Under The Hood Of The Crosman Venom .177 Gas Ram - The Skinny on this Baby

Some views and thoughts on the new Crosman Venom .177 Gas Ram sold exclusively from Sportsmans Guide.


First off when I took her out of the double plain brown boxes I noticed nothing unusual or wrong. As my visual inspection became more intense I noticed that the metal work was not the same quality as the NP Trails I have tuned and owned. I could see fine machine marks around the Weaver mount on the action. Outside of that nothing else was unusual to visual inspection.

Next was to clean barrel and run her accross chrony. With 7.9 gn JSB Exacts the initial fps was 1227 fps. after about 30 shots she was in the low 1000 fps range. These numbers told me there was still lube in front of the seal. Possibly a bad seal sucking oil up into combustion chamber. The only way to find out was to pull her down.

On further inspection after tearing down the Venom I did not notice any other issues. Looks exactly the same as the NP Trial .22's inside. Quick measurments gave me the information I was looking for.

The seal was in very bad shape. That is why there were such high numbers on the chrony. Seal was torn and cut half way around it.

My initial impression of the Crosman Venom is that the metal work is not as nice as the NP Trail's finish but look at the price difference. $229.00 for NP Trail plus shipping compared to the Venom at $170.00 plus shipping from SportsmansGuide. If finish is not a big issue with you then that would be a good deal IMO.

The stock is a good solid synthetic stock. Trigger felt hard and needs a GRT-III installed to make her perfect...:)

Over all if you are looking to buy a new Gas Ram barrel breaker the Crosman Venom would be a great option.

Thanks Gene for the info. I'm about ready to hit the order buttontoo. I use my guns strictly for hunting Cathas me spoiled. If I could get 30 yard accuracy with the Venon, I'd have one in a heartbeat. Need a new toy. Have a Walther Talon .22 that dumps squirrels at 50+ yds with no problem. I don't like to carry it in the woods-too heavy. I'm 66 and holding=need a lighter gun like the Big Cat. I love Crosman technology, but the crazy stocks and the weight of their quality guns holds me back.

Any one of the the new gas rams will be sufficient at 30 to 40 yards for small game. With exception of the Benji Trail XL's and they are heavy but shoot way out there...:)
