Title: Heavy pellets in a 392
Post by: 35 shooter on February 04, 2019, 09:05:03 PM
Usually I find a lot of what i’m Looking for with the search feature, but tonight I came up empty.

Does anybody have any chrono info for a Benjamin 392 with 20 gr. Pellets?

I bought a sample pack of gamo pellets a while back, and the magnums and ts22’s are extremely accurate in mine.
The ts22’s weigh 21.75 gr. According to the tin they came in.

Hope to have another chrono before too long, but in the meantime, I had a gas check from a cast bullet come off and dead center my read out lol.

No chrony info, but I regularly shoot 28g Eun Jins out on my Benjamin 342. I got the idea from Tim McMurray when he wrote about "heavy & slow" referring to the slower velocity but higher FPE because of the heavier pellet.
No reason you couldn't shoot heavy pellets with your rifle too.
Get yourself some Lexan for the front of your chrony.

#1 on the lexan cover lol. First time i’ve Ever had that happen, but it was dead center lol.

FPE is what I was curious about and of course the FPS to calculate the best sight in distance.
I did find some info on the net for the 28 gr. Eunjin in the 392...8 pumps 510 FPS.
I don’t know the bc at that speed for that pellet, but guessing at 15 to 16 fpe at least?

I was considering ordering one of the 22 cal. Pellet moulds from noe... the 17 gr. Wadcutter, but may change my mind and go ahead and get the 20 gr. Hunter mould now, based on how it’s shooting these near 22 gr. Ts22 gamos.

Why are you wanting such a heavy pellet? Your fps suffers exponentially, consequentually so to does accuarcy (obviously). I can see heavier on a 900fps/> gun but not for a 392.

JSB's 18.13gr give me 645fps/13.1fpe & are extremely accurate out to 40+ yards with my vintage 392's. There not the cheapest around but if you buy 2 or 3 here you get one free.

Hey, you're in the "I shot my chrony" club now. Years ago I got new F1 Shooting Chrony. One the very first shot I clipped the top of the display. If that wasn't bad enough, on the second shot I finished the job. Right dead center of the display. Duh!  ::)
I traded the F1 in on an Alpha Master with remote display. I put 3/4" of Polycarbonate on the front of the chrony just to make sure I never shoot it again. So far, I haven't in the last five years. (knock wood)  ;)

The BC on the 28g Eun Jin is around .035 if I remember right. At 510FPS, that's 16.18FPE. I have most of my pumpers sighted in at 27yds, which just happens to be the depth of my backyard.

How do you guys shoot your chronos? I've never set my chrono more than 1 foot away from the muzzle. If I hit it at that distance I suppose I should give up on accuracy from any of my guns.

Marty, MSPs like PCPs are more air efficient with heavier ammo. Obviously, like all ammo, use what your particular rifle shoots accurately. I was going to suggest to Buddy that he try the 18g JSBs because of their reputation of being one of, if not the most versatile .22 pellet out there for accuracy.

In my case, being a bonehead!   :o

Forgetting to compensate for the height of the scope over the barrel & I was set up at 5ft from muzzle.

LOL... I hear ya...
When I chrono a gun I'm not looking for accuracy. I don't even look down the scope. I set the chrono close and fire the gun across it in a safe direction.... usually at the ground maybe 5 feet in front of me. This requires the chrono to be set at an angle on the tripod. I have the ProChono Digital with the usb connection to my laptop.
..... Heavy pellets will shoot slower but deliver a greater impact. They will also shorten your range and will require more strokes in a pumper. I prefer a 14.3 gr accurate pellet that my gun likes and around 5 pumps to get the job done.

I agree Dave. Getting up there past 18g doesn't really serve any purpose in a 392. Even the CHPH's shoot pretty good in my oldies & talk about delivering a punch?!

Hasn't happened yet. Emphasis on "yet". ;)

Yes sir,

I have officially joined the club lol. I used to laugh and shake my head when I read of someone accidentally shooting their chrono.
I never considered a gas check coming loose and doing the same thing.
The cast bullet still hit where it should have at The 100 yd. mark, so I was momentarily puzzled as to why my screen was dark on the f1 chrono 10 ft. Downrange.
At 2200 FPS., that gascheck did a number on the f1 for sure.
Strange, but for some reason it was’nt quite as funny when it happened to me, as when I read about it happening to others? :o lol.

Thanks for the bc info. I think I may well order that 20 gr. Mould... I can always add a bit of tin or try a 50/50 mix on the lead to lighten things up a bit if I need to.

I tried the heavy weights because I had a few on hand just to see how the accuracy was.
That particular ts22 pellet absolutely drives nails at 20 and 25 yds. from MY 392, despite my 5 lb. trigger pull.(gotta do something about that)
It does hit about an inch lower than my 16 gr. pellets at 20 yds. When sighted in for the 16 gr.

The reason behind me trying these, is that noe 22 cal. Dome shaped moulds start at 20 gr.
The only thing lighter is their wadcutter at 17 gr.
Actually, i’ll Probably wind up with both versions before it’s over.
I enjoy casting and have a ton of lead on hand and like the idea of not being dependent on the market place for my ammo, though 22 pellets are cheap enough.

There are different ways to mix your lead hardness and content to get a lighter pellet from the same moulds if need be.
It’s just a different aspect of the airgunning hobby that i’m Sure l will enjoy tinkering with, just as I do with cast bullets in my powder burners.

Btw, most of my lead supply was free, so lots of shooting for just a bit of time and work! ;)

Would’nt be very prudent to set a chrono a foot away from a .308 win. Or 35 whelen when shooting loads at 2200 to 2600 FPS. Lol. Muzzle blast would make short work of it.

I intend to do just as you suggest for my Airguns though.
I was shooting my .308 win. when the gas check hit the chrono.
Was’nt the bullet lol, but did just as good a job on the chrono as if it had been! :o

LOL, LOL ... My 35 Whelen kicks like a mule, have two of them, both the older style Ruger 77's They kick almost as bad as my Marlin 4570's shooting 425gr Leadheads at 1750 fps !!!!

Will,

Yep, the whelen can mangle on both ends.

Lol, when I shoot deer with mine, I figure whoever gets back up first wins!

Well.... just got through shooting 4 5 shot groups with the ts22’s @ 21.75 gr. @ 20 yds. On my indoor range.(down the hall and through the den)
Using a cheap Barska 3x9 non parallax adj. set at 6 power, and with a 5 lb. trigger from my bench, the biggest group I got was a 3/8” dia. round hole.

Both 16 and 18gr. Jsb pellets shoot at least as well, so yeah... think i’ll take a chance on the noe pellet mould.
As I said before, I should be able to mix an alloy for less weight than 20 gr. If need be.

Also thinking about one of the new synthetic stocked 392’s to go with it. Should be a fun year!! :D

Shot the 392 at 50 yds. at a friends house today from a card table set up on his range, as I was too lazy to pack my portable shooting bench with me.
In the past i’ve Found I can cut my groups almost in half shooting from my bench vs. his card table, so I was pretty satisfied with the results for now.
Next time I “will” take my shooting bench.

Had a 2 to 3 mph. Crosswind constantly blowing and a solid grey sky.
5 shots with a “known” for accuracy pellet(15.42 gr. gamo dome)in my rifle went into a
1 1/4” vertical by 3/4” wide group.@50 yds.
I’m usually in the .5 to .6” range on a calm day
With that pellet at 50 yds. From MY bench.

Next was the 21.75 gr. Ts22 gamo’s. 5 went into 1” vertical by 5/8” wide group, so it bucked the crosswind better than the lighter domes.
I was a bit surprised to find perfect round holes in the backing, so they’re stable from the 392.
Another 5 shots with the 21.75 gr. went .9”” vertical by.6” wide in almost a carbon copy of the first group.
I think my 392 likes these heavies just fine.

I know I can cut those groups from my portable bench rest, so now i’m really encouraged about trying the 20gr. Noe mould.
Other things are more important than the mould right now, but i’ll report on it’s accuracy when I do get it.

I was sighted in 1/2” high at 20 yds. With the 15.42 gr. Pellets and the 21.75’s were hitting an inch under that, so a half inch low of center at 20 yds.
At 50 yds., the 21.75’s hit about 3” lower than the 15.42 gr. Pellets.
When the heavy’s are sighted in 1/2” high at 20 yds., that extra drop should be cut substantially? We’ll see.
