T01 Trigger Won't Latch
«

I just replaced the mainspring in a Ruger Air Hawk.
I did not disassemble the T01 trigger...
The critter refuses to latch...
I did the reset trigger pull
Thinking that the new spring may be too long and coil binding, I tried the original spring
Hope
Thinking that the flange on my new spring guide was too thick, I compared to the original.
Dead nuts identical.
Thinking that the new spring guide was too long, I trimmed off a bit.
Nosiree......
The piston does travel far enough to engage the safety.
Just won't latch...
I got no more thinking left...........
Guidance, please............
Only good thing is that my new home built spring compressor works well..

You should have a T05 trigger, not a T01. The thing about a T05... make sure it's uncocked on reassembly or the piston won't latch (squeeze the trigger).

I guess it is a T05
I reset the trigger. nope.
Unless I ain't squeezing it far enough.
It given an audible click...but it won't cock.

Remove the trigger assembly and piston from the gun. Press the latching rod into the trigger assembly after flipping the safety off and pulling the trigger. It's a pretty hard push as you must overcome the spring in the trigger assembly. It either will or it will not latch. Note, you must use a T05 piston with your T05 trigger. If it latches you can pull the trigger to release the piston. Try assembling the gun without the spring and go through the cocking and firing thing again. You want to fing out if something is shortening the compression tube inside or confirming your spring guide is not too long. Measure the diameter of the spring wire. Multiply by the number of turns. Compare that length to the depth of the inside of the piston. It should not exceed about ninety percent of the piston depth - ninety five percent absolute max. That will tell if you have coil binding. Is any of the original piston sleeve still remaining inside the piston? How about pieces of an old broken spring, washers, top hat, or whatever?

I did the math on both the spring itself and the guide before I assembled it, and all checked out fine.
I will do the latching tests as you outlined.
I cannot understand the mechanics of how this system works.
The sear moves vertically, and its at-rest position is upward, I think.
The beveled snout on the piston latch rod must move the rod down in order for the rod to pass thru the sear.
Then the sear moves UP to latch??
What moves it DOWN to release??
Does the trigger mechanism drop the bottom ramp from under the sear and the piston moves the sear down to release??
I will go play with it a while.........

Well...FINALLY.............
After going thru the procedure that Mr. Thomas recommended, I was still befuddled.
It would latch with out the spring and guide (no sleeve) but would STILL not latch
with all the stuff installed.
One of the parts was a thin washer, which I thought had to go in the piston so that the spring didn't wear directly on the piston.
Problem is...it didn't fit into the piston....diameter too large.
So, I rationalized that it had to go between the spring guide flange and the spring....
I guess not..........
Apparently that was keeping the piston from travelling far enough for the trigger to latch.....
Working now, but it requires a pretty good little tug at the end of the cocking stroke in order to get it to latch.
We'll see if that doesn't improve with a few hundred or thousand cycles......
This was a rifle that I purchased as a "new, opened box" item that would not shoot a pellet...
Good strong shooter now with no twang!
Have not run across the chrony as yet.
One last thought, I DID get a large amount of experience disassembling and re-assembling a Model 34 clone..
And the home made spring compressor worked loke a tool !
