My first trial of the Speedy Pellet Inspector and Pellet Gauge to see if I can weed out potential flyers. I previously tried sorting by weight only with limited improvement. Now I think I know why weighing didn't work so well.
Pellets: Crosman Premier HP 7.9
Rifle: Umarex Surge XT w/ Nikko Stirling 4x32
The Umarex shoots CPHP pellets straight from the tin pretty well but there are some flyers that occasionally mess up a nice group. I know there is variation in the pellets since some are looser in the chamber than others.
I sorted with the Speedy Pellet Inspector first. About half did not catch on the skirt and fell through. These were kept separate and then sorted each by head diameter. Percentages are estimated since I didn't feel like counting pellets.
Stayed in SPI
Head Dia.
4.52 15%
4.51 25%
4.50 30%
4.49 25%
4.48 or less 5% (a few were even smaller than the 4.46 hole)
Fell Through SPI
Head Dia.
4.52 25%
4.51 35%
4.50 30%
4.49 5%
4.48 or less 5% (a few were even smaller than the 4.46 hole)
I thought it was odd that the pellets with smaller skirts, which fell through the SPI, had a larger average head diameter.
All pellets were then weighed.
Almost all were 7.9~8.0,
even the undersized ones
.
Three were 8.1
Two undersized ones were 7.8 and two were 7.7
Two five-round groups with each diameter were fired at 20 yards. This was done for both skirt sizes but the groups were pretty much the same regardless of being caught in the SPI or dropping through.
4.52 .75" POI shifted right.
4.51 .30" Centered
4.50 .30" Centered
4.49 .50" Centered
4.48 or less 1.5" Scattered
After the 4.52 diameter unexpectedly shot larger groups I gave them a closer visual inspection. I believe the larger diameter measurement is actually due to a slightly uneven parting line.
What I learned for
these pellets in this rifle
:
1. Don't bother using the Speedy Pellet Inspector. I found no visibly deformed pellets and skirt size had little to no effect on performance.
2. Using the Pellet Gage is a must to reduce flyers.
3. Sorting by weight will not catch most undersized pellets.
I'll dig into a tin of JSB 10.34 this evening to see how they do in the Gauntlet. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the wind is calm tomorrow and the wife doesn't have plans for me.
