $140 in total Chinese gun. Has been fun playing with this Ruger but the chance to upgrade to RWS for almost same money seems better financially.
Thanks for the advice and suggestions

I would prefer the Diana 34 even with china barrel. I have china rifles that are very accurate. I put a Vortek kit and seal in my 34 recently and it made it a completely different gun. It was accurate before but now is VERY accurate and also likes ALL pellets. A Vortek kit loses some fps. Mine dropped about 50 fps but the shooting cycle more than makes up for it.
