Texan .357 cal Bullet Weights?
«

Al Nelson of NOE has asked me to poll Air Force Texan owners regarding what they would like to see available for bullet moulds.... Please choose up to four weights from the above list, selecting the closest weight(s).... If you would like to add any comments about the "as cast" diameter, nose style, meplat size, base style, or other comments, we are open to suggestions.... I think he is primarily interested in what a "stock" Texan can use, not a highly modified one.... as they are often set up for existing bullets....

I'm going to say that in any big bore like the .357 my vote is for a HP and that would be for target or hunting shooting the same bullets so the shooter 'learns' to shoot that and does not switch back and forth leading to poor accuracy. Pick one and stick with it.
In the same air rifle the heavier bullets are going to shoot slower and I find that the weight of bullet that shoots 850 to 900 has the trajectory I "know" and shoot best - Note I am talking reasonable ranges of 130 yards or less with the zero in the 65 to 80 yard range. You can zero at any range but I care about the height above line of sight to zero and drop below line of sight after zero for practical shooting and realistic scope adjustments

Carl, what velocity are you getting with your 152 gr. HP in your Texan, and is it "stock" ?....

Hahaha, what is this 'stock' you speak of... I don't recognize the word!
Nope, mine got sent off to have the chamber modified before the first air fill.
Velocity vs accuracy - I'm still testing the new bullet and not much of that since it is hunting season. I did chrony a few 5 shot strings and starting at 3K got an average of 944.
Strangely enough, I noticed that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th shots always stack in a tight group and the 1st is off with the 5th always way off. Gun likes 2800 and 3/4 spring, 3 shot groups which is good enough for my hunting. I only shot on a 50 yard range so it will probably be January before I can do more with my .357 Texan, Pitbull and maybe the new FLEX and the new BBT .357.
Note that I am not hunting with the Texan this year, I'm using the Pitbull Mega.

So, Carl, you are getting about 300 FPE at 3000 psi?.... Are there any other mods besides the new chamber, that could in any way affect the velocity?....

Nope. I had pulled the valve spring which gives you another 45/50 FPS but put it back in before this testing.

Interesting that you are exceeding the AirForce claimed performance with that bullet weight by a fair margin.... I wonder if proper bullet fit is the reason?.... It would seem that around 150 gr. is pretty good in the .357 Texan....

I would not say "by a fair margin", I expected 910/920 based on shooting the cast 140gr Lee SWC and the 158gr Hornady LRN so a little higher.
You would think AF numbers would be consistantly exaggerated like most mfg and real performance would be less but they seem to just be ballpark numbers and not representative of real guns.
And it might be that the difference is that I had a gunsmith run a Weatherby throat reamer in 0.100 from touching too.
Update: Sorry, I just remembered there is one other mod. I drilled out the valve spring retainer nut 1/16" larger for better air flow as it is very restrictive stock.
{Stock is 5/16 and drilled to 3/8, used a U size drill actually so .368}

The 150 grain with HP to bring down to 145 grain would suit the texan well. Last year I sent the Thompson bullet mold 358156 slugs to texan owner to try out he had a fair curve of 914, 924, 912 (off top of head- not exact numbers but remember teens and middle shot low 20's. Sized slugs I sent him were 154 grain. That was stock gun.
They didn't group well btw.
