Quick .22 Beeman Chief up-date

Few weeks of being ignored...and a quik one-fill test session.
Another look at the Beeman Chief (detuned). Very easy dertune....just set the striker spring tgension to where the shot count started just a little low...rose to an even plateau...and fell off smoothly. Basically, just the one adjustment.
Looking for 24 foot pounds...found 23.5...close enough.
MATH FREE (as few numbers as I can stand):
No numbers to "shock-n-awe" you...just filled it up to 2K, aimed and shot at targets placed at 20 yards, and kept track of the rise and fall of the pellets at that short range.
Which looks pretty good...you don't notice so much the rise and fall of POI when it's presented this way.
Do notice the un-regulated nature of the rifle when the same targets are cut up and placed "shoulder to shoulder" in a line:
So, it really looks like the "sweetest spot" would between something like the pressure at shot #3-4 and the pressure at shot #27-28. Not that all shots couldn't be useful at 20-25 yards, but there is a noticable "sweet spot" in the middle that you'd want to limit yourself to when going for longer ranges.
I really like this 2K PCP. Had left it alone for weeks, and it still pretty much shot tho the POA of the last outing....and pretty much shot to the same average group size.
Simple...solid...shoots.

Was the accuracy that good, before it was detuned?

well actually there was one QB that picked a fight with Jason it took 7 pages for him to win...
It had some other issues hidden by a barrel with harmonic issues... and buried in that thread is a link that has buried in it a short few comments about some of the .177 barrels having issues with bulk fill and HPA causing inaccuracy but shortening the barrel helped...
Point is I do not know what QC the Beemans will have but I am pretty sure the are always a few that need tuning a bit... I wonder how different they are especially the valve...

Well Kirby, I have never had any problems with the barels of a unmodded QB. Everything changes the minute you take away from it as a stock rifle, as then you are not dealing with factory QC but your own. From my understanding the Chief is totally different internally and breech wise.

Did have a bias against Chinese barrels early on, and they did deserve the critical eye as there were quite a few poor ones. Good one was a good one, but too many bad ones.
Then again, most of us got our first taste from "tool truck" springers, which aren't exactly the finest accuracy tools....might have blamed the barrel, but many of those springers wouldn't hav done any better with any barrel (but even here, got occasional flashes of brilliance when a rebuilt, tuned, trigger ajusted, crappy cheap tool-trucvk springer actually shot great).
Giving credit, that was then. They got better and better over the years, likly though a tougher QC system (guess they took the "up marking" needs seriously...and hands-on-labor/inspection isn't as costly in their system...maybe they are waking up to one of the real manufactoring strengths they could have).
HAven't had a Chinese barrel need replacing/rebarreling in a long time...all of them have met my standards. Some really could have been better fit to the action, but no recent trouble with the quality of the rifling itself.
BAck to the subject.
The trigger unit and open sights will exchange....nothing else is a QB swap (maybe some screws share the same thread).

Most .22 cal PCPs of conventional design will respond favorably to a bstaley O-ring buffer to achieve a high shot count / low energy tune. You need a chronograph to evaluate your shot strings, and although it can be a fairly fidgety process of trial and error, it's very effective once sorted out. I don't know if anyone has done it with the Chief yet but the basic steps are the same for any rifle. Here's one I did years ago on a Crosman 1720T which is a .177 cal but maybe it will give you an idea of how I manipulated the O-ring stack to get the results I was after.

Haven't tried, but suspect there is a way of you really have a mind to. The o-ring mod mentioned below is pretty simple, and it has worked well for me...sometimes. Othertimes, after hours and hours of farting around, I just give up and move on to other down-tune ways.

Look Cole I am not attacking the chief I want to see if the quality of the Machining has improved... that Qb that jason tuned had some issues with the quality of the valve machining also... I do not think it was uncommon for the machining to be a bit rough... Jason has tunned A few he would know better than I...
I feel the QB was a pretty good copy of a Crosman with some advantages and disadvantages... If the Q.C. has improved with the Chief it makes it a better Qb...
The Crosman Qb was good also with good Q.C.... But
ALL
eh....
Since the Qb was a CO
2
design what I am wondering about the Chief is if the valve has been improved for the 2000 psi of air rather than the 850 psi of CO
2
...
The Chief obviously shoots well... me I just like knowing all the fine details...
But all being excellent is a high Bar... BSA L.W. have a great rep for Quality barrel... but guess what they both have had a bad run of barrels from what I gather...

If I did not have to worry about $... I would have already picked one up and had it sent to Jason for a complete tear down just so he could add it to the Qb Bible of info...

Well I see I must have stated something wrong as in I have had no problems with mine. If you want $700 machining and perfect engineering then buy a $700 rifle. People seem to forget that the quality is usually at the price point that they buy things at. I leave it at that. No arguement, no defending any thing. For less than $200 it is a good deal for me, and will probably be a next purchase when I decide to buy another PCP. I buy what I can afford, I deal with the difference in quality.
