1st a little background. after moving to the inner banks of North Carolina last year, i started hunting in the Croatan national forest. between the drive and the ferry, it takes about an hour to reach the area of this vast forest i was hunting. i went at least twice a week mid october through february and never saw a squirrel. this year i found a game land 30 minutes from home and started hunting there. after a dozen or so trips i was discouraged as again no squirrels. then 3 weeks ago i noticed the game lands extended across the street. i studied google earth and found areas of deciduous trees. my 1st trip there i spotted 2 squirrels. on the 2nd trip i spotted 3 squirrels and harvested 1. since then i have found an area of oaks with acorn shells on almost every fallen tree. so now i look for areas with fallen trees and set up there. this morning i was in a newly discovered area and within minutes spotted my 1st squirrel. of course it was dashing about not offering me a shot. how rude. finally squirrel #7 appeared about 19 yards out on what else, a fallen tree. i found the squirrel in my scope and waited for it to move as it's head was behind some leaves. it must have spotted me as it froze for some time. i decided on a heart/lung shot and let the H&N Hunter loose. without hearing the usual "pock", or the rustling of leaves, i figured i missed and sat awhile. soon another squirrel appeared to my right and i took aim. alas it was too quick for me and bounded off before i could settle on it. 10 minutes later another squirrel off in the distance started barking so i thought i'd head that way. as i moved i remembered not only did i not hear the squirrel i shot at run off, but i didn't hear the pellet strike any of the many downed trees behind it. i looked around the area but didn't see blood. then, 9 or 10' away there it was. blood around it's left shoulder, face, and a small amount where the pellet exited on the right. time: 8:05am. temp: 58*. sky: overcast.
the day proceeded the same until 11:44am when i spotted another squirrel 42 yards out eating while perched on a fallen tree. i watched as it would pick up an acorn, climb on the tree, and eat the nut. the only shot it presented was a rear quarter so i kept it in my sights hoping sooner or later it would sit in an area allowing a clear shot. finally after a long wait it did. i squeezed off the shot, heard it hit a tree with authority. hmmm. the squirrel was looking at the tree below it. i squeezed off a second shot and once again heard it strike wood. now the squirrel jumped on a standing tree. another shot, another miss. the squirrel climbed up the tree and then back down in the classic head down pose. i zoomed from 6x to 15x and took a 4th shot. without striking anything the squirrel finally learned the lesson i was giving it and scampered off. frustrated, i inspected the tree and found the 2 hits from the pellet below where the squirrel sat. i looked my Regal XL over and discovered the elevation turret was not at zero. (50 yards is zero) then i remembered i was shooting expired cherry tomatoes this past sunday and forgot to return the zero. i rotated the turret back to zero, placed 2 acorns on the fallen tree and returned to my gun. 2 shots, 2 dead acorns. live and learn. by now it's just after noon and the temp has risen to 73*. i was hot and the squirrel i shot needed processing. i returned home, took care of the squirrel and my equipment and went fishing in the kayak.
no fish were caught or seen, but that is for another forum.
look close and you can see where the pellet entered on the left. the 2nd pic shows the exit wound.
