Title: Let's See Your Home Made Gun Racks
Post by: Hoosier Daddy on February 12, 2017, 07:15:24 PM
I need to start thinking about designated storage. The assorted soft and hard cases are in various closets and under beds a rather scattered.
I'd like to be functional and  it needs to be nice, not look like made out of scrap pallets.  I have a couple ideas rolling around in my head but would like to see yours...
Hold 8-12 long guns.
a way to store, hang, or set pistols.
a door / shelf for pellets and supplies.
I am thinking something like JoeV did here... I also like the "Lazy Susan" circular style.
Then there are also these corner units

I bought a couple of these from Amazon.

I wouldn't want that many out in the open.
Maybe one or two wall hangers. Or something like a miniature old jail gun rack with a locking bar that you could stand four or six up in would be what I would want.

Actually, this is where the Discovery lives when not in use.  So I guess one could call it a gun rack.
Because I don’t do power tools, a friend [who is handy] built one for me and one for my lad.

Scott,

I have one installed on the wall of my bedroom closet, it's hidden by clothes, one the wall behind my bedroom door and the last one is in the basement in the same room with my targets and pellet trap.  I had to do something because I was running out of space to lean them against   ;D

My bedroom door locks and I have my long gun pb safe in there too.

You could probably secure the rifles with a 2"x2" on the side where the wrists of the stocks line up.  Another thing is it doesn't look too complicated to make if anyone is inclined.  I was not inclined obviously and I waited for them to go on sale lol

Thanks,

Taso

Yep, thinking about that same idea. One of our back bedrooms has become my "play room" and has two closets.

Have made several of these folders with different gun capacities.

And made this table model to display some of Gene's works at last years Fun Shoot.

Getting geared up to make several wall mount vertical shelves. We're moving and my future Man Cave will have a gun closet. Can't wait to build these and get some sort of organization.
Although it may be scary to actually SEE them all in one place.

Hey Scott. I like that second one. Might have to build one of those for my growing collection.

You can take a pattern/design and spend lots of money on whatever kind of wood you desire. And can make gun racks anywhere from a nice home display to museum quality. It just depends on what you want to spend.
:)
And it also depends on the equipment you have available and the amount of time you want to dedicate to the project.
But here are some great plans of different types of racks.

That looks perfect!

I was just thinking of making one to go behind a door, but didn't think of turning them sideways to save space.

Ruff sawn cedar is abundant here. I have various stacks of it all around the place. I have made several racks and displays and it's time to make more.

Unfortunately, no table saw, power hand tools only at my house.
Now that link you provided is fantastic.
I have been searching online for just such a data base.

Thanks Dez! This is what I had in mind.

Scott,

You could probably use a drill hole saw for the top barrel part instead of cutting out the scallops.  I think it would be easier and look better than by hand with a saber saw.

Yep, depending on the depth of the top piece, I would buy a 1x12 and mark a center line length wise. Then make the spacing spots for each bay, 3" or 3.5". Then use a 2" drill mounted hole saw to cut the holes. Then saw the board in half, to have two 6" boards with the gun bays. Or use a 1x10 or 1x8 board, depending on the depth you determine you need due to scopes mounted and such.

Canada wants you to keep them in a safe, all the time.  I have an airgun safe and a powder burner safe.
So no display racks in my home.  I'd have to take a room and turn it into a walk-in safe to legally display guns or airguns.

Is that an XS25 SFB I see on your rack? How do you like it? Is it a full MM tune? I am interested in that particular gun. If I am right PM me please. I have a few more question about it!!

Update - Unfortunately, the link above no longer provides any gun rack plans.  Apparently the owner of the site stopped taking order for racks on or around March 28.  Quote: "This is simply a restructuring of my woodworking business towards a different customer base and products unrelated to firearms. Nothing more and nothing less. No contact information is listed as existing customers already have it."

I visited this site several years ago and liked some of the plans that were shown.  Unfortunately, I did not copy them down and now they are no longer available.  Hopefully others had more foresight.

Putting the finish on the wood tonight.  Sealer and then the felt.  Disassemble then reinstall in the safe!

Thinking about building a horizontal rack for the shooting range.  Something rough and tumble you can put in the bed of the truck to lie the rifles on while shooting.  Felt padded cradles.....

A couple of weekends ago, I made this rack from scrap wood I had on hand. I got tired of my springers and pumpers laying around all over the place, so just a little bit of sawing, drilling,  and screwing, and these guns are now nice and tidy.

And just to conceal it a little bit, I found this Halloween door decor from the dollar store, to put in front of the rack.

PCPs stays in the safe

Yeah it is. I grabbed a few of them.
My BIL passed away last year leaving a complete shop behind in his garage. My sister recently invited me to take it all. We'll be taking the 8x12 enclosed trailer down over Thanksgiving and bringing his shop home. Then let the games begin.

If you team up with Dez you will be able to do everything -  lock, stock and barrel!  ...and probably ammo...

They aren't homemade although the Amazon claim is Amish made but been needing to organize a little so I bought 4 for $24.99 each and a roll of felt for the cradles. I like that the sides are offset so rifles sit level in them. Also grabbed a 6 section shelf from Valu to try and organize some of the pellets...what's in there is only .11, .20 and .22, I haven't even touched .25 yet and if I counted right, I have 10 kinds in .177, 27 kinds in .22 and everything still out there in .20 unless someone has a brown box of the Crosman Premier .20's collecting dust they wanna get rid of...lol
Here's the first one up with my VMX's in it, got some more rearranging to do before I can mount at least 2 of the 3 I have left.

About all I have room for is this A-frame gun rack from Amazon that was some $75. It has a textured rubber matt on the bottom where the butts rest(!) And each side holds 5 rifles. Including my machete and black powder, " possibles bag". You can also see on the right that the Crosman 760-D Pumpmaster is as short a rifle as will fit on it;

Older shot here;
 (http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/922/Vn4N7l.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pmVn4N7lj)
Space Is some 26 1/4". Rack is about 25" across the base. Great way to maximize tight spaces in small man caves like mine.
Here's the unfinished, single-gun rack I found at Etsy I'll oil finish myself for my son Matt's Crosman Optimus .22;
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/924/w3KD7U.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pow3KD7Uj)
  And seen here, all finished and drying for a couple days (last week now);
(http://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/MDdZQ3.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pmMDdZQ3j)
  I'm thinking of copying the A frame rack in oak like this one. Then stain it like this single rifle rack. That'd be beautiful!

Plain and simple 3 Rifle wall rack. I made it out of some boards that were salvaged from a shelf  unit that was taken apart. I cut the slots so that those rifles would sit fairly flat and I got the felt at Hobby Lobby.
