I have a WELL WORN early Crosman 101 type 1. leave as is, chase down the correct parts, or since the condition repaint and refinish the wood and have fun ?. this link from grantthekiwi's forum show the cutout's by the loading port and the rectangular locking tab.

The choice is yours. Whatever you think will make you enjoy the gun more. There are thousands of 101's around so I wouldn't worry about reducing the value. My 101 was basically a box of rusty parts so I restored it so it looks nice but not new. If your barrel is steel not brass you can blue it instead of paint. The receiver will have to be painted. This is how my 101 looks now.

Difficult choice, I always like original guns but in the case of the early Crosmans aluminum showing through black paint just doesn’t look good. Not like brown patina on steel parts. I think it’s comes down to a matter of degree on paint loss. The repaint above is very nice. I think original parts are the most important issue, as a collector I could appreciate a well done paint job.
