Marvel Mystery Oil ?
«
on:
March 13, 2019, 02:38:29 AM »
I have been using 30wt non detergent in my Daisy 880 guns and Mac1 Secret Sauce in my Benjamin 392. Was wondering if anybody uses Marvel Mystery Oil in their pump guns. It is suppose to be very good for rubber seals I think. Would like to hear from someone that has used it !, Is it thicker than Secret Sauce or 30 wt Non Detergent ?
Just curious ?

I don't really know what it is. It is thinner than 30 weight. I mix an ounce per gallon of non alcohol gasoline for my small engines - like lawn equipment. The idea is (hopefully) to lubricate the top end - valves, etc. Does it affect seals - haven't a clue.

Apparently it's made from petrol distillates. At least that what I gather from the SD sheet.

MMO is considerably lower viscosity than 30 weight motor oil, close to AT fluid in that respect. IIRC, it smells like 3-in-1 oil. I have had it free a sticking hydraulic valve lifter when adding 1/2 quart to the crankcase.
As to air guns, I do not have an opinion.

I use it in my air tools , and now they offer MMO in an air tool version. but I'm against trying it in my pump guns.

I don't think I would use it for airguns, especially those with rubber or leather. Supposedly it has distillates similar to, if not actually, kerosene in it. I use it to wipe down my lathe/mill to keep rust off and know for a fact it has some sort of solvent or detergent in it because it removes grime.
Incidentally, I purchased it for my truck but then researched and discovered it is not recommended for modern engines because it can degrade seals. That's how it found its way to my machinery, where research said it's good for rust prevention. I'm referring to the
original
MMO.

I’ve used it in my air tools for 15yrs and never had a problem. I used MMO on a 880 my brother in law had, it got it pumping again.

I do... in my CO2 and Pumpers. I do NOT use in in PCP. It's thinner than ND30, Pellgun oil, or ATF.
But I have no "long term" results in airguns, only about 3 years.
That said, I have used MMO for nearly 20 years daily in my air tools back in my Auto Tech days. Never attacked o-rings, just the opposite, it kept those working great.
In an airgun application, I use it my old pumper / CO2 restores. I'll do the Alcohol flush, then chase it out with MMO. Alcohol not only dries things out, it absorbs moisture, so I want it out of there.
If an old gun needs disassembled, I clean the parts with it. It cuts the crud and leaves a protective film. Then for assembly fluid to lube the seals so they don't get nicked or cut.
From then on, I use Pellgun oil (which also has mixed reviews).
