I see the AAFTA's regs limit pistols to 12fpe at a max of 30yrds, and 12x max magnification. Are there any other factors that should be considered when pistol shopping?
What are the "no holds barred" guys shooting these days?
-
Maximum Barrel length is 15", including any and all attachments.
The complete set of AAFTA rules are here... http://www.aafta.org/Assets/handbook/2013/AAFTA_Handbook_2013.pdf (http://www.aafta.org/Assets/handbook/2013/AAFTA_Handbook_2013.pdf)

Does a stock Crosman 1720T with a Hawke Varmint 3-12X44mm scope qualify?

So, I think the Crosman 1701P would be perfect....Or the Crosman .177 copy of the PRod (without stock, of course).
-
Believe Jim Stanis won that match that year with his "gangsta" theoben pistol.
That is a very interesting gun... this discipline is so full of intriguing options. I'm just trying to wrap my feeble mind around dimes @50 with a pistol. You can't just buy your way into that. 8)

Yes, it would. The two guys who tied for 1st at this year's GOB match in Tennessee each shot Crosman 1720Ts.

Here is my new Hunter PFT rig... A CZ200S rifle, converted to 12fpe pistol. Barrel shortened to under 15". Pardini match pistol grip, custom S200 fore stock, Weaver Kaspa 3-12x 44mm scope with Tactical Ballistic-X reticle and UTG sidewheel.

I believe it !! Gun shoots fantastic. Shooter SHAKES TOO MUCH free hold. But give me a tree or rest ;).

Well I am practicing !! Love my pistol, but if I could only hold it rock steady. Are you allowed to focus? The half mil-dot scope is real accurate for yards to target at max power 12x. I am getting much better at guessing wind and over shooting up to 50 yards.

Of course you can focus! You just can't click for elevation. Practice your hold-over/under, instead.

Thanks. Imagine that fore stock without the engraving and it would look butt-ugly. Luckily, I found some artwork that would look attractive and also provide a panel with good grip, like cut checkering.

Okay, I've looked thru here and saw all the cool as heck pistols, but where do I find rules and regulations? I checked out as much of the site as I could figure out, but I can't find out where to find the rules for field target? I would like to try at least shooting within the rules. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Thank you very much! Now I know my crosman custom 2300 can be shot at one of these events. Now I just have to find one close to me.

Will a 1701P with a PROD air tube work? My 1701P should be here any day. I am fair with a rifle, but a pistol is very different.
-
Jesse,
Best answer is maybe.
I shoot Hunter FT to ranges of 55 yards.
I guess pistol is at only 30 yards.
I think the best we can hope for from our 1701P is 4 ft lbs.
I think something like the 1720T would be better, approaching 12 ft lbs.
Our 1701P pistols are perfect for what they were intended.
Silhouette less than 18 yards.
IMHO

It really does not matter. I shoot because I enjoy it. This will be my 10 to 30 yard pistol, and learning is the fun part.
-
I'm testing my 1701P tomorrow with plastic 1/8 inch I.D. tubing to replace the transfer port. Results posted thereafter.
-
Try to find a shoot near you and go check it out. Thats the best way to get information from the club you will be shooting with most often.
I've seen people shoot the Alecto, daisy 7?7, and all kinds of pcp and semi-custom pistols. Have to agree with Frank and DFW, hard to beat the crosman pistols for an out-of the-box shooter, especially for hunter FT where you get to sit down and rest on a bipod. I did ok with the Prod in .22 cal and a Hawke sidewinder tactical scope. Great gun to keep around for non-FT shooting too.
-
Thanks for the inof on this guys!
I was thinking a Beeman P1 would work but wasn't sure what would be better. Kind of clear now.

I bought my 1701P used, it had the transfer port drilled for 12fpe FT use. Since the closest FT match to me is across two states, I installed an OEM transfer port and tuned it for efficiency. It only takes a few minutes to change the port, and shot count now rivals my 2300S.

The silhouette 1701 could double as a PFT gun without an issue. even if it was shooting 450 fps with 7.9 gr pellets it will still be pushing 2.6 fpe at 30 yards which should be plenty to knock down a target at that range. I would recommend uping the power just a bit within the stock parts limitation (about 500 fps with a 8 gr should be possible, if a bit more that would be great.) and then try... you should do just fine. And yes, it is a game that also a 2300 or 22xx can play at. My 2240 custom shoots .22 at 540 fps... it will get there with no issues. But a 2300S or T at 550 in .177 will probably be better.

As I type this I am reading the AAFTA handbook and it states that the match is from 10-35 yds. KZs 0.5 to 2" diameter. I quote " AAFTA requires only one class for an AAFTA sanctioned match. Howeve,r match directors may offer additional classes if the number of shooters warrrant it" In their open class you can click as well as other rules as I read it.
If a hunter class is set, then no clicking and the normal rifle hunter class for rifle rules apply. (Bi pods ,etc) Hands only class is even more restrictive.
The hand book with all the rules can be downloaded at the AAFTA web site. I think that www.aafta.com (http://www.aafta.com) will get you there.

What a difference a couple months makes...
Here are the new, 2016 rules as of this date (Dec.1). These should be good to go for all of 2016, as the AFTA 2016 season has officially begun.
Posting here now because there are some significant changes in Pistol if you decide to modify a rifle to the 15" maximum allowed... http://aafta.org/Assets/handbook/2016/AAFTA_Handbook_2016.pdf (http://aafta.org/Assets/handbook/2016/AAFTA_Handbook_2016.pdf)
