It's funny though, on my desk also sits an old Dell desktop with Windows XP. I had to power it up the other week because my wife had some files on it still, and it was a nice memory of how simple XP was (is).

I'll second this. I don't feel like the windows experience has really improved since XP, just now it supports faster hardware, and the bloatware / bandwidth wasting online services that most can't live without today.
@Baco Ok, you've got me there on the power savings of a mini over most any type of desktop -- I remember setting up a video server from an abandoned P5 about 25 years ago -- unfortunately no one else in the household appreciated video streaming so it just sat there idling, eating kilowatts.

I am in the RPI camp with my printers. Two filament printers with PIs running and a decent machine I use for everything else. Files are processed and sent to them over my network. I specifically isolated them into their own V-Lan and restricted any internet traffic to and from them. This has been serving me well. My use for a Mini PC is to use it as a dedicated firewall, gateway, and router. I am using one of the Protectli Vault Pro which might be a bit more than anyone running a printer, slicer, and light CAD might need.
just my thoughts and uses thus far but enjoying the discussion. It's been a bit since I tagged in, but I have the printers now and I'm slowly learning the 3D CAD stuff.
