Title: Set Up My New Crosman F4 :-)
Post by: wll2506 on November 18, 2022, 06:57:41 PM
Got my Crosman F4 and set it up.

1st thing I did after shooting it about 10 times, was to take the stock off and remove the bear trap - it came off pretty easily. I then gave about 4 twist on the trigger spring set screw as a trigger was really, really long and very hard to pull. This made it much better but it's still too long - more adjustment is needed.

Next thing I did was was to install the incredibly poor quality, plastic housed, lens flairing packaged Center Point scope. I used a set of mounts I already had because the mounts that came with this scope were absolutely cheap pieces of "Fudge" and were worse than the quality of this scope. I wish this gun would not have come with this scope and mount combo so I could have saved .50 ! (This is not a knock on Center Point scopes in general, I have quite a few and many of them are very, very good).

After this was done I sat down and fired about 12 shots using 10.5gr CPUM's, yes she did pretty well. The firing sequence of the gun is very nice, there's no twang, it's just a very quick solid shot sequence, no after movement or noise --- Nothing ! -- I was very pleased.

The F4 handles very well, unlike my Winchester 1100SS which is not handy, very heavy -- although it is slightly lighter, less bulky than my old Chevy truck :-)

This Crosman F4 is nice to carry and feels good in the hand - Crosman did a nice job.

Another note  -- THIS GUN IS NOT 43.5" LONG, it is ~47" in length --- Glad I waited before I bought a soft case.

Looking forward to doing some more testing tomorrow, I'll be chronographing the gun with these CPUM 10.5gr pellets and seeing how she does. I will check to see if I have any trigger set screws that I can use that are longer than the one that's in the gun so I could possibly lighten the trigger pull even more.

Later

I ordered some m3x10mm screws with allen wrench heads. Took the trigger guard off and replaced the old screw for the new one. With the gun cocked and loaded, laid it across my lap upside down pointed down range and screwed the screw in till the gun fired then backed it out 1 1/2 turns. The sear would not catch so I backed it out another 1/2 turn. The searsear caught, bum tested it. Result was a short first stage and 1.5 lbs trigger if memory serves.

Then I ordered a RC roller bearing, 5x8x2.5mm. That gave me no first stage and a trigger pull of 12-14oz. Takes about 5 min. Check out YouTube to see how to do it. Easy stuff.

Take to gun out of the stock.
Remove the E-clip on the right side of the trigger.
Push the pin out and remove the trigger.
Push the pin out holds the trigger spring. Store the pin and spring away.
Remove the trigger adjustment screw. Store it away.
Remove the pin that slides up and down in the slot on the left side of the trigger housing.
Place the roller bearing inside the trigger and replace the pin through the trigger and roller bearing.
Install the trigger, trigger pin and E-clip.
Put the gun back in the stock.

??? Isn't that air rifle powered by a nitro piston anyway? If ever you hear a spring noise coming from it that means there's something VERY wrong with your gun.

Anyways glad you like it, the B18/19-platform Crosman guns are usually pretty good and reliable performers. I have 5 rifles based on that platform, they all have good barrels and good overall quality. My two NP rifles (Benji Trail NP in .22 and Crosman TR77NPS) have a similar shot cycle to what you described, very pleasant!

BTW the trigger will benefit from a longer adjustment screw (+3 mm), and a good polishing job on the contact surfaces. Moly or tungsten lube do wonders in these. Just make sure you ''bump-test'' the gun after trigger work.

Enjoy!

P.S.: I suggest you also try Crosman 7.9 grains hollow point and domed pellets, they'll give less energy but are most often deadly accurate.

Worked on the trigger with a 3mmx10mm screw as was suggested by @lefteyeshot and now my second stage is set to a safe sear engagement, about 1/3 shorter than factory --- not match quality but doable. I have washers at work that I will use to greatly take out most of the slack on the first stage.

In the backyard shooting a few shots for a general sight in. I must say this stock is very nice, and the gun although very long (47") is nice and light - Would be a very easy carry in the field.

The F4 is a very powerful gun along with the fact that it is a barrel cocker makes this gun pretty finicky to shoot even though it is a gas piston and not a springer. My FX Chronograph has an attitude today so no readings for now.

Using CPUM's and they are shooting pretty darn hard. I have 7.9gr CPHP's also, but I just like a extra weight of the CPUM's. I bought a BUNCH of these when they came on sale a while ago. In some of my guns they must be sized, but they shoot very well in my powerfull 177 cal guns --- My Beeman Chief II Plus, Win 1100ss, this gun, , My Beeman 2027 pistol and so on !

I have a few piston guns -- Hatsan, Crosman Vantage, My Weihrauch 90's, and now this gun and I really like the firing behavior. I have 3 extra pistons in case things go bad, I may get a couple more gas pistons just in case for the Crosman guns. (The greatest feature of Crosman is getting spare parts to keep your gun running for years, my hats off to Crosman --- Gamo and Umarex are you listening).

Will be back tomorrow,  hope FX Chronograph is working :-)

My FX chronograph is working today and I'm averaging 785fps with CPUM,s, they are hitting hard.  Accuracy at my 19yd + range is pretty good but I'm still breaking her in -‐There's major hope for this light yet powerful rifle.

Will test a lot more later on this week when I have some major time !!

I may put a red dot on this gun as I'm not sure of how this scope is holding up to this guns snap !!

The longer screw will be okay for awhile but later the RC roller bearing mod I also mentioned is much better.

Shot a little bit Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning -- I got my roller bearing and it makes a big difference for that trigger, the trigger now is much much, much better.

Since I just started shooting this gun it took a little bit of breaking in, but the accuracy seems to be coming around to maybe a little bit over a 1/2 an inch at 20 yards. This when fully broken in it will be a good light field gun for ground squirrels and pigeons and the like to about the 35 yd range where she has 10fpe.

There is no comparison between shooting this gun compared to the Win 1000ss. The Win is an absolute tank, this gun is a refined shooter. The stock alone is way, way better.

I bought this gun Alternet Special for $55 rebuilt it shoots just great, as a matter of fact I have another one ordered !!

She is still shooting CPUM's in the ~785 fps ish range !

Shot a few more shots then went back to bed !

-  This "Cold" that is going around is really bad, all I do is cough and sneeze and my eyes are on fire along with my throat.

Later guys.
