I'm not gettin' that either, but here's another example:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Benjamin-Franklin-Air-Rifle-Model-312-22-Caliber-/123528484284 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Benjamin-Franklin-Air-Rifle-Model-312-22-Caliber-/123528484284)
Someone (or several in your case) obviously thinks their worth that much. Maybe there's an impossible to get/make part inside them?

Thanks for posting a link to the 312 Dennis. I asked the seller to post a closeup pic of that rear sight. I have never seen one like that.
-
^^^ Pic received. I'll post it on the Benji Collection thread for reference.

If you mean this part
(https://i.postimg.cc/RZZPxtW0/Benji-V-bar-clamp.jpg).
It is the clamp for mounting an O-Bar peep. https://www.bakerairguns.com/product/no-273-detachable/ (https://www.bakerairguns.com/product/no-273-detachable/)
They also make a V-bar version. https://www.bakerairguns.com/product/bar-v-rear-sight-benjamin/ (https://www.bakerairguns.com/product/bar-v-rear-sight-benjamin/)

Here you go Dennis; https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=147292.0 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=147292.0)
I'll have the photos up in just a sec. It's the guns rear sight that caught my eye. Simply because I haven't seen one like that before. There are 2 for sale on the bay. Unfortunately their both in rough shape.

Two guys keep battling it out for this little gem... ???

Two guys keep battling it out for this little gem... ???
It's obvious that neither of them know how to bid on ebay. Two hours left on that. Must be excruciating for them. It is for me just typing about it.
I think I'll go overhaul a gun or something. Still at least four hours before my stuff comes up on Liveauctioneers.
-
You're right...PAINFUL TO WATCH. For a little more these guys could buy a real nice gun from Mike;

-
I wouldn't even get in that bid myself at two thirds that price.
-
I checked both bidders history & it's not like they haven't dabbled in these guns before... but geez! That thing isn't worth the shipping charge. Everything but the brass is rusted on the outside so the inside must be toast.
-
I checked both bidders history
After 20+ years on ebay, I didn't know you could do that. All it shows though is the categories.
I hate to say to but now I'm finding some sort of sick entertainment value out of this.
Must be because it's snowing outside.
And my stomach hurts.
Or something.
-
Hammer price; $121.00 + $13.40 shipping.
-
Hammer price; $121.00 + $13.40 shipping.
Thank God that's over.
I guess someone had a limit at least.
That sets the new price per pound of ...what's it called?......oh yeah, Patina.
-
I was thinking along those same lines but at only $1.55/pound for brass still doesn't make sense. ;D

Claims to be book value and if it is as rare as he says, I guess someone might do it. Nobody has yet and I think it's been up since October 2017, judging by a note at the end of the page.
When I first saw the listing a few months ago, I realized there was a guy in the Pyramyd Air Backyard Brawl that had shot one of these. Then he applied some secret sauce and turned it into a kick-butt modern springer. Cute video.

That's hilarious! I can make one with the &^^& I through away. I've seen those baling wire guns priced like that all the time. None of them ever sell. The only way I would buy one is if I found it cheap & unload it the next day to some nut who would pay 1/2 that.

I know where there are a couple of old Crosmans for around 80 bucks. I'm gonna pick one up, hold it by the muzzle end and smack it against a tree, lay it out in the street to get run over a few times, brush paint it black, scrape some off with a dull chisel, soak it in slimy green pond water, alternate between a salt bath and blazing sun, then list it on ebay for about ten times what I paid for it.
If I add the words AS-IS, I can make it 20 times more.
or.......
I could buy a brand new Daisy 880, take it all apart, take a pic of each and every tiny little part on the same paper towel background and list each and every tiny little part on ebay for 10 times what Daisy sells them for.
I could do all of the above, but there is already too much competition doing the same thing.

I never thought I'd see the day when a Daisy would out price a SuperGrade.

I'd like to know how Marty is doing it these days? ;D, AFAIK a few years back Ebay began to hide the bidders real name, Ebay also began hiding bidding history on the feedback, they only show a few "view item" transactions now (Last 6 months), previously you could see pages long going back years. useful to avoid shady sellers....
-
Nothing complicated. If I see something I like & the price is fair I wait until the final clicks of the clock to make my appearance. The other guys are so busy paying attention to each other they never knew what hit them.
KIM a "Fair Price" must also give you some cushion for a max bid in case someone is quick with the keyboard so they have to enter the amount twice. Ain't going to happen with 10 seconds left... ;D ;D ;D

Or a predator... ;)
Learned the hard way. Missed out on a REAL nice Benji because I gave the guy 5 seconds too many.

I do the same, but even wait until the last 5 seconds, is called 'Sniping', used to have software that bid automatically in the last 2 seconds, not sure if they have any now, but after Ebay changed the way we can review feedback history of the other bidders in a particular auction, it became more difficult to find a "fair price" ..
-
So that was you? :D >:( ;)
5 seconds is even better. What I meant by a fair price is where the bidding amount stands towards the end of the bidding given the condition of the gun, box/no box, docs/no docs.

No, it wasn't me!! ;D... Yes, the "Fair' price should be the max you are willing to pay after you do your homework... :D

You've been at this hobby a long time Bill & I'm curious what you believe would be a fair price for a nice vintage Benji in today's market? Say for a 34X or a 39X? Either from a member or on eBay?
-
Marty I still can't get over how nice the bobcat stock is, you sure did a fantastic job on that! I'm seeing some deals on ebay that I'm just watching, if there's one that looks like a great deal just before the ending of the bid I'll attempt a last minute bid and see what happens. The only bad part of that is usually the top bidder will have a highest bid in already and the trick is getting a good idea(hunch)of what his top bid might be. 8)
-
Thank you Wayne for the carving compliment.
Trying to figure out the top bidders max bid is certainly a factor. The only thing I can do there is view the bidding history to see if guys are nickel & diming it or if the winning bidder has his name stacked. If it’s nickel & dime (bidder names changing constantly) I know my chances are pretty good. Not so good if the same bidders name shows up on consecutive bids (stacked). In either case I place my max bid & hope for the best. ;)

Of course, a "fair price" is based on an individual's desire to own an item. You may be motivated more than I am. You may also be better equipped to pay more.
Personally? I would pay around $150 for a nice checkered 342 and shoot it , at least, weekly. I would pay no more than $250 for a minty one in a box with all the whistles and bells and shoot it occasionally.
Now you know why I don't, and won't own either.
Then again, this is coming from a guy that wouldn't trade my Sam Yang Sumatra 2500 carbine for a SuperGrade.
Different strokes, I reckon.
-
Shoot Bill...we're in the same ballpark. ;)
-
It seems we don't have a lot of company in that ballpark.
If someone offered me a nice checkered 342 for $150 today or a minty boxed one today for $250 I would probably walk away. I have other irons in the fire right now..... next week may be a different story.
-
I'm in that predicament now as well. Stinks when you come across something for the stable & no play money to be found. This is when I change course & start hitting the pawn & gun shops in my area. I've mentioned this before; NM is not a AG state & there are some amazing deals to be had. Case in point; very nice Silver Streak for $50, Crosman 101 for $40, Daisy's for $30 or less, & a cream puff of a '71 880 for $25. Not to mention a cream puff of a prewar 312 dirt cheap.
-
The pawn shops here never have squat for the good ones, there is a flea market I may try this year that I haven't been to in years.
-
I guess I'm lucky no one out here wants AG's. Flea markets are another great target & like many members have said, so are estate sales & garage sales.
I disguise the name pawn shops with antique shops so my wife is onboard & we hit both. It’s a pretty cool way to pass the time. The trick here is to be persistent because you never know what will show up & when. In the case of antique shops the owners don’t have a clue what they have. Pawn shops seem to price their newer AG’s pretty high but the vintage stuff is usually low. With gun shops, owners out here just want to get rid of them. Playing dumb in all cases can pay big dividends, which for me comes natural.
-
What I don't understand is when we post a nice rifle in our classifieds we will get a tire kicker offer then see these ebay ads for garbage at ridiculous prices. Maybe I will just reactivate my ebay account and buy on the forum for cheap and then sell on Ebay for a small fortune ;D ;D At least on ebay when you sell the buyer expects to pay for the shipping
-
I am sure tire kickers have to be frustrating for members selling on GTA. I would have to believe members have thought long & hard & set their prices accordingly. I say either pay what they are asking or move on.
I have been looking for a couple of vintage Benji's but they don't ever seem to surface in the condition I am looking for. This is one of my biggest obstacles because seller's 99.99% of the time will not part with their best AG's (go figure) unless it's at a premium & I can't say I blame them. This is the only reason I am forced to look elsewhere.
-
Now here is a real jewel for you. Great scope mount work.
Gotta love the sellers name as well.

HaHaa!!
A little? Ya think?

I don't know anything about those guns but with the make offer option might be a bargain for someone willing to deal with the cr&% that's on there.
Definitely a front runner in bizarro world.

I missed that part.
Don't tempt me. I'm getting paid tomorrow. (I say as I'm looking up parts on TW Chambers ::)).
Definitely a front runner in bizarro world.
That's for sure. Mr. Fixit (seller) should be paying someone to take it.

Put the word RARE on it and there ya go.
Another thing I forgot to mention is the ridiculous shipping charges. You know these guys are tricking you thinking you won't notice.....until it's too late that is.
For example this, from just this morning:

$42.45 for an 880? Oh wait...it's "Expedited Shipping"... on or before Mon. Mar. 25...what the heck's it coming on...mule?
-
$42.45 for an 880? Oh wait...it's "Expedited Shipping"... on or before Mon. Mar. 25...what the heck's it coming on...mule?
A mule with a very expensive diet one must assume.
So let's see.....5-1/2 days left on the auction so it ends on the 16th. That's still 9 days of shipping. But wait, it says on or "before", so it could arrive earlier. I'm guessing that the seller takes their time to package and get to the Post Office, or something like that.
I learned that ebay trick long ago, and one of the first things I look for is the shipping cost, mainly to see if it's free, but also for this other reason as well.
There oughtta be a law, I say!!

What's funny is that someone over on the Yellow Classie's is looking for this very item. I emailed him the link.

LOL...that's me Dennis.
I found a new old stock two days ago. That makes two really nice 273's. Still need a few more. ;)
-
How stupid of me. I thought that email looked familiar. :-\

Now you know how I felt when I hit send... :-[

Man, I am so tired right now. Worked every night last week and did a 12-1/2 hour non-stop stint yesterday to finish a work project. Got home about 10pm last night, plus the time change....but mostly it's old age I think.
Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for those sights.

I don't miss those jobs at all. One with the state...holiday's were none stop day & night...& the other one with the largest builder in the state during the housing boom. Was their qualifying party plus ran their largest subdivision. Everything from supervising 15 superintendents to sales. I think I had 4hrs sleep at best with that job.
-
Love my 8 to 5 desk jockey job..... lol
Just kidding.... the stress factor is pretty high. I have 20 guys that can make me look real good or real bad.
-
I guess I can’t complain too much about those tough jobs especially that last one. Set us up so that all major investments are free & clear, including house & what real-estate we have. Now I’m more selective with jobs I take on. If the money isn’t there I walk. If it’s there I’m all in with the same intensity/drive. On the flip side the amount of Contractors that lost everything during that incredible surge far outweighed the good.

Another gem...rare pea-shooter. :o

NICE!!!
Just curious. Are you finding these, or are they finding you?? :D

Guilty as charged on both counts. ;)
Can't stay away from those Benji auctions.

Ever consider Sheridan's?
-
Oh ya! Just trying to finish up with the first collection.
-
That consignment shop I go to has some Sheridans. Didn't think about it the last time I was there. I'll check and see what they have next time.
Anything in particular to look for?

Put the word RARE on it and there ya go.
Another thing I forgot to mention is the ridiculous shipping charges. You know these guys are tricking you thinking you won't notice.....until it's too late that is.
For example this, from just this morning:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/303090780606?ul_noapp=true (https://www.ebay.com/itm/303090780606?ul_noapp=true)
The shipping cost depends on destination. They're in MI. To me (GA/east coast), shipping would have been $11.60. This is set up when the listing is being drafted by the seller- choosing "calculate shipping" as they did (as opposed to free shipping or "same cost for all buyers") allows eBay's software to set the shipping cost. Generally the actual shipping cost is a little less if the seller buys an ebay shipping label, but it's not a windfall by any stretch.

I didn't know that Mark. Every time I've seen the shipping costs exorbitantly high I thought it was the seller trying gouge the buyer hoping they would overlook it.
Thanks for clarifying.

Two in one day. Got a problem with the gun shooting just a bit outside? Whack off the muzzle & manufacture your own sight.
Amazing how this seller has managed to hang on to his 100% rating. ???

Sad thing is.... some poor fool will buy both.
Then complain that he got a bad deal.
-
Yep. 1 bidder. Almost 30 bucks.
Cracked receiver to boot. Who knows what else lurks inside? Not even a halfway decent parts gun.
Marty - Got your PM BTW. ;)

I guess that's how they do things there in Toledo, Illinois.

Your quite welcome. But to clarify, that's not to say there aren't ebay sellers who are making a huge profit from marking up shipping! It's just in that particular case I have had dealings with the seller so I was aware of the way the shipping from them was being calculated. So you are right to keep a sharp eye on shipping charges.
