Title: Donny FL Tanto & Rowan Engineering Adjustable Buttpad
Post by: Gear_Junkie on August 12, 2018, 06:35:40 PM
I made a few final changes to my Regal XL.  I didn't feel like the Airstream silencer was all that great, so I ordered a spare shroud assembly and a Donny FL Tanto.  Let me say that Donny FL deserves ALL of the praise that he receives for his well-machined parts.  This Tanto is precision made and extremely well finished.  I also made a significant difference to the sound moderation.  It's more of a hushed sound now, and MUCH more quiet than the airstream.  It also looks WAY cooler.  I never liked the look of the airstream.

Also, I felt like I was constantly adjusting the rifle into my shoulder at the last field target match.  I realized that some downward adjustment may help.  I installed one of Rowan Engineering's adjustable buttpads.  They did forget to tap 2 of the screw holes, so they sent me a tap so that I could properly tap the holes myself.  I had to buy a tap handle on my own, but now I know how to thread a hole, so I'll think of it as a bonus rather than an irritation.  I didn't really like the look of the red buttpad with my stock, so I opted for a Maccari Eliminator pad.  The kit was very easy to install.  Lowering the pad about 3/4" made shouldering the rifle much more comfortable.

In short, I'm extremely happy with both parts!

Zack, very nice custom/adjustment work! The Donny FL and Rowan adjustable buttpad look great on your beautiful Regal! I’ve been contemplating getting the adjustable buttpad from Rowan as I just luv their single shot loaders! Then I look at their match trigger and trigger guards...LOL! Really nice...enjoy...and good luck in your field target matches!

Thanks Randall!  I do love the Tanto - Donny's work is OUTSTANDING!  I also like the adjustability of the buttpad, but it doesn't seem to want to stay in one place.  I'm going to disassemble it and add some Loc-Tite to see if that solves the issues.  I also don't like how it adds to the LOP.  The rifle felt more balanced when shooting offhand without it... but it's more comfortable with the buttpad in the lower position  :P  Also, I tried one of Rowan's polished trigger guards on my Regal and it looked funny.  The front of the guard stuck out from the stock about 3/8", and it looked out of place.  However, this guard fit the HW97K perfectly.  I ended up selling it to someone with a 97.

I've wanted one of their single shot loaders for awhile, but haven't yet pulled the trigger.  I just placed an order earlier today for a TX200 trigger, and considered the single-shot loader, but passed on it again.  Maybe someday I'll grab one.

And I definitely need all of the luck I can get in FT!

Thanks!

Zack, you’re welcome! You should definitely order one of the single shot loaders...the loading mechanism pops out when you cock the bolt and makes loading a breeze. Mind if I ask how much the second shroud you ordered for he Regal? Was contemplating doing what you did to quiet her even more.

The shroud, adapter, barrel centering fork, and screws were a little over $100 if I recall correctly.  If you are brave enough to try and remove the airstream from your existing shroud, that's definitely the cheaper way to go.  You won't go back after you hear the quiet report from the Tanto!

Zack, thank you! Yeah, I’ve heard horror stories on removing the Airstream as it’s locktited on! I think peace of mind is worth the $100! Just remove shroud with Reflex and voila! LOL! Lazy mans way ;).
