My R1 has barely enough thread to come tight. Still seems a little odd the bolt is too long because I've never run into this on any other 30mm tube gun I've worked on. Is the bolt not tightening up because running out of threads to go into the right side fork? Or the round nut bottoming out on the bolt threads before coming tight? That bolt should have the thicker square wire lock washer on both sides. If they accidentally used the thinner round wire lock washer on either side that could cause the problem.
Good to hear, Kirk! The HW80 is easily the most-bashed HW out there. I haven't shot one, but I'm pretty sure I would have no problems with the "terrible 30 mm bore" etc. etc. It is among the most classic classics, and not just because people didn't have anything better in the 1980's.

Tightening the bolt (completely) from the left side doesn't secure the barrel firmly enough for me, with it's threaded end seemingly sticking too far for the cap nut to apply pressure to the fork.So either the bolt isn't threaded long enough (highly doubt) to go into the right fork or the bolt is too long to get any pressure from the cap nut - or a combo of the two.I haven't yet looked into it but will soon enough as the barrel dropping down bugs me.
Sounds like a winner Kirk, IMO that rifle is better suited for the 10gn weight pellets in .177cal, 860fps is good power, I'm glad your liking the new rifle! .
Yeah, unlike most magnum springers, the venerable HW80 makes a good platform for a .177 cal.
