Air Venturi AV-46M Review
Offhand:
Thank you for your excellent summary of this fine pistol's operation and attributes.
I've put many many thousands of pellets through my IZH 46M and it has, as you suggest, been a delight to shoot and completely reliable -- and far more accurate than I can ever hope to be.
Here are a few additional thoughts about the pistol, that I've learned from experience and from some kind and knowledgeable people on this forum and others, that might be useful. I am by no means an expert and I'm sure some of the other folks on here who have these great pistols will correct me if they disagree.
1. The throats on some of these pistols (like mine) is quite tight. If so, you might find it helpful to seat the pellet a few millimeters deeper in the throat than your fingers alone can accomplish. With my pistol, using a homemade pellet-seater in this manner increases muzzle fps with alloy pellets (which are harder than lead) from 480 to 530 fps.
2. The pistol should be stored with the cocking lever unlatched (but not cocked) to protect the seals.
3. I was advised by an experienced user on another forum that some folks have had trouble with long-term durability of the lever that pumps air into the chamber and also, at full extension, cocks the gun. He suggested to ease the strain on it by cocking the gun by hand before pumping it (exactly as if dry-firing it).
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts about your pistol.

Thank you for the kind words and comments! I did forget to mention the detail about storing the pistol with the breech block out of lock to avoid compressing the seals. I've also seen that it's recommended to put a drop of Pellgunoil in the piston every 500 rounds or so. I hadn't seen the one about seating the pellet deeper to increase the velocity. Also the one about cocking the breech block separately is new to me; have you seen any reports of users breaking their pistols by cocking them in one stroke? I've been treating that linkage carefully but perhaps I should add that step just in case.
Frank in Fairfield:
The latest trend is to keep the pistol cocked to keep pressure on the seals like we do with the Benjamin pumpers.
Keeping the bolt unlatched is good too as recommended by all.
Note: Just about every person who bought one the AV46 had to send them back to Air Venturi for power adjustment.
My partner in Kansas (he has a IZH46M too, included.
Mine was used to me about 5 years ago (I had two others that someone else wanted).
Since coming to me about 6,000 rounds.
We shoot 10M and air pistol silly wet air pistol at Diablo (Concord, CA).

Chris,
As you enjoy your 46M so much, perhaps seeing an analysis of its mechanism might amuse you: https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=153475.0
If needed or wanted to take it apart to change the piston seal; see: https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=153388.msg155687765#msg155687765
Or wanted to adjust the compression (power):

Very late reply, but thank you for those links! I will definitely be using them as a reference.
