The snobbery exists on all forums. Even this one. But you are correct, pm may be the worst.

Sounds like you have a good source of information you can lean on there.

Something to keep in mind, a 1hp motor will do everything a hobbyist might ever want to do. The 3hp is a beast and a Bridgeport can make some CRAZY cuts with it.

After reading about the single phase to 3 phase conversion on VFDs I have to admit I wasn't aware of the single phase to 3 phase conversion capability.  That is the way I would go too.  What I like is the capability of variable speed control on AC with out using some type of PIV.
