The trick to get the brass retainer off is to get a hardened washer with a center hole ID the size of the shaft where the felt wiper sits and a bigger OD than the pump cup backing washer. Then cut a slot in the washer so it will slip over the ID of the shaft where the felt wiper is and adjust the jaws of a vice to fit the OD of the pump cup washer and use a flat nose punch smaller than the ID of the brass retainer and drive it off the shaft using a hammer.I have replaced several piston cups on the old crosmans and benjis and never split a brass retainer yet. Here's a pic of my 2240 breeched 1400 with a maximus 177 barrel. I have had it since 1968 when I got it as a birthday present.BD

I just started a build like it. It will be a 1377 on top of a 1400 thinking about a 24" barrel
Looks brand new!
