Here’s a short range that I set up for my nephews this past Thanksgiving. It’s only about 20 yards at the longest spot but it was fun with the springers.

Well big bores and slugs are probably best left for an actual gun range if they allow.

Well big bores and slugs are probably best left for an actual gun range if they allow. Hello Mike, Yes I agree slugs , bullets and big bores are best left for the range. I often have commented on the posting of the term "backyard friendly" that is over used cliche that is going to cause trouble to our community one day. I shoot pellets with my .25 Maurader and full auto, bb guns at our Norco family home, but that is really pushing the limits of responsibility. The sad fact is that most municipalities and many counties in So Cal consider air rifles and bb guns the same as discharging a firearms. The house in Norco is only 1 mile across the Santa Ana River from Rahaugges shooting range. That is where I have to go and shoot my .257 I have to go on week days when it isn't so busy and I used to be able stretch things out beyond a bit over 100 yards. When Chris Rahaugge was there , I could shoot after hours, but I don't have it like that anymore. It is funny gearing up for a day at the range with powder burners. They think you are an idiot checking in with an air rifle. But once you get set up and are slinging lead and shooting 1/2 m.o.a. at 100 yrd small bore targets and you have all the gear with compressor, tanks and a chrony, people will eventual get curious. I live near DT Riverside in my wife's house and I can't even set up a .177 pellet range in the driveway into the garage because too many neighbors.... Has anyone ever tried to get zoning to build their own private residential range? I think you have to get approval from the Sheriff first and then the city council has to approve a variance before the building dept will issue a permit. Plans have to be certified by a engineer and meet same specification as any other shooting range regardless if it's powder burner or air rifle. That is really the only legal way to be backyard friendly. Even a slingshot is against the law to fire in most places! BLM land is the only safe place to shoot and be worry free of local ordanace and unsympathetic or clueless local law enforcement. Despite the popular belief that our airguns are Red Ryder innocent, the trend with bigbore and high BC bullets is going to get unwanted attention someday. We need to organize and promote a positive image. The fact that many people publicly find airguns less threatening, there is still time to promote ourselves. We can create and publicize airgun fun shoots and informal competition events for public participation. Sponsor scouting activities or even approach public parks and recreation for opportunity. Our activity should be as acceptable as archery and could utilize areas in the public domain to enjoy ourselves. It's difficult shooting in the powder burner domain. Airguns need accessible public spaces. We need exception to the same discharge rules as firearms. If we put the proper spin on it, we might actual pitch this as a solution to those within the gun control crowd and have them lobby for more generous places to practice our "backyard friendly" shooting activities?!?@??? I dunno pipe dream I suppose. But man if you were ever to actually fact check how difficult it is to LEGALLY shoot an air rifle in SoCal ..... it's kinda scary! Be safe friends and stay outta trouble!!!!!
